Chapter One

Preparation

“Gotham city. Eighth oldest in the country with over two million people living there and closed off to the outside world since the twenties. Shall I go on?”

Devon shook his head. “No. That is enough Kitt. You know the history.”

Michael rubbed the back of his head. “Isn’t that where the Bat-thing is?”

“Batman.” Kitt corrected. “In the time when Gotham was first shut out from the world, conventionally speaking, Batman became a street hero. They say he guarded the city for nearly sixty years.”

“Must be an old man now.” Michael said with amazement.

“No one is sure what happened to him. But rumors are in great supply. The three most prevalent are that one: he died, two: he dissolved back in to the city, and three: he was abducted by men from mars.”

Michael laughed. “So, why all of this Gotham talk Devon?”

“Because they also say Batman has returned.”

“They?” Michael asked.

“Everyone. But some are not happy about it. One man called us and asked for our help. It appears that a heavily scurried computer matrix hacked into top-secret files concerning a highly toxic chemical known as Red-13. This matrix has never been proven to exist, until now. Three files were traced to three different computers. One was nothing but a dead end. The other two were from a school building.”

“A school?” Michael asked. “What, Is this Batman a teacher too?”

“No one knows. But the fact that the files were hacked into from the school twice, four months apart, suggests that whoever it was works at, or attends, this school.”

“And how can we help?” Michael asked. “I’m not young enough to be in School, and I can’t teach.”

“And they won’t let me in the city. I don’t fit the car codas.” Kitt added.

“No. You don’t. But they need our help any way.”

“Kitt’s right, he’ll stick out like a sore thumb. And he can’t go to school.”

“But your wrong, Michael. We need Kitt in that school because he is a computer and can interface with the Batman’s computer. You will be his back up and guide.”

“Guide, for what?”

Devon smiled. “For being human.”

“WHAT?” Kitt yelped.

“There are an’droids built in Gotham. You can’t tell that they aren’t real until it breaks down or is destroyed. But they are not for street or public use. They are for government or labor use only. Some are used as stand-ins for people in public when there is a threat or danger of assassination. Others are slaves.” Devon glanced over at Kitt. “Mindless slaves. But because we are a corporation for Law and Government we have obtained the necessary papers to use an android body that looks like any other human.”

“I... I don’t know what to say.” Kitt stammered. “What will I be doing?”

“Infiltrating the school. When school is over you will stay behind and try to trace the leads to the Batman’s computer, and, if at all possible, find out just who the Batman is.”

“I see. And Michael?”

“He will be posing as your legal guardian.”

“My... guardian?” Kitt milled it over for a moment. “This won’t be permanent, will it?”

“No.” Devon said with a smile. “You will be returned to your own body after this is all over.”

“I don’t suppose Bonnie could come.” Michael hinted.

“She’ll be there, in case some thing happens, like always. You both have apartments in the same building, overlooking the school. Kitt will be staying with you.”

“An apartment?” Kitt asked. “I’m sorry, but I don’t like this at all.”

Devon sighed. “This Batman is powerful, Kitt. He could hurt someone. And with the chemical, he could wipe out the whole city.”

“I understand.” Kitt said. After a moment: “What will I look like?”

Devon thought for a moment. “I don’t know. The robotics team never told me.”

“I’ll be male... won’t I?” Kitt asked slowly.

Devon nodded. “Yes. Of course! What else would you be?”

“What else is there?” Kitt replied.

Michael grimaced. “You’re not going to be a girl, Kitt.”

“I’m not one now.” Kitt paused. “So when do we... change me?”

“Tomorrow.” Devon answered. “Don’t worry Kitt, it shouldn’t be too bad.”

<><>*<><>

Michael had pulled up a chair and sat next to Kitt. “Worried?”

“Yes.”

“So am I.” Michael reached out and patted Kitt’s hood. “I like you this way.”

“So do I.”

Bonnie entered the room and cleared her throat. “It’s time. Michael, I’m afraid you are going to have to leave.”

He sighed and gave Kitt another pat on the hood. “Good luck Pal.”

“Thank you, Michael.”

Michael got up and walked out the door. For the next nine hours he paced, drank coffee, paced, watched TV, paced and read magazines. Finally, Bonnie came out of the room. She looked tired.

Michael gave her his full, undivided, attention. “Well?”

“He’s weak right now, but we expected that. It took a lot of energy to transplant him. He’s... in bed now.”

“That sounds so bizarre.” Michael sighed.

“You think that is bizarre, just wait until you see him.” She took his hand and led him into the room. Michael first noticed Kitt’s car body sitting dead to one side. Michael swallowed. Bonnie led him further into the room and to a ring of curtains.

“He’s in here.”

Michael nodded. “You coming?”

“Sure.” She parted the fabric and stepped in. Michael followed her. He gasped.

Kitt’s human body was young, about 18, with very pale skin.

“He’ll get some color back when he recharges.” Bonnie said.

Michael nodded and noticed the dark black hair. It was cut short and a bit messy. His eyes, half open, were a stunning green. But around the edges they were red. It was a spectacular combination. Michael reached down and lightly touched Kitt’s shoulder. The false skin was very life like. Kitt opened his eyes a bit wider and looked over at Michael.

“Hay pal. How do you feel?”

Kitt closed his eyes. “I hate it.” He swallowed. “I want to change back. This is too different.”

“It is.” Michael agreed. “But we need to do this, just for a while. OK?”

“OK.” Kitt said quietly. “But the second it’s over, I change back.”

Bonnie reached down and took his hand. Kitt pulled it away. Bonnie bit her lower lip and glanced up at Michael. She grabbed his arm and pulled him away.

“Do you think he can cope?”

“Bad time to ask.” He replied. “Should have asked that before you did that to him.”

“Michael, I had no control over this. I could only help or ignore it completely.”

He sighed. “OK. I’m sorry. But to see him like that... it just isn’t right.”

“I know.” She said softly. “But we shouldn’t be in Gotham for more than a month.”

“A month?”

“Shhh! Kitt doesn’t know yet.” She whispered. “Now go get some sleep, you look like you need it.”

“So do you. And I want to stay with him.”

She nodded. “I’ll get some cots.”

“Some cots? I just need one.”

She smiled wearily. “I’m going to stay too.”

<><>*<><>

Kitt trembled and sat back down. “I can’t do this.”

“Yes you can Kitt. Now stand up and walk over to me.” Bonnie reached her hand out to him. “It’s only a few feet.”

Kitt, clearly distressed and looking afraid, slowly stood up. “I don’t know...”

“Come on Kitt.” Michael coaxed. “What are you afraid of?”

Kitt hesitated. Yes, what indeed? He gathered up his courage and took a step. When he didn’t collapse, he took another. He found that he was rather steady. A moment later, he made it over to Bonnie. He smiled weakly. “I did it.”

“You sure did.” Michael said, grinning slightly.

Kitt smoothed his hair back from his eyes. “Now what do I do?”

“You get up in the morning, the next thing is to get dressed.” Michael picked up a bag and handed it to Kitt. “Bonnie and I went shopping for you. I hope you like it.”

Kitt reluctantly opened the bag and pulled out a black sweater and black jeans. There was a pair of black sunglasses too, as well as socks and sneakers. All black.

“I do.” He gave them a helpless look. “But... I’m not sure what to do.”

Bonnie cleared her throat. “Come with me. I’ll show you.”

Kitt blushed. “Thank you.”

<><>*<><>

Devon entered the lab and looked around. Michael was talking to a scientist. Bonnie was nowhere to be seen. Neither was Kitt, for that matter. His car body was there, but Devon couldn’t spot anyone that fit Kitt’s new description. He walked up to Michael.

“Well?”

“Oh... Bonnie and I got him some clothes. She is helping him change. They’ll be back in a second.”

Devon nodded. “How do you think it is going?”

“Um, He’s not ready for this.” Michael sat down on Kitt’s bed. “I’m not ready for this.”

“You’ll adapt.” Devon said, sitting next to him.

“But will Kitt?” Michael asked concerned.

Just then Bonnie and Kitt reappeared. Over Bonnie’s left arm was Kitt’s ‘hospital gown’. To her right was Kitt. Dressed and looking like any other human being. Devon stood slowly and looked him over.

“Remarkable! Kitt, how do you feel?”

“Strange.”

“No doubt. But I’m sure you will get used to it.”

“I hope so.” Kitt said.

“You will.” Bonnie placed her hand on his shoulder. “Just try to relax.”

“OK.”

“And act human.” Michael added.

“I don’t know how.” Kitt replied. He stepped back. “I can’t.”

“Kitt.” Devon said. “Michael will help you. He and I decided to take you out in the city and let you watch people. It should prove very interesting... as well as educational.”

Kitt closed his eyes. “Yes. I’ll watch.”

<><>*<><>

For the next two days Michael tried to help Kitt, but the oddest things caught his attention. He thought nothing of being in a car next to Michael. But steps were more than a source of study. For the first time, Kitt was starting to understand why people did some of the things they did. Why things were shaped they way they were. The world seemed to explode.

Art. Dance. Theater. Skiing. Swimming. Riding a bike. Jumping rope. Playing with a ball. All of these things suddenly had new meaning.

Michael, at the end of the second day was exhausted. But Kitt was ready to go. For the moment, his new body was a huge source of wonder, and his curiosity was burning like never before.

Bonnie and Devon decided to take him out next. Michael thanked them and went to bed.

<><>*<><>

“Why?” Kitt asked.

Devon sighed. “Because if they stayed outside they would be exposed to the weather. You know that.”

Bonnie laughed. “Keep asking questions Kitt.”

Kitt smiled. “Why do people hold hands?”

Devon raised his eyebrow. “It’s a sign of deep affection. Also it can be useful for guiding someone through the dark.”

“Oh.” Kitt hugged himself. “I guess I knew that... but it seems different now.” He glanced up at the tree they were walking under. “OK... I don’t understand why children climb trees. It’s dangerous and often causes injuries.”

Devon smiled. “I use to climb a lot of trees when I was young. It was fun. I had a tree house. But you’re right. It is a hazard. I fell one time and broke my arm.”

“Did you stop climbing after that?” Bonnie asked.

Devon laughed. “No. Not until I was about twenty-six did I finally stop.”

Kitt shook his head slowly. “I still don’t understand.”

“Give it time, Kitt. Give it time.”

<><>*<><>

They had gone through the park, the mall, the bookstore (Slowly, Kitt wanted to look at everything) and finally, to a place on the docks. Kitt sat down on the edge and watched the water flow by. Devon and Bonnie backed away and left him to his own thoughts.

“He’s taking this well.” Devon said.

Bonnie nodded. “It’s still...” She shook her head again.

“I know. Every time I hear his voice in the hall I can’t help but think how on earth did Michael manage to get Kitt indoors? And then I wonder whether or not to fire him.”

