The rose garden and potager are as close as I care to come to a formal garden. It has a structured, geometrical layout but is planted in a more unrestrictive style. The outer perimeter is planted with iris on the east side, lavender on south side (and eventually on the west side), and blueberries and raspberries on the north side. The borders are edged with antique bricks. The rest of the beds are a mix of roses and perennials. I am finding the benefits of using things like dianthus as ground covers to reduce the weeds and give a fuller feeling to the borders.
