The Hourglass Home- Poetry

The Guardian watches and waits as time falls
silently in the hourglass, each sand a second,
a memory, a life. He knows nothing but the
signal, and is always careful, as shattering
glass is sure means of death. And above
the vast chamber a star explodes. He
is startled, unsuspecting, stumbles.
A reflex, a movement, a gasp.
Time slows, the glass
Falls. A sound
Echoes
Through the
Chamber. Is it the
Glass cracking? Will it
Hold? Stay your breath. Is
That a prayer? Watch and wait.
Time is stretched before it is broken
The sand is free, the silence is shattered.
An icy wind blows through the hall. A cry
Is muffled. The Guardian reaches quickly but
His hands, clumsy. The glass, broken. He has
Failed. He withers and is no more. Unwatched
The glasses go and the sand flows still until it is
