Chapter 11

The guards milling around the lobby near the metal detectors were bored. One man leaned against the wall, reading the newspaper; another sat at a desk, absently drinking some coffee.

Arys and Heero stepped through the doorway into the lobby. Both wore black clothing, sunglasses, and expressionless faces. The guards standing nearest the metal detector eyed them warily. Arys put the duffel bag she was holding onto the conveyor belt and stepped back, glancing at Heero.

Heero took his cue and walked through the metal detector. It beeped.

One guard walked up to him and said in a bored tone, "Please remove all metal..." His eyes widened.

Heero pulled open his trenchcoat, revealing the guns hidden underneath the front flaps. His eyes lit with a dangerous fire.

"What...!" The guard began.

Heero nailed him in the chest with his palm, sending the guard flying backwards. The other guards came alive, but not fast enough to save their lives. Heero pulled two submaching guns from his personal armory and drilled the guards converging on him. One guard made it to the red alert switch on the wall. He pulled it.

Arys stepped through the metal detector, cradling a pistol. With cold accuracy, she aimed it at him.

"Bad move, buddy." She pulled the trigger.

The guard slumped to the ground, and Arys went to the end of the conveyor belt to pick up her bag. She walked up beside Heero, who waited for her in between the second row of pillars. Then, they heard running steps coming from the other end of the lobby. More guards poured from the stairwells on either side of the elevator. They took up positions behind the pillars, all their guns aimed at the couple standing in the middle of the room.

"Freeze!" One guard shouted.

Heero and Arys glanced at each other. Arys dropped the bag in the middle of the lobby, and the two split, heading for the cover of the marble pillars. Arys cartwheeled across the empty space between two pillars to dodge the bullets flying toward her. She backed up against a pillar and took a deep breath, readying herself to run.

Heero hid behind a pillar, threw down his guns, and pulled out two pistols. He glanced around once, jumped out from behind the pillar and raced down the corridor, taking down guards with his pistols.

Arys noticed the guard standing a few yards in front of her and the gun he held in his hand. With a quick leap, she catapulted herself onto the wall and ran sideways across it, bullets whistling by her. The guard continued to shoot at her until she slipped off the wall and landed behind him. With a kick from her left foot, his rifle went twirling over his head to land in her hands. Arys deftly pulled the trigger and shot the guard in the back. He slowly slumped to his knees and Arys continued her run down the passageway.

Heero did a handstand to pick up a fallen guard's rifle and took out three more guards while he was upside-down. He landed behind a pillar again, tossed the gun away from him, and pulled two more backups from the inside flaps of his coat. Realizing that he was close to the end of the lobby, he shot the guards standing near the elevator and raced out into the middle of the lobby. He shot two more guards, threw his guns down, and then launched himself into the air to perform a triple-kick that knocked out the remaining guard. He landed on his feet and glanced back at where his duffel bag lay in the middle of the floor. He calmly sprinted toward it, slid to a stop beside the bag, and picked it up. Arys joined him and the couple walked to the end of the lobby. Heero pushed the up button and the doors slid open immediately. They stepped into the elevator and the doors closed behind them.

Arys took the duffel bag from Heero and set it on the floor. Heero studied the ceiling, looking for the emergency exit. She unzipped the bag and pulled down the sides to expose the bomb inside. Heero found the exit and pulled it open. Arys tapped a button on the bomb's control panel and the timer flickered to life. With a deft twist of her hand, Arys adjusted the dial to blow the bomb in two minutes. Heero tossed his gun up through the hole in the ceiling and leaped up after it, landing with a thunk that Arys could hear. Arys grabbed the hand he lowered to her and jumped up after him. Heero reached down to close the exit while Arys eyed the elevator shaft above them.

Heero stood to his feet, picking up his gun as he did so. He gripped the elevator cable and tucked an arm around Arys' waist. She moved closer and gave him a quick kiss before grabbing the cable and placing an arm around him. Heero tightened his arm around her and pointed his gun at the point where the cable was connected to the elevator.

"Yours forever," he whispered to Arys before pulling the trigger.

The cable snapped, sending them flying up the shaft as the bomb went off beneath them in a cloud of boiling flame and smoke. The boiling flame flowed into the lobby, and the bomb's explosion rocked the very foundations of the building.

Remir felt the building shake as a dull boom sounded in his ears. He grabbed the edge of his desk to keep himself from swaying from the unnatural earthquake.

"Heero and Arys Yuy..." He muttered. "They're here." He glanced at the intercom on his desk. "And they've found my bomb..."

He sat behind his desk and crossed his arms over his chest. He watched the monitor. A billow of smoke suddenly filled the screen, blocking his view of the hallway to his office door. Remir opened the top drawer of his desk and picked up a remote. The door to his office blew open and two shadowy forms coalesced from the smoke clouds into two black-clad Preventer agents. Heero and Arys walked forward. Arys took off her sunglasses and Remir could see the flash of anger in her gray eyes. She raised her gun and aimed it at Remir's chest. Remir gave her a condescending look.

"My dear Arys, can you really kill me?" His grip on the remote tightened.

"You've killed me enough times, Remir." Arys' expression did not soften. She shrugged. "Why not?"

Without even a flinch of regret, Arys pulled the trigger. Heero stood behind her, surprised at his wife's action. He was even more surprised when Arys continued to shoot at Remir, her eyes dark. Finally, the gun clicked onto an empty chamber. Heero stepped forward and gently pulled the gun from her hand.

"He's dead, Arys."

"I know." Arys walked behind the desk and picked up the remote from Remir's limp hand. She had killed him on the first shot and he had not had time to push the blinking button on its surface.

"You didn't interrogate him." Heero's voice was matter-of-fact.

"He had another bomb planted. This remote was set to activate it." She studied it thoughtfully. "If I had waited, he would have blown up the entire colony."

Heero nodded and went to the desk. He rifled through the papers sitting on the desktop, while Arys bent down to frisk Remir. She stood up, holding a slip of paper. She handed the slip to Heero and bent down again. Remir's eyes were still open, staring blankly through her at the ceiling.

"So, Remir, what do you see?" She asked as she swept a hand across his eyelids.