Bonnie laughed. “I always wonder if someone has taken his CPU out again and I get frightened. Then I turn and see him.” She smiled softly. “I have to admit it, Devon, I like this.”

Devon sighed. “He’s not going to stay like this Bonnie. He’s a car. And as soon as the case is over, we are putting his CPU back into the car body.”

Bonnie nodded. “I know.” They walked to the end of the dock in silence and turned around. After a minute, Bonnie looked out to Kitt. “When do we go to Gotham?”

“Two more days.”

Bonnie sighed. “Only two more days. I don’t know Devon... I don’t think he’ll be ready.”

“Whether or not he is, doesn’t matter. Not to the case.”

Bonnie turned and started to get angry. Devon raised his hand.

“Let me finish. That is why I want both you and Michael right there. Kitt will need you. If he had a month, two months possibly like this, I may have sent just him. All we need is his expertise. But he’s not ready.”

Bonnie cooled and turned back to Kitt. “Thank you.”

Devon placed his hand on her shoulder. “Let’s get him and go home. Then we’ll all watch the movies we got today.”

<><>*<><>

Kitt was raw nerves. Michael reached out to put his hand on the slightly shivering shoulder, but the second he made contact Kitt yelped and jumped.

“Whoa buddy, calm down. It was just a movie!”

“But... Did you see that? What they did to those cars?”

Bonnie sighed. She turned and gave RC a nasty glare. “You just had to rent ‘The Brave Little Toaster’, didn’t you?”

“Hey, I didn’t know!”

Devon stippled his fingers and rested his chin on them. “Kitt. Sit down.”

Kitt obeyed. “It was sick!”

“It was a cartoon.” Devon said quietly.

“It was a sick cartoon!” Kitt hugged himself again and glanced over at Michael. “It was...”

“I know, pal.” He sighed and sat next to Kitt. It was still too hard to look directly at him this way. But he had to try. He turned and looked Kitt in the eyes. “It was fake. And you are letting your emotions get ahold of you.”

Kitt was about to retort, but he didn’t. After a second he closed his eyes and let his head drop. “I’m sorry.” He stood and started to walk away.

“Where are you going?” Bonnie asked.

“I’m turning in for the night.”

Bonnie sighed and stood to follow him. Devon stopped her.

“Let Michael handle this.” He whispered. Bonnie nodded and turned towards the door.

“I’m going to bed. Good night.” She turned to RC. “And I’m going to have a little talk with you later.”

He raised both of his hands. “I’m sorry!”

Devon placed his hand on RC’s shoulder. “Let’s go. We all need some rest.”

RC looked at Michael. “I’m sorry!”

Michael smiled. “I know. Kitt just needs more time.”

RC nodded and let Devon lead him to the door. “Tell Kitt I’m sorry?”

Michael nodded. “I’ll tell him.”

“Thanks!” RCIII retorted, before they were gone.

Michael turned to where Kitt had gone.

<><>*<><>

“This isn’t your room.”

“I’m a car. Cars stay in garages at night.” Kitt was sitting cross-legged on the cement floor in the center of the large garage.

“But you’re not a car right now.”

Kitt gave him a glare. Michael was a bit taken back. Before he had always suspected what Kitt might be feeling, but unless Kitt said something he never quite knew for sure. But now it was clear as... as the look on Kitt’s face.

Michael turned around and switched the lights off with a sigh. “Good night Kitt.” He shut the door.

Kitt wanted to call after him. In a way he wasn’t feeling up to being alone with his new body. Along with his body there had been some programs added to make him appear more human. So he could act human and not draw to much attention to himself. But in truth he was afraid. He glanced up at the door and his eyes flashed red.

He could take scans that way. Scans he was used to. Scans like when he was in his car body. Not like this new vision, human vision.

He could see Michael getting ready for bed. Kitt stopped the scanning. Now, instead of enjoying watching Michael get ready for the night he felt like he was intruding. Invading Michael’s privacy. He now understood why people did some things behind closed doors.

Kitt hugged his knees. This was too hard. Way too hard.

<><>*<><>

Michael yawned and stretched. He scratched his sides and back, then stood up. He looked around the bedroom and yawned again. He then moved on to the living room. He walked past the couch, the TV, the chairs and the stain on the rug. He then came to the door leading to the garage. He opened it and looked around.

All at once he was wide-awake.

Kitt was gone!

He whipped around to look for the phone... and spotted Kitt.

Kitt now had the luxury of sleep, or a version of it. He needed to recharge and he had to shut down nearly all the way to do it while he was in this body. He had the charger cable hooked up to his arm, much like an IV, and was sprawled out on the couch. He was breathing slowly, rhythmically.

Breathing. It regulated the temperature in Kitt’s body to keep his CPU cool. ‘Blood’ also kept him cool. It was red, and liquid, but far runnier than organic blood. And, to Michael’s amusement, Kitt could dream. Bonnie had insisted on giving Kitt this function. Devon finally backed her. The board approved, saying it would help convince people that Kitt was human, and passed it on to the engineers who constructed the body and added programs.

Despite everything Michael knew about Kitt’s new body, he didn’t know everything. Today, he would be talking to Dr. Floks, with Kitt, in a body briefing.

Michael walked over to Kitt and watched him. Kitt’s face was rather plain. And Michael now noticed how very real Kitt looked. He had been impressively so from the start, but to see him like this, sleeping was very different.

“Kitt. Wake up pal.” He shook Kitt’s shoulder gently.

Kitt opened his eyes and blinked. “What?”

“Time to get up. We need to get moving, or we’ll never make that meeting with Floks.”

<><>*<><>

“As you can see I have attempted to make Kitt as real as I could using whatever technology I could. I’m impressed with the outcome. He can do everything an organic can do, except for two things.”

“What are they?” Devon asked in his ‘I’m very fascinated by your work’ voice.

“They are assimilation of matter by ingestion and...” He paused, clearly unsure how to continue.

“And?” Michael asked.

“And, well, organic replication.”

Kitt looked a bit confused, then blushed. “Oh...” He managed.

Devon coughed. “Well, everything else is fine.”

Bonnie nodded. “He’s wonderful.” She hugged Kitt. “He’s just like how I dreamed he would be, if he were human.”

Kitt blushed harder. “Bonnie, please...”

She laughed and let him go. “Sorry.”

Michael stood up. “What about his programming? I know that was changed.”

Kitt dropped his gaze to the floor.

“Changed. Never. Added to yes, but I didn’t dare change his programming.” Floks gave him a hearty pat on the back. “He’s just a dandy computer! But he needed a way to seem more human. I added some superficial subroutines to help his core program interact with his body better.” He smiled and patted Kitt again, softer this time. “He’ll respond like any other teenage boy to how he feels. Smile, frown, laugh, I put it all in.”

Michael smiled. “Any thing else?”

“We ran over the important stuff.” Floks said. “I’m expected at a demonstration in twenty minutes in another building. I’d love to go over all the things I have done, but I’m afraid you’ll just have to learn them on your own. Of course, you can call me with any questions or if you need help. But for now, I’ll bid you ado.” He smiled and made a small bow, then left the room.

Michael wrapped his arm around Kitt’s shoulders, trying to force himself to act like Kitt was a human. He had to get it right before they left in the morning. Kitt pushed his arm off.

Devon sighed and walked to the door. “I have paperwork to do before this day is over.” He glanced over at Kitt. “I’ll see you all off tomorrow.”

“What time is the plane leaving?” Bonnie asked.

Kitt’s eyes widened. “PLANE?”

Devon sighed and opened the door. “See you in the morning, Bonnie, Michael.” He shut the door.

<><>*<><>

Eight hours of flight had left Bonnie and Michael exhausted. Kitt was, however, wired with raw nerves. He was shivering slightly and hugging himself as if his life was going to end at any second. Michael finally reached over and grabbed one of Kitt’s hands.

“Calm down.” He whispered. “We are going to land in fifteen minutes.”

“But that’s when accidents happen, Michael!” Kitt nearly yelped. “They are fine until they hit the ground!”

Bonnie took the other hand and pulled it to her cheek. “Kitt, we’ll be fine.”

Michael pulled Kitt’s other hand down and swapped it with Bonnie’s unwrapping them from Kitt’s body. Kitt closed his eyes.

“I’m feeling... sick.”

“Just relax.” Bonnie said soothingly. The plane tilted.

The com fizzed to life. “This is your captain speaking, we are going to land in ten minutes, please fasten your seat belts.”

Kitt swallowed.

Bonnie leaned past Kitt and gave Michael a sad look. “Do something!” She mouthed.

He nodded. “Kitt, remember when we went to the mountains and you turbo boosted over the logs?”

He nodded.

“We had a rough landing then.”

He nodded. “Yes. We did.”

“But we came through it just fine.”

The plane dipped and Kitt bit his lip. “We did.”

“This will be just the same, only no mudslide.”

Kitt smiled weakly. “I trust you, Michael, Bonnie, but not this plane.”

Suddenly the whole cabin shook and started to rumble. Kitt nearly leapt out of his seat.

The com system sounded again. “Welcome to Gotham city, please stand by for inspection.”

Chapter Two

Gotham City

Michael looked around wide eyed. “So this is Gotham.” He glanced out the window to the street below. The cars were very... gothic. Everything was. Dark, gray and black, red highlights... gargoyles on most of the buildings... old or new... Michael smiled. “I like it.”

Kitt was watching out the window. He smiled faintly. “Look at that.”

Michael stood next to him. “What?”

Kitt pointed. A large car was slowly entering an intersection. It looked like it was a hundred year old future poster. And it was black. Jet black.

“Like it?” Michael asked.

Kitt nodded. One of the things he was learning to do. “I do, I like it indeed.”

Bonnie walked over to them and watched the car slide its way under a street lamp. It shimmered and then dissolved into the shadows of a building.

“What was that?” She asked.

“Some of the native wild life.” Someone said from behind them.

The three of them turned and looked at a well dressed older man. He smiled dryly and extended his hand to Michael. “My name is Nive. I was the one who called your foundation. Mr. Miles described you... and your...” He paused and gave Kitt a weary glance. “...your computer. He said you might be able to help me.”

Michael nodded. “We were given a description of you as well.” Michael replied as he took Nive’s hand. “We were told you would show us to our temporary lodging.”

Nive nodded. “Yes, I have a car waiting.”

“Thanks.” Michael picked up his bags and Bonnie’s. Kitt grabbed his bag and tossed it over his shoulder.

Nive raised his hand. “Please, allow me.” He turned around and cleared his throat. “Candy, Alice, come here!”

No sooner had he called, then two thin women appeared. Each one was in a tight blue cat suit with blue shades. One was blond, the other brunette. Both stopped and stood with a calm, yet dignified look. “You called, Mr. Nive?” They chimed.

“Take the bags to the car and inform Lily she is to drive up front to pick us up.”

