SNIPER WEAPONS

These are the weapons of the military's finest snipers. They are precision rifles manufactured solely for precise, distant shots.

The Barrett Model 82 (M-82A1)

This is the Barrett .50 cal long-range rifle. It is in use in the U.S. armed forces as well as several others and is mainly used on larger, heavily armored targets or for very distant targets. It is the current world record holder for distance and accuracy by a sniper rifle. This monster has a 5-round, Browning .50 clip and can be broken down to fit in a drag bag. The M-82 can easily take out large targets at over 1,000 yards and can be loaded with armor piercing bullets to completely disable a large tank. However, the gun, a mounted bipod, a scope, and the magazine weighs in at 32.2 pounds. The picture below shows the giant .50 cal next to an M-60 "chain gun".

The TOW Rocket Launcher

This is quite possibly the worlds most powerful sniper rifle. It is the TOW (Tube-launched, Optically-aimed, Wire-guided) rocket. This rocket is mounted on helicopters as well, but it has outstanding accuracy when launched from the ground. It can completely wipe out a fully armored tank from over a mile away. It may be a beast to transport, but it sure will get any job done.

The Heckler and Koch PSG-1

You may recognize this gun as the rifle used by "Miller" (Billy Zane) in the movie "Sniper." It is called the HK PSG-1. It is a gas-operated, 5- or 20-round, magazine-fed, semiautomatic weapon and is 47.5" long with a 25.6" barrel. It is topped by a 6-power x 42-mm telescopic sight with six settings for range from 100 to 600 meters. The 7.62-mm x 51 (.308 WIN) PSG-1 weighs 20.7 pounds with tripod and when fully loaded. Its muzzle velocity is 2,558 to 2,624 fps. Its is used by many military forces and is quite a fine firearm.
