White Bleeding Heart The Moon Garden, created in the spring of 2002, is composed of a circle of planting beds around the lawn. Structure in the beds is provided by evergreen azaleas, box, rhododendron, a variegated daphne, and a metal obelisk with sweet autumn clematis. A mock orange and several roses, including Jeanne d'Arc, Mme. Legras de St. Germain, Sir Thomas Lipton, Clothilde Souperb, Marie Pavie, Boule de Neige, and Iceburg, add to the volume. Perennials include bleeding hearts, astilbe, white salvia, lilies, dianthus, and hostas. Beside the entrance is Mme. Alfred Carriere planted with clematis 'Jackmanii' and confederate jasmine to climb a utility pole.

The abelia planted along the garage, the dogwoods and spirea along the northern woodland edge, and the magnolia are what inspired me to make this a predominently white garden. I am focusing on plants that will show well in low light (like white and pastel flowers), fragrance, and night blooming or scented flowers.

Not everything is white, however. There are a couple of red buds and I added a pink saucer magnolia in the center of the lawn. Growing along the edge of the woods are lunaria and violets.

There is a small bed of hosta, white bleeding hearts, and daffodils around the bird bath and bench.

One of the finest features of this garden so far, however, is the view of the neighbor's ponds down the hill.