Kitt lowered his shades and scanned them. “An’droids?”

“Yes.” Nive said with a smug nod. “Built to protect and serve me with out question. They are as loyal as dogs, more expensive, and better looking.”

“No doubt.” Michael replied. “Where did they come from?”

“Biotech. Same as your android. I assume it functions much like they do.”

Bonnie placed her hand on Kitt’s shoulder. “He wasn’t programmed to simply obey commands.”

Nive gave Kitt a cold look and nodded. “If you will, Mr. Knight.”

Michael nodded. He felt a twinge of dislike for the man in front of him. He glanced over at Bonnie and decided the same twinge was going through her. He could only guess at what Kitt was feeling.

<><>*<><>

Kitt watched the two female ‘droids with a mild curiosity. Both had badges on their suits with the words ‘Bio-Tec’ on them. Numbers followed. Tags to let people know that they were ‘droids. He glanced at the driving ‘droid. She too, had an ID badge.

Quietly he pulled Michael off to the side. “Michael, why would Mr. Nive have androids like these? If they are bodyguards wouldn’t he want male types to discourage any confrontations? These would suggest and invite, if I may say so.”

Michael nodded. “It’s all show pal. He’s got money and he wants people to see just what he can do with it.”

“I see. Michael, he doesn’t seem to like me.”

“I noticed.” He glanced over at Bonnie. “Don’t worry pal. Once we get to the apartments he’ll be out of our hair.” Michael cast Kitt a small smile. “Besides, it doesn’t matter if he likes you or not, pal. I do.”

Kitt smiled, unable to hide his emotions in this body. “Your right.”

<><>*<><>

The ride through Gotham was breathtaking to Michael and Bonnie. The buildings and surrounding sculptures were a never-ending source of fascination to them. Kitt was impressed with the fact that the limo they were in, like most of the cars, was hovering above the road.

Nive explained that it was easier to hover in Gotham then to repave the roads from constant traffic. The only cars with wheels, like the one they had first seen, needed very expensive permits to be driven on the streets. This also meant the streets could be built with lighter and less durable material. This meant that they could be suspended from the tall skyscrapers. And from there, only imagination could limit Gotham.

Michael was more than impressed. Bonnie was glued to the window, wanting to look everything over all at once. But Kitt wasn’t as fascinated with the city as he thought he might be. Right now he was fighting off the unfamiliar feelings of his human body. Bonnie finally noticed his look of discomfort and wrapped her arm around him. Despite the fact that it only made him more aware of his new body he found that this simple action felt good. Slowly he leaned up against her.

“You OK?” She asked.

“I’m better, thank you.”

Michael turned around and looked him over. “Car sick?”

Kitt smiled a bit. “Very funny Michael.” He was about to toss a comeback at his partner when he caught Nive’s look. The man was not amused. Kitt felt like he wanted to hide. Aside from feeling sickeningly different he also felt vulnerable like this. And judging from Nive’s power, it wouldn’t be much to get rid of Kitt without causing much more than a whisper in this city. The ‘droids next to the man were testimony to that. They were little more than dolls for the rich and powerful. Or slaves. Whichever seemed most fitting.

Suddenly Kitt felt very helpless.

<><>*<><>

“Did you see the one driving?” Bonnie asked as she poured herself a cup of coffee. “She must have cost quite a bit.”

Michael scrunched up his nose. “All three of them... and just as show. I’d like to trade him places for a day.”

Bonnie harrumphed. “I know you would, I would too; servants never complaining, never wanting more than to serve you.” She laughed. “I know I’d move here if I had the money.”

Michael nodded. “So would I.”

Kitt watched them joke and laugh at the life in Gotham. As he did so, he started to feel more and more timid. Finally, he pulled back into the back room and locked the door. He turned, slumped against it, and let himself slide to the floor. After a minute, he pulled his knees up to his chest and let his head down on them. He wasn’t sure why, but this made him feel a little better. He reasoned that when humans felt like he did, that is to say venerable and weak, the try to become small and harder to see. It made sense, but it didn’t change anything to know why he was doing it. All he wanted to do was shut down until this was all over.

Suddenly something hit his hand. He looked down and saw that it was a small drop of water. He raised his hand and wondered where it came from. Then, to his disgust, he realized what had happened. He reached up to his eyes and rubbed them.

“Tears... one of the surprises from the good Dr. Floks.” Kitt’s voice held sarcasm, but he could always hide his feelings in his voice. Now he was unable to even do that.

He stood and walked over to the mirror to look at his face. It wasn’t bad looking, as far as he could tell, but he didn’t want it. It wasn’t who, or for that matter, what he was. He tried to stop the tears, but couldn’t. Finally, he gave in and returned to his spot next to the door.

Just as he was pulling his knees back up someone knocked at the door. “Kitt?” It was Michael.

“Yes?”

“What are you doing in there?”

“Getting ready to charge for the night.”

There was a moment of silence. “Your charger is out here.”

“I’ll get it in a second.” Kitt replied. He then stood and rubbed his eyes again.

“OK.” He heard Michael walk away. Relieved, he slumped against the door. There was no way he wanted Michael to know about what he was feeling. If he couldn’t do his job then he would be shut down and tinkered with again. Kitt wasn’t sure that he could stand it in this body.

<><>*<><>

Michael shook his head. “Something’s wrong, Bonnie.”

She sighed. “He heard us talking.”

Michael nodded and folded his arms. “Which one of us gets to go in there first?”

Bonnie picked up his charger and sighed. “I’ll go.”

Just as she turned around Kitt came out and smiled faintly. “I forgot it. Must be another human addition Floks gave me.” He took the charger from Bonnie.

“Kitt, you OK?” She asked.

“I’m fine. Good night.” He turned and went back in to his room. Michael sighed.

“I hope this case is over soon.”

<><>*<><>

Kitt awoke. For a second he nearly panicked until his memory kicked on to full. His room, as plain in the daylight as at night, was mocking him. He yanked the charge wires out of his arm and bolted to the door. He stopped when he reached it and took a deep, slow breath. Then he went in to the living room. Michael was already up and eating toast. He glanced over at Kitt and nodded.

“Morning pal.”

Kitt, in spite of himself, rolled his eyes. “How many times must I remind you not to speak with food in your mouth? You are getting crumbs every where.”

“I’ll clean it up.” Michael retorted.

“No, you won’t, you never do. Bonnie always...” He stopped. “Hmmm.”

“What?”

“I guess I’ll have to clean it up now.”

Michael raised an eyebrow. “I guess you could.”

Kitt rolled his eyes again. Suddenly he twitched and touched his temple.

“What’s wrong?” Michael asked as he took another bite.

“Devon’s calling.”

“You can feel it?” Michael managed around the toast.

Kitt nodded and grabbed the phone. “Hello?”

“Kitt?” Devon sounded a bit confused. “Where is Michael?”

Kitt glanced over and watched as Michael tried to wash down the toast with coffee. “He’s busy right this second.” Kitt pulled the phone away from him. “For crying out loud Michael, look at the mess!”

“Sorry.”

Kitt returned the phone to his ear. “Is there something I can do for you?”

“Well,” Devon replied. “I have discovered a nest of termites in my house and decided to have an exterminator take care of the problem. To make a long story short I have decided to join you in Gotham.”

“I see.” Kitt said slowly. “Where will you stay?”

“In the same apartment building as you. Really, I must talk to Michael.”

“Hold on.” Kitt picked up the phone base and pulled it over to the table. “Here... swallow first...OK.” Kitt handed him the phone.

“Yo, Dev, what’s up?” There was a moment of silence. “Pests? I’ll bet...really? I’ll tell Bonnie. OK Devon, thanks for the warning. Bye.” Michael hung up and Kitt returned the phone to its place.

“Do you want me to inform Bonnie?” He asked.

Michael shook his head. “No, I’ll tell her.” He stood and walked to the door. I’ll be back in a second.”

Kitt placed his hand on his hip. “And this mess?”

Michael hesitated.

“You made it...”

“Consider it practice, Kitt.” And with that, Michael left. Kitt sighed, something he wasn’t sure if he meant to do or not, and started to look for the broom.

<><>*<><>

Michael opened the door and froze. Kitt was vacuuming. He looked rather pleased with himself.

“Kitt?”

Kitt switched off the appliance and faced Michael. “What did you eat last night? Popcorn?”

Michael sighed. “Yeah. But don’t worry about it, pal, your’re not a slave ‘bot. I’ll clean it up... sooner or later.”

“Later. I know you remember? From day one, I’ve known you.”

Michael laughed. “OK, you got me.” Michael shut the door and took the vacuum from Kitt. “You can do it later. Right now Bonnie has decided that you need school clothes. She may be right, you do only have one outfit.”

“I like the one I have. Besides, why can’t a human wear the same thing everyday. I’ve never understood that.”

“Um...” Michael shrugged. “You got me pal. Come on, let’s go.”

<><>*<><>

Kitt looked the mall over with awe. The one in LA wasn’t like this. Nothing on earth was like this. Bonnie was equally impressed. The sheer size was fantastic. The number of people was overwhelming. And the map with the “you are here” sign was holographic. Kitt looked at it for a long time. He then smiled and looked around.

“This place is incredible.”

“You can say that again.” Bonnie murmured.

“Michael should have come.” Kitt said with a bit of a sigh. He would love this place.

“He’d never leave.” Bonnie replied.

Kitt returned to the map. “Bonnie, they have a virtual reality center here.”

Bonnie smiled. “Well, we do have all day and a thousand credits. Why not?”

Kitt returned her smile. “Dare we?”

Bonnie laughed. “What harm could it do?” Besides, you aren’t going into that school for another three days. Why not?”

<><>*<><>

Kitt failed miserably at virtual bot boxing, simply because he wasn’t really good at being human yet. And truth be told, he would never admit that he lost to Bonnie. Bonnie promised not to tell Michael, but only if Kitt helped her with her unpacking. Kitt reluctantly agreed and they shook hands on it.

The next game was racing. Kitt nearly dared Bonnie to a match.

“I don’t know Kitt, isn’t it a little unfair? You are a car and all.” She said quietly.

“Fair? How about knocking me flat eight times in a row in ‘Bot Boxing? Was that fair?”

She laughed and shook her head. “Good point. But I get the funny looking green car.”

“Fine, I’ll take the black one.”

Bonnie smiled. “Why am I not surprised?”

Kitt was about to dig up a comeback when someone bumped into him. She was holding a bunch of boxes and the fell to the floor. Kitt forgot his banter and knelt to help her pick them up.

“I’m sorry, I should have looked where I was going.”

Kitt shrugged. “It’s quite all right, Miss.”

She wrinkled her nose. “Miss? That’s too old fashioned.” She extended her hand. “Please, call me Dana.”

“My name is Kitt.” He stood and took her hand to help her up. She smiled sweetly and tucked her long black hair behind her ear.

