Twisted Reality Home- Poetry

A woman walks by with a dog
And I see her
Then I see her.
It’s funny, the way my mind works

First impression
Average bordering on pretty
Shapely and tan
Dark hair, dark eyes
Black shirt, red shirt
Red shirt, red blood

Second impression
Prey, not predator
Easy target?
Perhaps
Dark eyes cut left
Dark eyes cut right
Cut to cutting to knives

Too wary
Rejected

“Check.”
I turn to the clerk
A gangly boy

Smile disarmingly
Slide the check across the counter
Pull out my wallet
Wife and kids smile up from a picture

“Have a good day.”
I nod
“You too.”

A grocery list tucked in a pocket
Pick the stuff up
Home by 6
Dinner, dishes
Bills, bed
Work tomorrow

A plump woman smiles as I
Pass her in the doorway
I smile back

The dual impressions start again.
