Noelani O’Brien sat at a large, ornately carved desk. In front of her lay a barrage of maps and blue prints for assorted countries and colonies. Her knee length black hair was secured in an untidy bun at the base of her skull. She brushed her bangs out of her deep gray colored eyes and looked towards the door to the massive office.

Zechs Merquise walked slowly into the office of his employer and lover. She was ever the diligent one, and tonight was much like the last. He was greeted with maps and blueprints, codes and mainframe passwords, all of which were unfriendly and cold towards his affections. "Always working Noelani? Come to bed. You’ll be sick if you don’t have your rest." Zechs pleaded, his hand outstretched.

"The matter of setting this world on the path of righteousness is no small task, Zechs. It takes diligence, planning, and exquisite timing." Her slight Irish accent played on her agitation.

"Can it not wait until morning?" Noelani glared at him.

"No." she sternly spat in response. Her expression immediately softened as she stood. She walked to the large window behind her desk. It was open to allow the warm breeze coming off of Lake Victoria to calm her during her work. The stars twinkled brightly in the sky, reminding her of the vastness she was up against. She wrapped her arms around her slim body, attempting to hide her shaking from Zechs. Noelani’s efforts were futile, and he held her in his warm embrace within seconds.

"Don’t you remember when this was a great academy? The days when you would train to fight for peace?" Her eyes were intent on the fallen ruble of what used to be the largest training facility in the known universe.

Zechs felt a pull on his heart at her words. "Yes. But that was a long time ago Noelani."

"To long Zechs. Far to long. This building was put here to remind us of what war can do to a society. It was put here to flaunt the ‘peace’ that the Gundam pilots won." Noelani’s voice had become stern once more. "That ‘peace’ has been forgotten Zechs. The world has forgotten what they worked so hard to achieve. It’s people live under the false assurance that this peace will never again be broken. They don’t know the suffering that war can bring. And therefore they can never know true peace. They’ve broken a cardinal rule: always be aware of the past, because it can come back to bite you in the ass faster than you can blink. What this world needs, is a war. A war to teach them the value of human life. And I will be the one to teach them that, if I have to start this war myself."

"And you will succeed. Tomorrow." Zechs said, in a manner that forbid all argument to the contrary. Noelani sighed against his embrace and decided not to push the issue. The hour was late and she had grown weary of the planning. She thought as Zechs took her hand and began leading her towards the door.

The halls of the elaborate manor were full of rich colors and vibrant wall hangings. The two lovers walked hand in hand to their bedroom in the left wing of the estate. The room was decorated in hues of red and accented by richly carved furniture pieces. Noelani changed into her nightgown and crawled into the large bed, falling asleep as soon as her head hit the pillow.

She watched her younger sister from afar as she playfully chased after the small puppy she had received for her birthday. Noelani couldn’t help but smile at her sister’s actions. The young girl’s spirit was beyond measure. She returned to the book she was reading for a moment, trusting that her younger sister would stay within seeing distance. After a paragraph or two, Noelani raised her head for the pages and discovered the girl talking to a young boy. Getting to her feet, she walked into hearing distance, preparing to talk her sister out of any trouble she might have wandered into. Noelani stopped once she was in range to listen and discovered that she and nothing to worry about. Another smile passed over her features.

Within moments, the young girl came skipping back, her new puppy on her heels.

"What was that all about?" Noelani inquired, interested.

"Oh, Mary saw him and ran over before I could stop her. I just asked him if he was lost or somethin’. I was gonna come right back, honest." Her eyes pleaded with Noelani not to punish her for talking to strangers.

"It’s alright. Come on, let’s go back to the base. Mom and Dad will be worried if we’re out to long." "Kay!" the girl squealed happily.

The pair walked in silence to the nearby base and back to the barracks that their family called home. There, Noelani’s mother was preparing dinner, and her father was reading the evening news paper in his armchair as he always did. It was your typical family, sure they had their arguments occasionally, but they were well-rounded. The young girl ran excitedly to her father, jumping into his lap and beginning to relay the afternoon’s events to the older man.

Again Noelani smiled and walked to the kitchen to help her mother prepare the evening meal. The pair chatted like friends and soon the food was prepared and placed on the table, waiting for consumption. The family sat down to dinner, eating and discussing the day’s events. Noelani had a fleeting thought of an old show called ‘Leave it to Beaver’. She had only seen one episode from the library archives, but the scene before her bore a striking resemblance to it. She smirked silently to her self and returned to the conversation.

Later on in the evening, when her sister had gone to bed and her parents sat in the living room watching a late night talk show, Noelani sat in her room, catching up on her reading. Deciding that she just wasn’t in the mood to be cooped up indoors any more, she threw on some jeans and snuck out her small bedroom window. The stars shinning brightly in the sky were momentarily interrupted by a mobile suit, not uncommon on an Oz base. Noelani strolled to the park and sat underneath the very tree she had been under that afternoon.

Out of the corner of her eye, she spotted the young boy that her sister had run into earlier that day. She rose again to approach him, curious as to what his name was. He was, after all, kind of cute. Another mobile doll flew overhead, of which she didn’t take much notice. The boy glanced at it and pulled a small device from, God knows where, and pushed the small red button on the top.

Noelani stopped in her tracks. To her utter horror, the doll flying over the base burst into flames and came hurtling down towards it. The scene unfolded before her as if in slow motion. The flaming mobile suit crashed into the center of the compound, immediately setting of a series of explosions that leveled the base within a matter of minutes. The agony of the destruction seemed to take a millennium to Noelani’s senses. Visions of her parents and sister flashed before her eyes. Her knees buckled underneath, bringing her to the ground with a soft thud. She took in a shaking breath that she realized she had not took in the prolonged moment. Tears fell silently from her eyes as she watched her home go up with the smoke and ashes spewing forth from the wreckage.

With a deep breath, Noelani screamed.

Noelani shot bolt upright in her bed gasping for air. {That damn dream again} she thought angrily. She had broken into a cold sweat as she tossed the comforter from her legs and moved swiftly to the bathroom. Looking into the mirror, Noelani attempted to fix the disheveled mass that was her hair. An image of the burning wreckage passed before her mind.

The sound of retching woke Zechs from his deep sleep. He was immediately on his way to the restroom, the origin of the sound. There he found his lover with her head in the toilet. Sweeping her hair out of the way, he waited patiently for the cease of her stomach. When she rose he handed her a moist washcloth and flushed. They sat in silence for a brief moment.

"The dream again?" Noelani could only nod. He took her in his arms, comforting her as tears began to fall from her eyes. He let her cry against his shoulder until she could regain control. It pulled on his heart strings to see her in such pain. Her and her family had been close. A value, like true peace, that had been seemingly forgotten. It was a long time before he heard her breathing even out, and when it did, he cradled her light frame in his arms, and carried her back to bed.

Zechs pulled the sheets to her shoulders, kissing her lips lightly as he did. "Sweet dreams love." He whispered to her, climbing into the other side. {Or perhaps, don’t dream at all.}
