Prologue
Computers don’t lie. Heero Yuy learned that long ago.
People lie, but computer’s don’t.
Heero watched the information
scrolling across the screen of his laptop with an intensity most people
couldn’t keep up for more than thirty minutes.
He’d been at it for more
than twenty-four hours.
The information was there,
at least most of it was. He’d dug it
out and put it together. He didn’t have
all the pieces. Yet. But he had enough to extrapolate the final
picture.
It wasn’t pretty.
Heero didn’t have an
office, not really. He worked better
knowing that only a handful of people knew where he was at any one time. The last day he’d spent holed up in the
office shared by Wufei Chang and Sally Po.
Both of them knew he was there, as did Lady Une, but when he was working
on something like he was now they kept everyone away from him and let him do
what he was good at.
Finding the truth.
Since he’d come to work for
the Preventers several months ago, shortly after the Mariemaia incident, Heero
finally felt truly at peace with himself.
He wasn’t sure it was the
right place for him at first. The
Preventers were a military organization after all. But within a few weeks he realized it was a military organization
that really did prevent war. It did not
participate in it. Preventing was the
only thing his conscience would allow him to do.
He would never again be
used as a tool of war.
Heero tapped lightly on his
keyboard, printing off a hard copy of the information on the computer screen,
then he activated the VidCom unit on the desk next to him. A couple of seconds later a too cheerful
face greeted him.
“Hello, Hilde’s house of
hair. We guarantee everyone leaves
happy!”
“Duo!” A female voice yelled from the
background. “Stop answering that way.”
“Hey, no hitting!” Grinning, Duo ducked as Hilde attacked him,
but his face came back into view a moment later. He winked when he saw who was calling him.
“Heero, what’s up?”
Heero’s face remained
impassive. “Duo, I need a favor.”
“Sure buddy, when I have
ever turned you down?” Duo giggled as
Hilde continued to poke at him. “What
is it?”
“I’ve uncovered some
disturbing information.” Heero’s voice
became even more remote than usual.
“Oh yeah?” Duo’s grin slipped and disappeared.
“Yeah. I think it’s finally time I killed Relena
Darlian.”
