Takara

Takara is a 10 year old female Icelantic captive-born whale. She was born at Sea World of California on July 9, 1991. Her mother, Kasatka, is a 25 year old Icelantic female, captured in 1978. Her father, Kotar, was a 18 year old Icelantic male, captured in 1978. He died in 1995. She has 3 half-brothers, Keet, born in 1993 to Kalina and Kotar; Keto, born in 1995 to Kalina and Kotar; and an unnamed male calf, born in 2001 to Kasatka and Tillikum. She also has 4-half siblings who have passed away. A male stillborn by Samoa and Kotar in 1991, a male who died unborn when his mother Kenau died in 1991, another stillborn in 1990 to Kahana and Kotar, and a female who died after 38 days to Haida and Kotar.

Takara remained dependent on her mother for a lot longer than calves born at Sea World typically do. She nursed until she was over two years old, and staff was unable to seperate them. Takara has always been spoiled, as being the daughter of the domiant female, the other Orcas wouldn't dare pick on her.

At 10 years old, Takara is currently a very healthy and active whale. She's still every bit as spoiled as she was when she was younger. She loves to interact with Sea World guests, and spends a lot of time at the viewing windows. At 16.3 feet and 4,300 pounds she still has some growing to do, and is not noted for her mauturity. She's still very much a teenager. However, she is currently (9/01) 10 months pregnant, and set to deliever her calf in March or April of 2002. Only time will tell how she reacts to being a mother.