“You’re new here. Are you from Gotham?”

“No. I live in LA most of the time.”

“Hey, Dana? You all right?” A young man called. He walked over to them and looked Kitt over. “Hi.”

“Ter, this is Kitt, he’s from LA.” Dana said. “And I didn’t catch your name.” She said looking at Bonnie.

“Barstow, Bonnie Barstow. Pleased to meet you.”

“I’m Terry McGuiness.” The youth said. “What brings you to Gotham?”

“Work.” Kitt said simply.

Terry gave Kitt another look over. “You look about my age. What kind of work do you do?”

“Terry.” Dana slapped him on the shoulder. “Be nice, you always drill new comers.”

“Sorry.” He said dryly. “But still...” He let the sentence hang.

“I work.” Bonnie said. “I’m here with some of my fellow workers. Kitt’s going to go to school here.”

Dana brightened. “Which school?”

“The one on the corner of Oxford and Main.” Kitt replied.

Both Terry and Dana looked at each other. Then back at Kitt.

“That’s where we go...” Terry was interrupted by his cell phone; he answered it. “What’s up...? Where...? On my way.” He hung up and gave Dana a kiss on the cheek. “The big guy needs me. See you around, Kitt.” He turned and walked away. Dana folded her arms.

“Him and his job!”

“The big guy?” Bonnie asked.

“Bruce Wayne; the richest man in Gotham. No one knows him... except for Terry.” She smiled faintly.

“He works for Wayne?” Kitt asked.

She nodded. “Don’t ask me why or how, but he does.” She shrugged and sighed. “I just wish he wouldn’t take his job so seriously. He spends so much time with Wayne anymore.”

Bonnie smiled gently. “Boyfriend?”

Dana nodded. “Yeah. Or, I think he is.”

<><>*<><>

“Bruce Wayne owns the larger half of Wayne and Powers Corporation. The corporation has fields ranging from recycling to factory work to science and development to book publishing.” Kitt looked up at Michael and shrugged. “From what I see this guy is clean. Why are you having me look him up?”

“Because money is the root of all evil, pal. A guy that rich has got to have some big secrets.”

“What about the kid?” Bonnie asked. “Why would he be working for Wayne?”

Kitt, started to type again. He smiled faintly. “He comes from a broken family, his father was murdered by a gang of thugs called Jokers, and he was on the street for several years, where he had low grades and several offenses involving the law. But about a year and six months ago, he started to work for Wayne. From there on out, his grades improved and he stopped getting into trouble.”

“Sounds good.” Bonnie said as she took a sip of coffee. “Dana said he was starting to frighten her until he started to work for this guy.”

Michael thought for a minute. “OK, I guess he’s not what we are after. Let’s look up every thing about Nive.”

Kitt folded his arms. “I already have. Nive isn’t much different then Wayne. He’s clean, except for exploitation of Androids.”

Michael sighed. “Hard facts of digital life pal. But you’re better than his robots.”

Bonnie nodded and placed her hand on Kitt’s shoulder. “I’d say so. You’re better then half of the people I know.”

Kitt started to type again. “I’m a computer, Bonnie. But thank you anyway.”

Michael sighed and looked at Bonnie with a sorry expression. “Kitt, are you OK?”

“I’m fine.” Kitt replied.

“Kitt.” Bonnie said softly. “You need to tell us if you are having a problem. You are going to be on your own for nearly eight hours a day five days a week until we can hack this computer.”

Kitt continued to type.

“Come on pal. Talk to us.”

Kitt stopped typing and folded his hands on his lap. “I still don’t like this, Michael. I’m too vulnerable this way. What if you get into trouble and I can’t help you?”

Michael sighed. “Look Kitt, all we are doing is trying to find out if a computer matrix exists. And if it does, where it is, and what it does. That’s our job and that’s what we are going to do. I can’t promise you it won’t be risky, but I have never been able to promise that. Besides, if that Red 13 gets in to the wrong hands, this whole city, possibly even more, could be in danger.”

“But this computer is guarded by a legendary person of incredible feats. Michael, this Batman will most certainly try to stop us. And when he does, I won’t be able to protect you. I may not even be able to hack into the matrix.” Kitt turned to face them. “Michael, I can’t stand the thought of what might happen if I can’t do what I was designed to do.”

“And what is that Kitt?” Bonnie asked.

“Protect you, Michael for the most part, but both of you. And now Devon is coming.” Kitt hugged himself without thinking about it. “Michael, I can’t do this... Not like this.”

An odd silence followed Kitt’s words and for a second, no one moved. Finally Michael reached out and rubbed Kitt’s cheek. Kitt realized what was happening and tried to turn away. But Michael grabbed his chin.

“You see what I mean? Turn me back.”

Michael let him go and walked over to the window. He leaned against the wall and looked out over the city’s lights. Even in the dark, you could see that Gotham was not like any other city. Michael gazed out over the odd world and sighed. “I really wish I could help you pal. But I can’t.”

Kitt stood and followed him over. He didn’t face Michael, but peered out over the city with him. “I know. I’m sorry. I should have never said anything. But I can’t help the worrying.”

“That’s why I trust you, Kitt. I know that you, whatever form you are in, will do your best in every situation.” He turned to Kitt. “For now, we’ll just play it safe. OK?”

“OK.”

“And when this is all over you get to drive for a month.”

Kitt glanced up. “Promise?”

“Yes.”

Bonnie smiled as they continued to talk; Michael reassuring Kitt, and Kitt hanging off every word. It was a conversation often repeated, but now it seemed different. She was about to add her own comment when Michael tossed his arm around Kitt’s shoulder. Kitt didn’t pull away like he had from time to time; instead he stayed close. Yes, different indeed. Kitt was adapting to being human. And at this pace he would soon have her fooled.

<><>*<><>

Devon looked around the busy airport with wide eyes. In all of his travel, he had never seen anything like this. He gazed at the architecture and masonry with an expensive eye. He right away saw the beauty in the dark lines and bold curves. In seconds, he was lost in the sheer display of the city itself and forgot to look out for Michael and the others.

He in fact didn’t even have to look out for them. As soon as he had gotten off of the plane, Kitt scanned him. He was now making his way through the thin crowd to Devon, leading Bonnie and Michael.

“YO, Dev!” Michael called as soon as he could see the older man. Devon pulled away from one of the huge sculptures and looked over at Michael.

“Michael, did you see this piece of artwork? It’s exquisite!”

Michael nodded. “Yes Devon, I saw it. But you should see the cars, right Kitt?”

Kitt was pulled in close to Bonnie trying to avoid a rush of people trying to get on to another flight. “I’m sorry, what?”

“The cars. What do you think about them?”

Devon turned his full attention to Kitt. “Yes, my boy, what do you make of the cars here?”

Kitt blinked. He gave Devon a funny look.

“What?”

“You never used that phrase on me.”

“What phrase?” Devon asked.

“You said ‘my boy’.” Bonnie replied. “That shows he’s adapting well. Doesn’t it?”

Devon nodded. “Yes indeed. For a second I almost forgot what Kitt really was.”

Everyone laughed, except for Kitt. He was looking at something intently.

“What is it, Kitt?” Michael asked.

“Nothing. I just thought I saw something. Must have been a mistake.” But he continued to look at the crowd.

“I’m famished.” Devon said after a second. “Perhaps Kitt can spot a good place to eat.”

“I don’t know, Devon.” Michael said wearily. “Kitt doesn’t eat and he seems to have a thing against grease, fast food, or any thing that can make a lot of crumbs.”

Kitt turned towards Michael and folded his arms. “You would too if you couldn’t clean up your upholstery after someone got grease and crumbs all over you.”

“Well, I...”

“Kitt’s right, Michael.” Bonnie said. “Out of all the people I have ever met you are the king of crumbs.”

“Knight of crumbs.” Michael retorted.

“Whatever you are in relation to the small bits of food, Michael, it doesn’t matter at the moment. And I did spot a fast food restaurant near the 151 terminal. I can show you where if you would like. But fast food isn’t healthy for you. And after all of the fast food you already eat, you should try to avoid it on every occasion that presents itself.”

“I rest my case.” Michael said with a shrug. “Bonnie, you pick.”

Bonnie looked around. “I see a Chinese food place not far from here... How about that?”

“Sounds fine.” Devon said. “Any objection, Kitt?”

“Only if they serve unorthodox animal meat. And no raw food either.”

Devon laughed. “Right, shall we then?”

<><>*<><>

Devon watched the sun set from his bay window. It had been a long day; odd, new, and a bit frightening. He had found himself watching Kitt most of the day. Seeing people talk to him like they would talk to any other person. But he knew that if they had seen him only a week before, they would have been gawking or even frightened by what Kitt really was. Michael had been acting nearly the same, except he seemed a bit torn. Kitt was perhaps his best friend, and Michael was trying to treat him the same as he always had, but he couldn’t. Devon knew that Michael was adapting to Kitt’s new form too easily. He was accepting something that couldn’t last. FLAG didn’t own the body Kitt was in, and they couldn’t keep it. And Bonnie was even worse than Michael. She was now treating Kitt like her own family. Sure, it had been like that before, but now she was mothering him like he was her own child.

Kitt was a computer in a temporary body. And Devon knew that he had to keep that in mind, even if he hurt their feelings. Bonnie’s, Michael’s... and Kitt’s.

Especially Kitt’s.

He turned away from the window and froze in his tracks. Kitt was there, watching him from the door.

“I’m sorry. I knocked, but you didn’t respond. I’ll come back if you are busy.”

“No. Come in, please.” Devon indicated one of the chairs and Kitt politely entered and sat down. Devon sat across from him. “Can I help you?”

“Yes.” Kitt hesitated.

“What is it?”

“I don’t know if I can protect Michael like this.”

Devon raised his hand. “I know Kitt. The very same thoughts have gone through my head from the second I heard about this case. But I have faith in Michael’s abilities. You should too. Just remember, as soon as you are done on your half you and Michael can return to the foundation and you can change back.”

Kitt nodded. “Thank you.”

“Of course. Anything else?”

Kitt nodded. “Do you think this body will really fool people?”

Devon nodded. “It nearly fooled me.”

Chapter 3

School Days

Kitt looked around the hall in a dizzy confusion. Busy highways he could navigate fine, but in this crowd, he was overwhelmed. It wasn’t a bunch of objects moving in one direction for him to follow with rules and lanes, not by a long shot. This was confusion. Kitt started to back up but Bonnie grabbed a hold of his arm.

“Why now? You were at the mall, the airport, twice, and in so many other places. Why are you afraid of the school?”

“Because in those places there was order of some kind. This, Bonnie, is a riot.”

“No, this is high school. And just as long as there is no streaking, you’ll be fine.”

“Streaking?” Kitt asked.

