The 5 whales shared this small pool for several years, before 2 things happened. The first was that Bubba, one of the whales from Stella's pod, was sold to Ocean Park Hong Kong. The second, and much happier, was that Kamogawa Sea World built a new, larger tank. And, while the pool was still VERY small for the amount of whales kept there, with all the whales being so young, and considering the past facility, it was a huge improvement.
In 1997, Maggie, the dominant female at Kamogawa, died. Stella and Maggie were very close, and after Maggie's death, Stella became unpredictable, aggressive, and withdrawn. She refused to perform or do water work. This went on for about a year, until Stella's first daughter Lovey was born. After Lovey's birth, Stella slowly seemed to recover from Maggie's death, and began performing again. In 2001, Stella gave birth for the second time, again to a daughter. That calf was named Lara, and Stella has continued to care for both of her calves.
Now 19 years old, Stella is the mother of two, and is very close to her tank-mates. She remains a small whale, at only 16.4 feet long and a little over 4,400 pounds.
