Prologue

She sat in her room, looking out the window at the trees in the garden. Everything was so perfect in her little world. Well, not really, but she liked to pretend it was. She continued looking at the flowers and the trees. They looked so peaceful out there, free almost. But to her everything was a prison. The expansive palace she lived in was beautiful, true, but to her it was a guilded prison. She had no freedom, and none believed her. They always said, 'You are free,' or, 'This is no prison, it is a palace for the one we love,' and other meaningless stupid things.

She was never materialistic, but she had everything a girl could wish for. She had friends, family, and men following her in drones for her attention. But she was a caged bird. Her wings were broken so she could not fly free. She was tied to her duty to the people of her kingdom and her world. She was their dove of peace, destined to sit in her guilded cage, never to fly. To be shown to all as a side show in the hopes of keeping peace. But inside she had no peace. She whispered to herself, "This is the way it is." And so she sat in her room, watched intently by the man she wanted more than life itself, and cried.

He rose and embraced her in strong arms as she cried. And when she questioned, "Why can you not be with me?" His only response was to look her in the eye and tell her.

"This is the way it is." He would smile at her and hold her close, savoring every second she was with him. But he would help his caged bird. Slowly, ever so slowly, he tried to mend her broken wings. And slowly, ever so slowly, she would make him open up. And together they faced the world. Why you ask? Because, friends, that is the way it is.