“Never mind, Kitt.” Michael said. “Now look, there is nothing to be afraid of. Just remember why you are here and keep your eyes peeled for anyone that might be Batman related.”

Kitt nodded. “I’ll do that.”

“And call when everyone has cleared out.” Bonnie said.

“I will.”

“Good luck pal.” Michael said. He then shoved Kitt in to the crowd. He turned to Bonnie and folded his arms. “Streaking?”

“Never mind, Michael.”

<><>*<><>

Kitt had to fight the urge to scan the area. It would give him away in a second. So he took a slow, deep breath, and moved to find his appointed locker. Suddenly someone grabbed his arm. He jumped back and twisted to see who it was.

“Dana, you startled me!”

“In this crowd?” She asked.

“Well, I’m not used to this sort of thing.”

“Why not. Didn’t you go to school in LA?”

Kitt struggled to answer. “I... well, it wasn’t like this...” Someone called to Dana and Kitt felt relieved.

A pink haired girl with large bright eyes came up and smiled at Kitt. “You must be the new kid Dana told me about. My name’s Max.” She held out her hand, a custom Kitt was starting to question. But he shook her hand without voicing his wondering.

“My name is Kitt.”

“So I’ve heard. You look lost.”

“Confused is more like it.” Kitt admitted. “I can’t seem to find anything I should recognize.”

Max laughed. “Join the crowd, Kitt. Everyone here was new once. Come on, I’ll show you around before class.”

“Can’t pass that up.” Kitt said, nearly cringing at the thought that he was starting to sound like Michael. “I mean, thank you, that would be very helpful.”

Max raised her eyebrow. “Your right, Dana. Kitt’s an old fashioned guy.” She smiled wearily. “I sort of like that, a man with manners. Beats the regulars around here.”

Dana laughed. “That’s for sure. So how long are you going to be in Gotham, Kitt?”

“I’m not sure. As soon as the work is done we have to leave for LA again. Most likely before the month is up.”

Both girls looked disappointed. Max sighed. “Well, good things come and go. Come on Kitt, I’ll show you around.” She grabbed his arm and pulled him out in to the mess of humans. Kitt bit his lip and followed, trying not to panic.

“Is it always like this?” He asked.

“Yep. But after hours it’s better. That’s when I like it here. It’s shway then.”

“Shway?”

Max sighed. “I can see this master has much to teach the student.”

Kitt smiled. “I was planning on using the computers here after the classes got out. I need to look up things.”

Max pulled him to and alcove between the lockers and the wall. “That’s what I do here most of the time. Now look, class starts in fifteen minutes. I start with math, you?”

“Science.”

“Down the hall and to he right. Meet me here after the class and I’ll show you the next place.”

“OK. Thank you, Max.”

She nodded. “Right, Later.”

<><>*<><>

The first half of the day had passed without much trouble. Kitt simply ‘fit in’. He knew everything already, so it only took him a minute or two to finish his assignments. But when PE came around, he knew he had a problem.

Max jogged up to him and smiled. Terry and Dana were right behind her. Terry gave him another look over and seemed to be sizing him up. Max simply smiled. “You ready for this?”

“For what?”

“You seem to be more of a book person then a PE person.” She replied.

“How can you tell?”

She smirked. “The look on your face.”

Dana nodded. “You look worried. Is there anything wrong?”

“No. I’ll be quite fine, thank you.”

Terry attempted a small smile. “You didn’t eat anything at lunch.”

Kitt thought for a moment. He and Bonnie had come up with the story; it was now time to tell it. “I have trouble swallowing. I have to eat at night. I’m on a special diet.”

The others looked suspicious.

“I was born like that.” He added.

“Wow, unshway.” Dana said.

“So what do you eat?” Terry asked.

“Um...”

Dana smacked his arm. “Terry McGuiness, you can be so impolite!”

“Sorry.”

Max rolled her eyes. “Hey, come on, we’ll be late again.”

Dana smiled. “Race?”

“OK.” Max grinned. “But loser gets to buy everyone else’s VR tickets for a week.”

Terry grinned. “You’re on.”

A moment later, the two were running off. Dana sighed. “I didn’t mean it!” She called.

“Not sporty?” Kitt asked.

She shook her head. “Nope, not at all.”

“I only race in cars.” Kitt smiled at the memories. “I race with Michael.”

“Is he your dad?”

“Who? Michael?”

She nodded.

“Um... sort of. He’s been with me from the time I came in to the world... so... sort of, I guess.”

“Is Bonnie your Mom?”

Kitt shrugged. “They both have been there from day one, caring for me and looking after me. In a way, I suppose they are my parents.” He thought about it for a second. “Yes... it sounds odd, but in a way it sounds right.”

Dana looked at him and tilted her head. “So, do you have parents?”

“Well, my ‘father’, if you could call him that... I mean the man who created me...” Kitt stopped. He sighed. “He died before I ever met him. And I don’t have a mother.”

“I’m sorry.”

“Sometimes I am too. But Michael knew him. And Michael takes care of me. So I don’t worry about it.”

“Well, so long as you are loved.”

Kitt smiled. “That I am.”

<><>*<><>

Kitt sighed and slumped against his locker. Nearly everyone was gone and his power packs were drained. Only an hours’ work tonight, anymore and he would drain completely. But firstm he had to call and tell them what was up.

He walked down the silent hall to the phone. As he dialed, he noticed Max down the hall talking to someone on her cell phone. She looked worried. Kitt would have called to her but someone picked up the phone on the other end.

“Hello?”

“Michael?” Kitt suddenly felt a bit more energized, but more eager to return to the apartment.

“Hey Kitt. How did everything go?”

Kitt looked over his shoulder. No one but Max was there and she couldn’t hear him. “Michael, it was incredible. Sixty-four people spoke to me today and not one said ‘Oh, it can talk’.”

Michael laughed. “Welcome to humanity pal.” There was a pause. Kitt could hear Bonnie demanding the phone. Michael was fending her off. Finally, he came back. “Did you like it?”

“Every thing but PE. I could have done without that.”

“What happened?”

“This body simply does not handle like a Trans-Am, Michael. I can’t seem to stay coordinated.”

“Sounds like me when I was that age.” Michael said slowly. “You can’t tell now, but back then I was all thumbs and had two left feet.”

“You’re right, I can’t tell now.” He glanced back at Max, who was hanging up. “I should go now. Max is going to show me around the building some more before I get on the computer.”

“Who’s Max?” Michael asked.

“Just one of the students here. I have to go. I’ll be home soon. My power packs are getting low.”

“OK, Kitt. See you soon.”

“Bye.” Kitt hung up the phone and turned to Max. She still looked worried.

“Something wrong?”

“Nothing you can help with. Come on, I’ll show you the left wing. Then I need to get on the computer.”

<><>*<><>

Kitt entered the apartment and hung up his book bag. He felt nearly completely drained, and, except for his added knowledge of the school, thanks to Max, he had not learned a thing that day, about Batman or otherwise.

Michael entered the living room from the kitchen and grinned. “Welcome back. You look beat.”

“Beat is not strong enough of a word, Michael.” Kitt said. He knelt down and untied his shoe. “I got nowhere on the search today.” He paused. “I take that back... I found a matrix dedicated to riding the world of Leprechauns.”

“Leprechauns?” Michael asked.

“Don’t ask.” He started to undo his other shoe. “Where is Bonnie?”

“Her place. But I’ll bet she’ll be here in a minute. She just about killed me to get the phone earlier.”

Kitt stood and pulled both shoes of with his feet. “Why?”

“She was worried about you.”

Kitt closed his eyes and smiled. “I’m glad I have you to worry about me. Half of the people in my class aren’t as lucky.”

Michael leaned against the couch. “Same here, pal. Now why don’t you sit down? You look like you are going to drop dead any second here.”

Kitt nodded and walked over to the couch. No sooner had he sat down than Bonnie came in. “Is Kitt...? Oh, you are back. How did the day go?”

“Shway.” Kitt said slowly.

“Shway?”

Kitt didn’t respond. He had slipped in to his own brand of sleep. Bonnie crossed the room and wrapped her arm around Michael. “He’s sort of cute like that.”

Michael tossed his arm over her shoulder. “He’s a car. Cars aren’t cute.”

“Some are.”

Michael knew he couldn’t win. “How about I get his charger and you get him to lay down?”

She nodded. “Good idea.” He pulled away, but she stopped him. “Michael?”

“Yeah?”

“He’s human, right? I mean has he always been this human and only now we can see it?” She looked at Kitt. “Or am I just seeing the new body?”

Michael sighed. “Bon...”

“Please?”

He sighed again. “Yes. He’s always been human.”

<><>*<><>

Kitt never thought it possible, but after two weeks of the routine he found himself extremely glad just to walk in the door and hang up his book bag. He took off his shoes and looked around. Coming home on Friday was wonderful. Bonnie and Michael would be fixing dinner soon, not that he ate, but he liked to be with them during that time. He found that he could charge then as well as at night when he shut down. It gave him just enough energy to be able to make it through the day.

He was even starting to like going to school. He liked talking to Max. She thought he was a human, and for just a little while, he was. During the morning before class, lunch, and in the time after class when they worked in the computer room. It went beyond pleasant.

Though he still wanted to go back to being a Trans-Am, it was starting to sound odd to him. The thought of becoming humanoid from a car was at first appalling. But going to a car from a human was just wrong. He knew he would readapt quickly, but this was something he was learning to enjoy.

Michael peered through the kitchen door. “Hi Kitt. Learn anything today?”

Kitt set his shoes down under the bench by the door. “Do you mean in class, or online?”

Michael shrugged. “Both.”

“Nothing.” Kitt rolled his shoulders back and stretched his neck. “This body is starting to feel tight in the neck.”

“You have been sitting at that computer too long, pal. Good thing this is a weekend.”

Kitt nodded. Nonverbal communication was easy now. He mused that he had learned something in school after all. “Michael?”

“Hmm?”

“Is Devon going to eat here tonight? I heard Bonnie talking about it before I left this morning.”

Michael shrugged. “I dunno’, why?”

“Just wondering.”

Michael looked at Kitt for a second. “Hey, pal, why don’t we go somewhere after dinner? It’s been too long since we have spent anytime together.”

Kitt smiled. “I would like that. And I know just the place too. But it will have to wait until Sunday. I really must charge completely for once. I feel as if my power cells are being strained.”

Michael laughed. “When I was in high school I liked to crash into bed early and sleep through the next day too. Be my guest.”

“Thank you, Michael.”

<><>*<><>

“Well?”

Michael blinked. “Wow!” Was all he could say.

“Wow indeed. This is where most of the students in my class hang out. Bonnie and I were here when we went shopping. I believe the correct term for this place is ‘Way shway’.”

“Shway?” Michael asked.

“Cool, groovy, shway... they are all the same.”

Michael nodded. “I like ‘cool’.”

