Sewing
I know. Sometimes I don't knit. And then I get in trouble. But it's fun too.
Spindle Snake, Summer 2006:
A bag to transport my spindle. The separate section on the bottom (that looks like a face and give the spindle snake its name) keeps roving away from the spindle hooks.
I made up the pattern, and enjoyed the lesson in sewing more complex shapes.
Fleecy Dulaan blanket, Winter 2004/05:
A super quick no-sew blanket made with two layers of fleece I had left over from the Quillows on this page. I very roughly followed
this pattern. J helped. It's going to the Dulaan project.
Curtains, Summer 2004:
If you don't care that they're not even, neither do I. Actually, I don't care even if you do. Those black stripes are actually greenish blue. Besides those stripes, they were made with leftovers. Hooray for stashbusting!
Ugly Hat, Winter 2003:
Actually, I think of this as the Ugli (with umlaut) Hat, managing to be so unselfconsciously terrible looking that it has its own severe, Nordic Chic.
I lie to myself sometimes.
I have issues with hats that appear warm but don't do their job in numerous ways. So I made my own. Some of these features include:
*Nice, long, easy-to-grasp strings attached to the earflaps so I can tie (or retie) while wearing several layers of mittens.
*Nice and snug around the face to prevent the wind from getting in--since I wait for the bus across the street from a frozen lake in the winter, it gets windy and I need help.
*BIG earflaps that cover not only the ears, but part of my cheeks. This helps my scarf do its job more easily.
*Two layers of good-quality polartec on every surface. I may have gone overboard here, since you can see that the hat is poofy, but it's very, very warm.
Rubbermaid tub cover, Summer 2003:
Underneath this item's comfortable-yet-sophisticated exterior lies a humble Rubbermaid tub full of yarn and sew-y things. We use it as a coffeetable/ottoman. It's things like this that prevent the apartment from looking like a dorm room. I was impressed how cleanly it turned out, considering I made it up as I went along one long boring Sunday afternoon.
Quilt/pillows (aka Quillows), Winter 2002:
A holiday gift for a variety of inlaws. I used fleecy stuff that didn't like to behave. The "Roman Road" block was for my sister-in-law, who was going to Rome the next year. I don't remember the names of the other two blocks, they were more aesthetic choices.
Here is an excellent diagram for how these things fold up.
Anyone interested in how I made any of these things: You have a few options. A: Figure it out on your own. B: Contact me (tjane1216, then the "at" symbol, excite.com), although if it's copyrighted (as in, I didn't just make something up), I'll only be able to direct you to a reference. C: Never find out what I did, and wonder forever.
