Snapshots:
Sunlight on Water
By Starling
Arys and Heero walked along the riverbank, hand in hand, listening to the birdsong and rippling of the water. Arys had had to fight hard for this three day vacation, but already, Arys knew it would be worth it. She glanced at her husband to see that he looked more relaxed than he had in months. She felt the gentle pressure of his hand squeezing hers and she knew that he had seen her studying him.
Arys answered his unspoken question. “I was thinking about how relaxed you are.”
Heero stopped walking and tugged Arys toward the water. He sat down on the grass and pulled Arys down next to him. Arys leaned against his shoulder, content to have him hold her like this. His arm went around her and his fingers tangled in her long hair. She scooted closer, staring at the water. The surface of the river was covered with glittering sparkles of sunlight. She absently thought how beautiful and peaceful it looked. She and Heero rarely experienced moments of peace like this. Their lives were filled with missions to stop crazed madmen, radical terrorist groups, or corrupt politicians.
“The sunlight dances on the water. I never noticed that before.” Heero’s cheek settled against her hair. Arys heard him sigh and knew that he was as content as she was. He kissed her hair, arm tightening around her. “I wish we could stay like this.”
Arys understood what he meant. He wished for a peaceful life with her and the children they hoped to have, but she knew that deep inside, they both thrived on the danger they experienced daily.
“If we stayed like this, Heero, we would begin to take the sunlight for granted. You have to go through a storm in order to appreciate the sunlight.”
Heero’s lips traveled down to hers. “Hmm… I never knew you were such a philosopher, Arys.” He kissed her, and Arys could not resist pulling him closer, her hands reaching up to clench around his shirt. His free arm circled around her, and Arys found herself caught in his possessive embrace. Arys leaned back, breaking the kiss. Heero gave her a hurt look, one she had seen before, back when they had first fallen in love. Except now, there was no one around except the two of them. That meant no Duo for Arys to yell at.
“I took lessons from Nari and Mei,” she said.
Heero nodded, smiling mischievously as he leaned forward. “Really?”
Arys could not help smiling in return as she studied the face she loved. His face was only a few inches away.
“I love you,” she whispered just before her husband kissed her again. For the rest of the afternoon, they were lost in each other, and the sunlight continued to dance on the water.