Kitt shrugged. “Under the circumstances, I should use ‘shway’.”

“Suit your self, partner.” Michael looked around at all of the VR games. “So, which one first?”

“How about...”

“Kitt!” Someone shouted, interrupting him. He smiled and turned. “Hello, Max, Dana.”

The two girls walked up to him and smiled. “Who’s your friend?” Max asked.

“Dana, Max, this is Michael Knight. Michael, Dana, and Max.”

Michael took both girls hands. “Kitt has told me quite a bit about you, Max. I’m glad to finally meet you.”

Max glanced at Kitt as Dana giggled.

“Kitt said you were quite good with computers... coming from him it’s quite a complement.” Michael continued.

“Well, I do like the web.” Max said nodding. “And Kitt talks about you too.”

“Nothing bad, I hope.”

Dana shook her head. “I don’t think I have ever heard Kitt complain.”

Kitt shrugged. “Where is Terry?”

Dana rolled her eyes. “I don’t know. He’s with the big guy. He said he’d meet me at my house and bring me here, but he called Max and had her pick me up instead.” She looked over at Max and smiled. “Not that that’s a problem. It’s just...”

“I know.” Max said. “He’ll come. He just had some cleaning up to do at one of Wayne’s old dock warehouses.”

Dana sighed. “I don’t know whether to feel lucky that my boyfriend is working for the richest man in Gotham, or not.”

Michael smiled. “Kitt tells me he’s nice enough.”

Dana nodded. “A real gentleman... well, after Kitt.”

Max laughed. “Yeah, Mr. Knight, this did of yours is too good for his own good.” She poked Kitt in the chest as she spoke.

Kitt folded his arms. “Is that so...” He suddenly turned and glared. Dana looked his way and yelped.

Max growled.

Michael followed their looks and spotted several young men and a woman in clown outfits carrying chains, rubber chickens, and a bunch of other bizarre things. “Who are they?”

Kitt placed himself between the gang and the girls. “Jokers.” He nearly spat the words out.

“What are they doing here?” Dana nearly whimpered.

“Looking for a laugh.” Max said matter-of-factly. “What else?”

Michael studied the Jokers and stood next to Kitt. “Are they dangerous, pal?”

Dana nearly whimpered. “They killed Terry’s dad.”

Max shifted, but kept silent.

“Look, Max, you get her out of here and I’ll distract them.” Kitt said. He glanced at Michael. “Cover them.”

“I’m not leaving you alone with them...” He stopped at Kitt’s look. “Fine, then I’m coming back.”

Kitt nodded. Michael grabbed Dana’s shoulders gently and started to lead her away. Max hesitated. “Kitt... come with us.”

He looked around at the half panicked crowd. “No. There are to many people here. If I can hold their attention long enough, Michael can call the proper authorities.”

“But...”

“Please. I don’t want to see you get hurt, Max.”

She nodded and followed Michael. Kitt advanced slowly towards the Jokers.

“Hey, you!” One of them said coolly. “Want to hear a joke?”

“Do I have a choice?” Kitt asked.

“No.”

“All right... let’s have it.”

The Joker smiled. “What’s small round has four points and can be eaten?”

“I have no idea.” Kitt replied dryly.

“It’s a knuckle sandwich!” The Joker shouted. He pulled his fist back and punched. Kitt ducked easily away. It wouldn’t have hurt him much, the joker’s bones were no match for Kitt’s steel jaw.

“Funny, I found no humor in that joke.” Kitt said as he leaned back to a proper upright position. The Joker snarled.

“Hey, Binker, he’s not playing nice!” Another Joker said in a whine. “What should we do?”

A third held up a chain. “Lets see if he’s ticklish.”

All at once they were on Kitt. He was able to keep them from hitting his head or face, which would have both crushed their hands and quite possibly given him away. But this gave then somewhat of an advantage. Kitt couldn’t fight them all back without fear of getting a hit. So all he could do was duck. He heard Michael call out to him. Silently he begged Michael to stay away. But Michael came anyway.

One of the Jokers saw him coming and rolled a ball towards Michael. It stopped under his feet and burst. Green gas engulfed him and he started to choke.

“Michael!” Kitt shouted. He tried to get some of the Jokers off of his back, but more had arrived. He could hear Max screaming, Dana was crying and Michael dropped to the ground. Kitt felt helpless. He knew that eventually one of the Jokers would decide to attack Michael. Kitt closed his eyes...

POW!!!!!

The Jokers scattered, but not to far.

Kitt opened his eyes and looked up. A dark young man in a black outfit was standing over him. On his chest was a red patch with a black bat design. Kitt’s jaw dropped.

“You OK?” Batman asked.

Kitt jumped to his feet. “I’m fine.” He turned to the Jokers and glared. “What sort of gas do they use in there bombs?”

Batman glanced at Kitt. Different kinds. What color was it?”

“Green.”

“It’s not deadly. Get the man out of here. I can handle them.”

Kitt nodded and ran over to Michael. “Michael, talk to me!”

“Kitt?”

The sounds of a fight started up behind Kitt. He glanced back and found himself amazed at what Batman could do. He turned back to Michael and helped him to his feet. He made his way over to Dana and Max, keeping his ears on the fight the whole way. Max and Dana both grabbed Michael.

“I’m going back.” Kitt said.

“But they nearly killed you!” Max said hotly. “What kind of fool goes out and takes on a bunch of Jokers?”

Kitt twisted and pointed to Batman. “That kind.” Without another word he dashed in to the fight. Using whatever he had learned from Michael through the year,s he was able to knock out about seven Jokers, he sent two of them yelping away, and one simply fainted when Kitt picked him up off the ground. After twenty minutes, the fight was over. Batman was leaning against a wall and looking over the mess. Six police officers started running up to them. One older woman was with them. Kitt recognized her as Commissioner Gordon.

“What happened here?” She looked directly at Batman as she spoke.

“Laughing night.” He replied. Then he looked over at Kitt. Gordon followed his gaze.

“Who are you?”

“Kitt.” Kitt replied.

“Kitt who?”

“Kitt...” he faltered.

“Knight.” Michael finished. Kitt turned around and saw him making his way over with Max and Dana’s help.

“And you are?”

“Michael Knight. He’s my... son.”

Kitt blinked and stared at Michael rather blankly.

Gordon looked around the room and sighed. Batman shifted and jumped on to a beam over the room.

“Batman, thank you.” Gordon said, dismissing him with a wave of her hand.

“Any time...” He looked at Kitt. “But I had help tonight, spread your thanks around.” His voice was level; there was very little emotion what so ever.

Kitt only nodded.

Batman, seemingly satisfied, took off into the air and out a high window. Kitt blinked and shook his head. It made him almost sick to watch.

“You helped?” Gordon asked. “With taking out Jokers?”

Max left Michael’s side and joined Kitt. “He was incredible. He took out nearly half of what Batman did!”

Gordon raised an eye brow. “Really?”

She nodded. “You can ask him next time you see him. He did say he had help.”

Gordon studied Kitt. “Thank you, Kitt. But from now on, let the police handle this.”

Kitt opened his mouth, but Michael spoke first. “I’m sorry. It’s my fault. I was a police man once and it must have rubbed off on him.” Michael let go of Dana and walked over to Kitt. He then set his hand on his shoulder. “Sometimes he’s so like me it’s frightening.”

“Well, next time just stay back, OK?”

Michael nodded. “We’ll try. But once a cop, always a cop. Or hero...”

Gordon closed her eyes briefly. She sighed, sounding tied. “Go home, sleep. Stay out of trouble if you can help it.”

“Will do.”

“I’ll watch him.” Max said. She tossed her arm around Kitt’s waist. “I promise.”

<><>*<><>

Devon shook his head and set down the Monday morning paper. The fight was on the front page, Kitt clearly visible. “What were you thinking?”

“They were everywhere, Devon, I couldn’t just stand by and watch...”

Devon shook his head. “I’m not talking about that, Michael... I’m talking about letting Kitt go out and fight.” He sat down across from Michael and rubbed his face. “Listen, I didn’t want to tell you until Kitt was back as to how he was created... but I see this can not wait.” He looked up at Bonnie. “Please sit down. It’s very important.”

She nodded and sat next to Michael. “What is it?”

“The foundation doesn’t own the body Kitt is currently in. We have to return it as soon as this is all over. We can’t afford it and we can’t have it damaged.” He paused. “Michael, Bonnie, I know how you are accepting him as a human. For a short time, I was tempted to do the same. But I can’t. I know that it will only bring heartache and sorrow on us.”

“What about Kitt?” Michael asked. “He’s really starting to like this. Devon, people actually think he’s a human being. The girl Max... she definitely has a crush on him...”

Devon raised his hand and Michael stopped. “We can’t, Michael. The android body is not ours. It must go back.”

Bonnie cleared her throat. “What if we could find the money? Or raise it?”

Michael nodded. “We could try it.”

“I’m afraid you don’t understand. It’s not thousands of dollars we are talking about here... it’s nearly a million. This body is top of the line. Every detail of the human’s outward appearance has been meticulously recreated here. We simply can’t afford the cost.”

“Devon, Kitt needs this.” Michael said slowly. “Doesn’t that matter?”

“No, because it is impossible. I’m sorry, Michael, but Kitt can’t continue like this.”

Michael hung his head. “Why didn’t you tell us?”

“I... I don’t know.” Devon sighed. “I’m sorry.”

“Tell that to Kitt, Devon. He’s the one who is going to be hurt the most.”

“I will, but not now. If we tell him now...”

Bonnie cut in. “He might react badly.”

Devon nodded. “He’s acting himself... but if he were to know, it might change things too much.” Devon thought for a moment. “No matter what, until this case is over, we can’t let him know.”

Michael stood up. “I can’t lie to him!”

“Michael... remember, the chemical Red 13. If we lose it...”

Michael closed his eyes. “Devon, I don’t think this Batman is going to use the chemical on the people. You should have seen him... he was... a real legendary comic book hero.”

Devon fell silent. Bonnie however, stood up next to Michael, knowing he had something on his mind. “What? What are you thinking?”

Michael folded his arms. “I’m not sure, but it’s a hunch.”

“Michael... I trust you. I always have and I always will.” Devon said. “You know that.”

“Yeah... I just hope when this is all over Kitt will still trust me.”

Chapter 4

Candy Coded

“Still at it?”

Kitt looked up at Max and nodded. “Max, what do you know about Nive?”

“Nive the chem. guy with the hot ‘droid women to play with?”

Kitt repressed a flinch. “Yes, that guy.”

“Um... not much.” She sat on the desk next to him. “Why?”

Kitt leaned back and crossed his legs at the ankle. “His corporation seems...”

“Fishy.” Max finished.

Kitt nodded. “I think he’s doing something big and illegal.”

Max light up. “Like what?”

