question

The girl looked at me with her head cocked to the

right. She chewed her gum and I waited for her to speak.

Prepared to stand my ground for as long as it took, I put my

hands in my pockets and readjusted my footing.

She blew a bubble with her gum and shifted her head to the left.

The wind was blowing, I could see trees behind her

bending with its force. Dust blew up around us. Behind the

girl I could see an approaching vehicle. The glint of the

sun on the windshield blinded me for a second. I looked down

and away from it.

I checked my watch, we had been standing there for

almost fifteen minutes with nothing having been said except

for my original question.

The vehicle was much closer now, it was a van, red, it

would be passing us soon. I looked down at myself, my

clothes had a dusty tint over the original colors. The wind

was unrelenting in showering us with dust.

The van passed us, speeding by. Its occupants watching

us out of their windows with mild interest. It went by,

raising even more dust into the air. So much that it was

hard to make out the girl standing in front of me for a

moment before I wiped my hands over my eyes.

She was still there though, standing in front of me.

She was wearing blue jeans and a white T-shirt and the dust

had already trained itself on her as well.

I looked right into her eyes, she glared back with a

stubbornness that pierced through me.

Why wouldn’t she just answer my damn question! I was

beginning to get angry with this girl. Finally, finally when

my patience was at an end and I was just about ready to give

up and leave, she looked up at me, snapped her gum and

answered my question.

“No," she said and walked away.
