Wise Eyes, Sunny Smiles Home- Poetry

A child laughs at the antics of the
Cat and mouse on television
And for a moment she is young
Free
But illusion is shattered like a vase on
The cartoon

She smiles from an old face
Studies the world through wise eyes
Existing in a dual reality of
Beginnings and ends

She’ll endure always with a sun filled smile
Painting prettily pink fingernails
Celebrating her 10th birthday
Delighting in the simple play of make-believe
Even while her body betrays and
Sends her spiraling into youthful old age

And even after the workings of her body
Fail
She’ll continue to live
And laugh
And smile
Through those who have been touched
By her strong spirit and courage