Kitt shrugged. “I’m not sure, but it has something to do with Bio-Tech.” He sat up and started to type again. “Look at this. He bought eight worker drones last week... but only two of them show up on the production floor of his chem. factory.”

Max leaned closer to the screen. “That is odd. What about his chemical production? Still increasing?”

“Yes. So is product rate.”

Max sat at the computer next to him and turned it on. “I’m going to log in to a very restricted part of the web. It’ll help us track sales and finances throughout the last year of every major corporation in Gotham.”

Kitt tilted his head. “How did you get access to it?”

She smiled. “I have my secrets... and you have yours.”

Kitt smiled. “Fair enough.”

They typed on in silence for a minute or two. Then Max stopped. “Kitt, look at this...”

Kitt rose and leaned over her shoulder. “Oh my...”

“He’s got nearly sixty unaccounted for ‘droids in this year alone.” She clicked here and there. Then gasped. “One hundred... two hundred...” She stopped and turned to Kitt. “What would he want them for?”

“I don’t know. But I intend to find out.” He sat back down and started to type again. After an hour he stopped. “I’m sorry... it’s too late. I should go home and do this some more tomorrow.”

Max nodded and sat back. “After you got beaten by the Jokers yesterday, I thought you would at least skipped school for one day.”

Kitt snorted. “And have Mrs. Lanken bawl me out? I’d rather face the Jokers!”

Max laughed. “I hear you.” She then became serious. “Look, if this Nive is hoarding ‘droids, then he could be selling them to people all over the world.. or...”

“Or?”

“Building an army.”

Kitt nodded. “If they were disguised as normal people...”

“They could be blending in and...”

“He could be planning a huge attack!” Kitt stood. “I think you should call Gordon.”

Max nodded. “Batman should know. Let’s both go tell Gordon. She’ll want to talk with you.”

“OK, but I’m driving.”

“No way. I’m driving!”

Kitt shook his head. “I’m driving.”

“My car, my drive.”

Kitt faltered. “OK, fine.”

<><>*<><>

She looked pensive, tense, and down right angry. “Show me.”

Max handed her a printed out report. “Kitt found half of this... the first half. We both filled in the blanks.”

She nodded. “There are still a lot of holes.”

“Tomorrow we will be looking again.” Max said.

“Keep me informed.” She handed the papers back to Max. “And be careful. Nive is the sort of man who is used to getting everything he wants. If he finds out about this...”

Kitt raised his hand. “Please... I already thought about that. He could easily do anything with the ‘droids he has.” He looked over at Max. “We’ll both be very careful.”

“Good.” Gordon said with a nod.

“Someone should tell Batman.” Kitt added.

“I think I can drop a message where he’ll find it.” She smiled. “He’s always snooping as well. I’m surprised he’s missed this. Usually he is the one dropping the line.”

Max laughed quietly. “Always a hero.” She turned to Kitt. “But he’s got a run for his money now.”

Kitt blushed slightly as her eyes bore in to him. “I’m only trying to do what I can.”

Gordon cleared her throat. “Look, both of you should go and relax. It’s been a long two days for you and you should try to minimize stress. Don’t let it show or something could leak. Do you understand? This is too big to be taken lightly.”

“We understand.” Max said. “We’ll act as though nothing has happened.”

“Good. Now get out of my office.”

Max grabbed Kitt’s hand and pulled him to the door. “Good night Commissioner Gordon.”

She nodded and waved them out as she picked up the phone. Max closed the door and sighed. “Relax? How can we relax at a time like this?”

“I don’t know. But she’s right. We need to stay as stress free as possible.”

“Yeah... Hey I know, let’s go for a swim.”

“Swim?” Kitt asked. “I don’t swim.”

“What do you mean don’t swim? You mean you can’t?”

Kitt thought about it for a second. “I’ve never tried.”

Max’s jaw dropped. OK, That’s it... you are coming with me!” She grabbed his hand and pulled him to the elevator.

“Wait... I don’t think I should.”

“Why not?” She stopped and looked at him. “Do you think it’ll kill you?”

Kitt hesitated. “No...”

“Then what are you worried about?”

“Um...”

She rolled her eyes. “Come on.”

<><>*<><>

“Michael, Nive is a reasonable man. He has a stunning record and has contributed to the Gotham community liberally.”

Michael was pacing, thinking. Devon was sitting on the couch, Bonnie was beside him.

“I know. But you didn’t get the pleasure of seeing him face to face. The man’s not a nice guy, Devon. He’s arrogant, powerful and spoiled. And you didn’t meet Batman either. He seemed like a decent guy...”

“Running around in a comic book fantasy.” Devon injected. “I realize this Batman has impressed you, but this just isn’t a normal human we are talking about.”

Michael stopped pacing and turned to Devon. “I know that. Devon, how is my life that much different from a comic book? I drive a car with the mind and soul of a human being inside of it. Is that normal?”

“I see your point.” Devon rubbed his temple. “We need more information. All we can do is wait for Kitt.”

Bonnie glanced at the clock. “Speaking of Kitt, he’s late.”

Michael looked up at the clock and frowned. “Maybe he found something.”

“What if the Jokers went after him?” Bonnie asked, now quite worried. Michael glanced up at the clock again.

“I’m going to call the school.” He walked over to the phone and Bonnie came to hover over him. Devon watched them, feeling like he was looking at parents rather than a team of FLAG.

“Hello, Is Kitt Knight there? Are you sure? When? I see. Thank you...” Michael hung up. “He and Max left an hour ago.”

Devon’s eyes widened. “That doesn’t sound like Kitt at all.”

Michael shook his head. “But then again, Kitt isn’t the same.”

Bonnie hugged herself and bit her lip. “You don’t think he’s in trouble do you?”

“I don’t know Bon, but I think he can handle getting into hot water by himself.”

<><>*<><>

“This water is freezing.” Kitt said as he dipped his fingers into the pool.

“Will that bother you?”

“No.” Kitt stood and flicked the water off of his hand. “But I don’t have...” Max dangled swim trunks in front of him.

“Stop looking for excuses, Mr., or I’ll have to get mean.”

Kitt eyed the trunks. They had every color but black in them. “They sure are bright.”

“All you ever wear is black. Put these on and quit stalling.”

“Changing room?” Kitt asked reluctantly.

Max went blank. “Um... there isn’t one... just the locker.”

“Wonderful. Who builds a pool without a changing room?”

“Vinny. He owns this pool. I always come alone to swim. He said that I could bring friend... but I guess you’re the first.”

Kitt half smiled. “Why me, and how did you get this privilege from Vinny?”

Max shrugged. “Because you’re a nice guy... and Vinny is a nice guy. Now look, I’ll turn my back to you, you turn your back to me, and we’ll change. Deal?”

Kitt nodded. “OK, deal.”

Max smiled and turned around. “So... when you say you never tried to swim do you mean never took lessons, or what?”

“I’ve never been in a pool in my life. That’s the honest truth, Max.”

“Well, there isn’t much for you to know. First lesson is this... No matter what, the only thing that needs to come out of the water is your mouth or nose. Every thing else can be under. If you can breathe, you’ll be fine. And rule number two is never drink the pool water.”

“I think I can handle those two rules.” He finished changing and folded his clothes. “Are you done?”

“Hold on... OK. I’m done.” She turned around and looked Kitt over. Kitt nearly held his breath... she may be able to tell that he was an android, but she simply smiled and took his stuff. “I’ll put this in the locker.”

“Thanks. Devon would be upset if I ruined the new clothes he got me.”

She opened the locker and set them in side. “He got this for you?”

“Yes. Before school. Bonnie, Michael and Devon all bought me things.”

Max shut the locker and turned around. “You’re very lucky to have such a nice family.”

Kitt nodded. “I know.”

She stepped over to the side of the pool and tested the water with her foot. “It’s not bad.” She slid in a moment later and gave a small yelp. “OK... It’s a bit cold.”

Kitt dipped his toe in the water. “What about your family, Max?”

She shrugged. “Not much to tell you. Not much you would probably want to hear.” She submerged for a second and came up with another yelp. “Vinny’s getting a call tomorrow.”

Kitt laughed. “It doesn’t seem that bad.”

“Well you are still not in the pool.” She walked over to him and leaned on the edge. “Get in.”

“I will.”

“Get in now.”

“I will.”

Max grabbed his leg and smiled. “You’re coming in.”

“Max... don’t.”

She sighed and let go. “OK. But at least get on the first step.”

He nodded and got on to the smooth wet step.

“Now the next.”

He stepped down, ankle deep in to the water.

“Keep going.”

“All the way?”

Max shook her head and rolled her eyes. “You can’t swim if you are standing on the steps, Knight.”

Kitt sighed and continued on down. When he reached the pool floor the water was up to his hips. “It is cold.”

Max smiled. “Now let’s try and see if you float.”

“I don’t know...”

Max grabbed him and put her hand on his back. “Lay down, on the water, I can hold you up like this.”

Kitt nodded and did as he was told. Max held him afloat and smiled. “Your not that heavy.”

“This feels odd.”

She nodded. “First float always does. I’m going to let go now. You ready?”

“Yes.”

She slid her hand out from under him. To his relief he stayed afloat. It felt a bit like flying, which Terryfied him in a way, yet he knew he was perfectly safe. “Now what?”

“Now you go under.” She placed her hand on his chest. “Hold your breath.”

“OK.” He took a breath, even though he had no need to, and held it.

“Ready?”

He nodded. She pushed him down and held him for a second. Then she let him back up. He stood up and wiped his hair out of his face. “Thank you.”

“For what?”

“I’ve never done that before. I liked it.”

“I’m glad. And you didn’t struggle. I’m surprised. Most people fight when they are first pushed under.”

“I trust you.” Kitt said frankly. “I know you wouldn’t hurt me.”

“Do you trust Terry or Dana like that?” She asked.

“I’m not sure. Terry has a past. I’m not saying he would want to hurt me... or anyone else, but he dose have a hard streak in him. And Dana may not want to hurt me, but I think she is somewhat impulsive. She may do something she didn’t mean to. But not you; you have a lot of control.”

Max folded her arms and looked at the water’s surface. “Kitt?”

“Yes?”

“Do you think that after all your family’s work is done you could stay in Gotham for a while?”

“I don’t know. I’d like to.” He walked over and sat down on the steps. Max came and sat next to him.

“Do you like working for them?”

Kitt turned and gave her a blank look. “What do you mean?”

“Kitt, I know they are having you look up all of that stuff on the web for them. You are too smart to be just some student at school staying late and looking around. It’s very obvious... at least to me.”

“Yes. I like working with them. I’m sorry I lied to you.”

“Hey, you never said you didn’t work for them.” She splashed him.

Kitt splashed her back. “What about you? You seem to know how to get into everything on the web.”

She smiled. “I like to help people.” She splashed him again.

