Chapter 9
At 1:54 am, the exhausted pair slumped over their 7 page report of the New Military Base, including all the visuals, diagrams and audio they could come up with. Styrofoam coffee cups littered the desk and floor and empty coffee pots graced the desktop around the computer. Sophia ran both hands through her hair and stared at Duo.
His eyes were glassy and half closed in an effort to stay awake. Loose tendrils of hair stuck out of his braid at odd angles and his bangs were plastered to his forehead and sticking straight up in the air, caused by his 5 minute catnap at around midnight where he did a face-plant onto the desk. Resisting all the urges to laugh, because she knew she couldn’t look much better than he did, she put all the papers in a neat stack next to the computer. After shutting down her computer and turning off the light next to her, Sophia softly rubbed Duo’s back and murmured at him to get up.
Making an inhuman noise in the back of his throat, Duo stood and shook his head to clear it. He glanced at the clock next to him and smiled slowly.
"Wow. And with hours to spare. We are so good."
Sophia laughed quietly and turned to the door. "C’mon. Let’s go get some sleep. We’ll have a good 5 hours, depending on how long it takes for me to wake up and you to wash all that hair."
Locking the office door behind them, the pair started walking to the dorm area of Preventer Headquarters. Weaving their way across the hallway, Duo and Sophia smiled at each other every other second, giddy in the fact that they had finished their report. Reaching the door of Sophia’s apartment she shared with Sally Po, she turned to Duo and smiled at him slowly.
"Goodnight Duo."
She patted his shoulder softly and turned to the door. Suddenly feeling a pressure on her own shoulder, she turned to look at Duo, and was met with a serious face. Sophia stared into his eyes as his face drew closer to her own. Each closing their eyes, their lips met in a tentative kiss.
Sophia pushed closer into him, sliding her hand around to the back of his neck. /Who knew a man’s lips could be so soft./
Opening his eyes, Duo stared down at his friend. Pulling away and hating to break the contact, he grinned at her.
"Goodnight."
Putting his hands in the pockets of his pants, Duo strolled quickly down the hall to the boys’ dorms. Fishing a key out of her jacket, Sophia opened the door to her apartment. In the dim light from the moon in the window, Sophia could make out two figures lumped under the covers of Sally’s bed. Sally’s light hair was covered by a spread of shoulder length black hair. Rolling her eyes, Sophia dropped her jacket on a nearby chair and kicked off her shoes.
"Geez, you two, get a room," Sophia mumbled, sliding under the covers of her own bed. "Oh, wait. You already have one. Nevermind."
Falling back onto her pillow, Sophia shot one more look at the two before turning her head to the wall. Smiling, she lifted her hands to her lips as she fell into a welcoming sleep. ***************************************************************************
Sophia could feel something warm nuzzling into her neck. Opening an eye, she made out a pile of hair matting itself into her collarbone. As she tried to sit up, Sophia realized that the hair was attached to a body, which was, at the moment, sprawled across her own.
"Ack. What the hell?"
Sophia cleared her throat and tried once again to talk to the person so comfortably nestled into her own body.
"Who are you? Why are you on me? Was I conscious when this happened? What happened?"
The head lifted and Sophia found herself staring into deep violet eyes.
"Soph, shut it, will ya? You’re more comfortable than my bed, that’s all."
Sophia let out a pent-up breath and patted Duo awkwardly on his head. "Duo, I don’t know if that’s a compliment or not, but I’ll let it slide this time."
Duo laughed, the sound vibrating off her neck. "Compliment. Trust me."
Out of nowhere, Sally jumped in front of the bed and a flash went off.
"HA! I told the others this would eventually happen between you two. They never believed me, but now I have photographic evidence!" Sally shouted, waving a Polaroid in the air to develop.
Sophia tried to move, but Duo still pinned her to the mattress. "Sal, you’re dead. Okay? Run. Run really fast, or I might have to get up and kill you."
Wufei came out from behind a dresser, straightening his tie and chuckling at the same time. "You couldn’t get up even if you wanted to. That lethargic being on top of you is moving nowhere real fast."
Sophia smiled back at Wufei. "True, but he’ll be getting up soon unless he wants his ass whooped by Une. We have a team meeting in," Sophia said, pausing to stare at a clock, "17 minutes and 48 seconds."
Wufei arched an eyebrow at her as he straightened his shirt and wound an arm around Sally’s waist. "Your ability with telling time simply amazes me, Sophia. Just don’t be late."
As Sophia and Duo listened to the two walk down the hall, they were able to hear Sally’s voice distinctly say ‘photocopy machine.’ Sophia groaned, closing her eyes and shaking her head in disbelief.
"Great. Now that wonderful little snapshot of us will be on display for all our co-workers to see," she mumbled.
Duo smiled into her neck. "Yeah," he said. "But now we all have a lunch time conversation topic."
Sophia snorted in a very un-ladylike manner. "C’mon! Get up!"
She slapped him on his butt to emphasize her point. Unfortunately, her action did not have the desired effect. His hips arched into hers and a shocked expression overtook his face. Duo’s hands slipped from her arms and came to rest above her shoulders, supporting all his weight and pushing his body closer to hers.
Staring into his eyes, Sophia wrapped her legs around his calves and slid her hands up his chest. Both of them moved their heads closer and their lips met hungrily, emitting none of the tenderness felt before and conveying all the emotions they felt now. Duo pressed his lips harder against Sophia’s, his arms shaking with suppressed desire. Sophia scraped her teeth along his bottom lip, sliding her hand to press his head closer to hers. His hips had begun to rock slowly back and forth, causing her breath to catch and eyes to glaze over with longing.
Duo began tracing his tongue over her lips and gently pushed them open, snaking in his tongue and dueling with her own.
Sophia’s mind went completely blank. Faintly, in the back of her mind, she could hear a dull ringing. Opening her eyes, she saw her communicator buzzing on her bedside table. Sensing he had lost her attention, Duo stopped and stared at the machine.
"Hateful piece of shit," he muttered at the communicator, pushing himself slowly off Sophia and into a sitting position on her bed. He picked up a pillow and placed it over his lap as Sophia sat up as well. Hitting the audio button on the communicator, a blank screen came up but the background noise from wherever the person was calling came in loud and clear.
"Yes, hello," Sophia said, her voice deep and husky. She cleared her throat as the person started to speak.
"Miss Sophia, I’m calling on behalf of Master Quatre. He requested I ask what time you would be by today."
Duo groaned and began muttering obscenities under his breath. Sophia rubbed her eyes and answered the receptionist as politely as she could.
"Um, tell Quatre we’ll probably arrive around 4 o’clock. Thanks."
Quickly disconnecting the transmission, Sophia fell back onto the bed. Duo cleared his throat and tossed her pillow at her.
"We have 5 minutes."
Sophia opened both eyes and stared at him. He rose from the bed, keeping his front from her. "I’ve gotta go pour a glass of cold water down my pants, but I’ll see you in the meeting room."
"’Kay."
Duo walked to the door, and he cast a final glance in her direction before closing the door behind him. Sophia stood shakily and walked to her dresser.
"Hormones. Gotta love ‘em."
