BACKGROUND

Not initially taking the threat of "mobile suits" seriously, the Earth Federation was a latecomer during the One Year War when it came to development and production of its own mobile suits to counter the Principality of Zeon. Based on combat data from the RX-78-2 Gundam's "learning computer" system and experimental GM-type units such as the RGM-79[E], the Federation's first true mass-production unit was simply named the RGM-79 GM. Though the first GM units weren't available until UC November 0079, the Federation's material and manufacturing superiority allowed it to quickly catch up, fielding enough units in time to retake contested areas on Earth and to participate in the Federation's Operation Star One offensive on Zeon's space front.

The production-model GM was basically a simplified version of the original Gundam, eliminating some of the more complex and expensive features - such as the Core Block System and using normal titanium alloy armor instead of lunar titanium - to make its production faster and more economical. The GM only carried one beam saber instead of two, and had optional hand armaments of either a 100 mm machinegun or a short-range - but highly effective - beam spray gun. Though not produced in particularly large numbers during the war, the performance of the new mobile suits were easily a match for the Zeon's older Zaku and Dom class mobile suits, especially in the hands of the highly trained pilots entrusted with the first rollout. At least 150 GMs were fielded by the end of the One Year War, of which just over half were committed to the EFSF for Operation Star One.

After the One Year War ended at the beginning of UC 0080, the Earth Federal Forces began rebuilding its military strength, and one major step was the improvement of its mass-production RGM-79 GM mobile suit on a widespread scale. The improved mass-production model was the RGM-79C GM Kai, and though it was similar to the original GM in its armament and abilities, it did feature greatly improved thruster acceleration and maneuverability. The "C-type" GM would remain the standard mass-production frontline unit for the Earth Federal Forces until the introduction of the RGM-79R GM II several years later.

RPG STATS

Vehicle Type: RGM-79C GM

Class: General purpose mobile suit
Manufacturer: Earth Federal Forces
Crew: pilot only, in standard cockpit in torso

MDC BY LOCATION:

(1) Head 40
    Arms (2) 70 each
    Legs (2) 130 each
(2) Main vernier pack 100
    Shield 200
    Beam gun (1 or 2) 60 each
    Hyper bazooka 120
(3) Cockpit hatch 20
(4) Main Body 220
NOTES:
  1. Destroying the head of the mobile suit will knock out the mobile suit's major sensor systems, including all of the optics systems (infrared, nightvision, thermal) and radar systems. The pilot will still have limited field of vision with the mobile suit's four backup cameras.
  2. Destroying one thruster will reduce the flight speed of the mobile suit in space by 15%. Destroying all four thrusters will force the mobile suit to rely on leg verniers and AMBAC systems for mobility. (- 5 to dodge) Destroying the main vernier pack completely will cause an additional 2D6x10 M.D. to the main body.
  3. Depleting the MDC of the cockpit will kill the pilot instantly and render the mobile suit useless.
  4. Depleting the MDC of the Main Body will destroy the mobile suit, probably killing the pilot as well.

WEAPON SYSTEMS:

  1. BEAM SPRAY GUN (1): This small beam weapon is based on the standard beam rifle used by the RX-78 Gundam model. Though much smaller in size and roughly half as powerful, the beam spray gun is an extremely effective anti-mobile suit weapon at longer ranges than most projectile weapons.
  2. 360mm HYPER BAZOOKA (1): Another weapon handed down from the original Gundam project, this rocket firing weapon is mainly used in heavy assaults against hardened targets such as gun emplacements, warships or armored vehicles. The explosive damage and long firing range of the bazooka makes it ideal for anti-warship missions, but it's small ammo capacity makes it somewhat of a burden in combat against other mobile suits.

  3. 90mm MACHINEGUN: This tried and trusted design served the federation's needs very well during the One Year War, with superior accuracy and equal damage per round as the larger 120mm Zaku machine guns. The smaller size of the weapon not only helps to improve accuracy but also gives pilots and edge in close combat, where Zaku pilots would be forced to discard their cumbersome rifles in order to engage other mobile suits hand to hand.

  4. 55mm HEAD VULCAN (2): For close combat, the GM is equipped with a pair of 55mm head vulcans mounted just above the sensor plate. These machineguns aren't all that powerful on their own, but their rapid firing rate supplements superb accuracy and form the head vulcans into valuable defensive tools. They can be used to shoot down missiles, small fighters, or even damage specific parts of enemy mobile suits with better accuracy than any other handheld weapons.

  5. BEAM SABER (1): Regardless of armor or weapons loadouts, most mobile suits are both most vulnerable and most deadly in close quarters. Therefore, the GM is equipped with a single plasma/energy beam saber designed specifically for close combat against enemy mobile suits or warships. The beam saber can penetrate any armor material known to man, but can usually be partially deflected by other melee weapons, including Zeon heat blades and some shields.

  6. CLOSE COMBAT: If necessary, the RGM-79 can engage in melee combat rather than use a weapon. The mobile suit is extremely agile and can execute most typical hand to hand combat moves, such as punches, jump kicks, leap attacks, rolling with impacts, etc.

    1. DAMAGE (BEAM SABER):

    2. One handed Slash: 3D6x10 M.D.

    3. Two handed Slash: 3D8x10 M.D.

    4. Boosted Slash: 4D8x10 M.D.

    5. Stab/thrust: 1D8x10 M.D. (plus penetration and damage to all in line systems)

    6. DAMAGE (HAND TO HAND):

    7. Restrained Punch: 3D6 M.D.

    8. Full Strength Punch: 1D6x10 M.D.

    9. "Booster" Punch: 1D8x10 M.D. (counts as two attacks)

    1. Tear or Pry with Hands: 4D6 M.D.

    2. Kick: 5D6 M.D.

    3. Leap Kick: 5D8 M.D.

    4. Body Flip/Throw: 2D8 M.D.

    5. Body Block/Tackle: 4D8 M.D.

    6. Stomp: 3D6 M.D. (only effective against small objects)
