To Battle or Not to Battle, that is the Question.

Gundam: Battle Assault
PSX

As a disclaimer, I'm not a huge Gundam fan, I mean I like the program and the toys and well this game was one that I thought, what the hell, I'll give it a try and see what it is like. I must admit to being blown away by the graphic detail and well the game itself is extremely addictive, which is the sign of a great game.

The great thing about this game is the number of choices of characters that you can play. GBA actually goes across the range of Gundam titles, so you will find characters from Mobile Suit Gundam to Gundam Wing Endless Waltz that you can battle against. The game really does have keep in line with the series and the characters can actually use the moves in the game that the show has them do.

From a graphics standpoint, the game is extremely intense. Battle damage shows up the more beat the other character. The characters movements (extending an arm, hovering in air) all fit into the game realm. The backgrounds change with every match and well when you discover how to use the special attacks, there is nothing like seeing tons of bazooka shells falling from the sky on your opponent.

From a plot standpoint, yes there is a plot in this game. Unlike other beat'em up games, this one follows Heero Yuy as he tries to bring peace back to Earth. Each level increases in difficulty as the game starts to adapt to your moves as Heero and well there are some interesting characters that pop up against you when you are in story mode. The first time I beat the game it took all afternoon on an easy mode, simply because of one character that was about ten times larger than Wing Gundam. The ending of the game, at least in story mode, is a little different than you would expect but for diehard fans you will find that this is really a shock but in a good way.

In two-player mode, you can really have some fun. Test out all the game moves, the instruction manual is great in that it breaks down every move for you so it is possible to actually learn how to use a shield drop or unless the special sword moves for Wing and Wing Zero.

Overall, this game is a great addition to the Gundam world. Whether you are a newbie, (if so join me in the Newbie boot camp) or a veteran Gundam addict (the 12 step program can help) you will enjoy this game. The graphics kick ass, the game play is challenging and well there is just something enjoyable about being able to beat the hell out of a suit on the screen. This game is a must have if you have any interest in Gundam, you will not regret it.