“So do I.” Kitt stood up and backed away. “It’s my purpose in life.” He splashed her back and turned for the other side of the pool. She dove under the water and passed him. She came up in front of him and grinned.

“Going somewhere, dark Knight?”

Kitt held up his hands to stop the tidal wave of water, but it didn’t help. In a moment they were both splashing each other as hard as they could.

<><>*<><>

Kitt wrung his ear out again and shook his head. “It won’t go away.” They were outside the apartment building. Both were quite soaked.

“It’ll dry overnight.” Max said. “Just try not to think about it.”

“I hope Michael isn’t upset.”

“Come on Kitt, he doesn’t own you. You were just out having some good, clean, fun.”

“Clean. Right. I won’t need to shower tomorrow.”

“I won’t need to...” She stopped and looked up. Her face turned serious. Kitt followed her gaze. A tall dark figure was on one of the balconies, watching them. He sprouted wings and glided down next to them.

“Batman.” Max said with a nod.

“Your apartment is bugged. Miles and Barstow’s as well. Nive planted the bugs. Gordon dropped a line and told me what you found. Don’t say anything about it in there.”

Kitt nodded.

“Can the bugs be removed?” Max asked.

“No. Then Nive would be suspicious. Leave them alone and talk outside of the apartments. Make sure you are in a secure place, like the park, or the mall.”

Kitt nodded again. “May I ask you something?”

Batman gave one nod.

“Why did you log in to Nive’s business through the school?”

Batman glanced at Max, then back at Kitt. “I use a lot of computers. Wherever and whenever I can.”

Kitt nodded. “I understand. Thank you.”

“Oh, and one more thing, your old man is ticked of. You should remember to call before you disappear. You never know what could happen.”

“Thank you, I will.”

Batman nodded again and took off.

“Do you want me to come in with you?” Max asked.

“No.”

“But both of us taking the rap is better than one. Besides, I have an idea how to warn them. Before you have to wait until you are outside again.”

Kitt sighed. “OK. Come in.”

<><>*<><>

Kitt came in and spotted Devon first. He could sense a ‘do you know how much it would cost if you were damaged’ rant, so he quickly pulled Max in and shut the door. Devon cooled and gave the floor to Michael, who just looked worried.

“Kitt...”

“I’m sorry, Michael.” Kitt said quietly. “I must have lost track of time.”

“That’s impossible.” Bonnie said. She too, was angry.

Max set down her book bag and pulled out some books. “We went some places after we were done surfing.” She stepped up to Devon and opened one of the books. “Can you help me identify this art piece?”

Devon resisted a scowl and looked. Instead of art the there was a note.

‘Nive bugged the apartments. We found something. Talk outside tomorrow after school.’

Devon glanced at her. “This art is very valuable. It must be worth millions. How did you find it?”

“A little bird (She pointed to a picture of a bat on the page) told me that you liked this sort of thing.” She smiled and shut the book.

Kitt nodded. “I think it’s very clever art.”

Devon nodded. “Indeed.” He turned to Michael. “Michael, I want you to pick Kitt up tomorrow after School. And from now on until we leave for home, Kitt...” He turned back to Kitt. “You are... dripping.”

Kitt cleared his throat. “We went swimming.”

“Swimming?” Michael asked. “You two went swimming?”

Bonnie looked him over. “You can swim?”

“No... But we were in a pool.”

Max walked back to the door and replaced her books to the bag. “Well, It’s late. I should go now.”

“May I keep the art book?” Devon asked. “I think Michael and Bonnie would like to see it.”

She nodded and handed it to him. “The art is on page 121. Where the bookmark is.”

“Thank you. Drive safely.”

She smiled and opened the door. “Good night, Kitt.”

“Good night Max.”

She left. Michael folded his arms. “Swimming?”

“Yes. Swimming!” Kitt folded his arms as well. “This body can do more than type.”

Michael winced. “Look, you could have gotten hurt. You should have called.”

“Michael is right, Kitt.” Bonnie said. “What if the Jokers came after you again?”

Kitt wrung his ear out for the zillionth time. “I just got wet. And Max was with me. And I was with Max. Besides, Bonnie, the Jokers can’t hurt me.”

Michael sighed. “Just call us from now on. We were worried about you.”

“I know. Can I go to bed now? I have a test tomorrow. It’s hard to concentrate next to the thug in math class when I haven’t charged completely.”

Michael nodded. “Fine. Go.”

Kitt grabbed his book bag and tromped off to bed. As he disappeared in to his room he looked back at Devon. Devon nodded. “Good night, Kitt.” Devon turned to Michael. “Come look at this art. It’s quite good.”

<><>*<><>

“Well?” Max asked as Kitt sat down in the computer chair next to her. “How did they react?”

“It worried them, but they still trust me.” He smiled. “And they trust you now. Completely.”

Max smiled. “Nive doesn’t stand a chance.”

“I wouldn’t say that, but at least we are a step ahead of him now.” Kitt started to type and was soon lost in his own thoughts. He was pulled out of them when Max touched his shoulder.

“Kitt?”

He turned to her. “Yes?”

“When you leave, will you keep in touch with me?”

“Yes. I will. You’re a very good friend.”

“Maybe I can come and see you in LA.”

Kitt looked down and shook his head. “I don’t think that would work.”

“Why not?”

“I... travel a lot, from place to place.” He looked up at her sadly. “I’m sorry, but you can’t.”

She frowned. “If you think I can’t handle danger...”

“It’s not that. Max, I can’t give you all the details, but I know it would be impossible for you to see me again after I return home. I can send you E-mail, and you to me. But that is all we can do.”

She sighed and rested her head on his shoulder. “If I were anyone else I’d ask why, or get angry... but I understand.”

“Do you?”

She nodded against him. “You heroes come and go. Like a wind. No one knows where you came from, no one knows where you will end up.” She sighed.

“I’m so sorry.”

“Don’t. You are a wonderful person, Kitt. I’d be selfish if I asked you to stay here with me.” She sat up and looked at him. “Kitt, just don’t ever change.”

“Change?”

“Who you are. You are a wonderful person. Don’t ever stop trying to help people.”

He smiled. “I won’t.”

His computer beeped and they both looked over at it. A message was flashing. It had a bat symbol on it. Max opened it. “It’s a link.”

“Follow it.”

She clicked on it and a page full of numbers and letters appeared. “It’s a code.”

Kitt came closer and started to scroll down. “Candy.”

“Pardon me?”

“It’s Candy’s code.” His face darkened.

“What is...”

“Shh!” He continued until he reached the bottom. When he did he closed his eyes and sat down. His expression was controlled anger.

“What is it?”

“Bio-Tech has codes to keep their androids, whatever shape and size, from hurting people. Candy’s code was custom made. She has only one prime directive.”

Max nodded slowly. “And that is?”

“Obey Nive, at all costs.” Kitt stood and grabbed the phone.

“Who are you calling?”

“Michael. I need him to come pick me up. We’re done here for the day.”

Max started to close the computers down. She watched Kitt for a moment. He was becoming worried looking.

“What is it?”

“Michael’s not home. Neither is Devon.”

“Try Bonnie’s place.”

“I am.... Bonnie?” He sighed. “Where is Michael?”

Max sat down and started to print out the code.

“I see.” He glanced at Max and rolled his eyes.

“What?”

Kitt pulled down the phone. “Michael left to pick me up ten minutes ago. Devon’s with him, but Devon’s out of his tea.”

Max tried not to laugh. “He’s very spoiled.”

Kitt nodded. “Thanks Bonnie. Bye.” He hung up.

“What kind of tea?”

“Green tea.” Kitt sat down and looked at the computer. “All of Nive’s unaccounted for ‘droids could be given the Candy code.”

“Yeah, they could.”

“They could become unstoppable.” Kitt added. Then his eyes widened. “And if they took some of the chemicals...”

Max sat up. “He could wipe out the whole city.”

“No.” Kitt said. “He could wipe out more than just Gotham.” Kitt turned to Max and grabbed her shoulder. “Do you think Batman is thinking this?”

She nodded. “Yes. He’ll be running through all of the possibilities.”

“Who will?” Some one asked. Kitt and Max turned to see Michael. Devon was not far behind him.

“Batman.” Kitt said. He handed Michael the printed out code. “Michael. Nive is framing Batman. He has over two hundred androids hidden somewhere in his factories and this code may have been placed in them.”

Michael looked over the jumble of numbers and letters. “What am I looking at Kitt?”

“Do you remember Nive’s blond ‘droid, Candy?”

Michael nodded, smiling ever so slightly. “Yes. She had two sisters, right?”

Kitt rubbed his head. “Yes, Michael, she had two sisters. But that’s not the point.”

“What is, Kitt?” Devon asked.

“Candy’s code was custom made, by Nive. Bio-Tech has standards, ethics...”

“But Nive does not.” Devon said, interrupting. “And now he has this code and over two hundred ‘droids.”

Max nodded. “And he’s hoarding the chemical Red 13.”

Devon paled a little. He reached in to his coat and pulled out an envelope. “He brought this by this morning. Perhaps you should see this and tell me what you think, Kitt.”

Kitt took the envelope and opened it. There were pictures of Batman in Nive’s factories, holding boxes of the chemical. “It looks like Batman, but I don’t think it is.”

“Nor I.” Devon said.

“He’s going to blame Batman?” Max asked.

“For the missing chemicals, yes.” Michael said. “After that it’s hard to say what he will do.”

“How much of Red 13 is missing?” Kitt asked.

“Four gallons, Kitt.” Michael replied.

Kitt closed his eyes. “The chemical only has a shelf life of three weeks. It’s used for sterilization of surgical instruments and after being exposed to the air for about an hour it breaks down. But during that hour, it can kill any thing organic. He could put it into the air ducts of buildings, release it on planes... and only the ‘droids will remain.” Kitt opened his eyes. “Four gallons could be enough to wipe out half of the population in the US, Michael. After that, it would be easy to deploy his small army and take over the US.”

“Or he could use it to take out a small country with nuclear warheads hidden within.” A smooth, deep, voice said calmly. A shimmer solidified in to Batman.

Everyone in the room, save Max, seemed startled. Batman seemed slightly pleased. “I guess the message went through all right then?”

Kitt stood and nodded. “What country?”

“Does it matter?” Batman asked. “Any atomically armed country will do. Once he has that sort of power, why stop at one country?”

Devon shuddered. “How dreadful.”

Batman nodded. “Our computer matrix took weeks to find even a trace of Nive’s on-line work. I don’t know how you were able to find what you did. The only thing the matrix could manage was the code. But he had a legal permit for it. It was suspected that he was doing something big, but what it was, it was beyond what the matrix could uncover.”

Kitt smiled. “Your matrix hides well, but it risks to much to search actively. I’m just a...” He paused. “Concerned person willing to help.”

Batman looked into him with a near blank look. “That’s not what the FLAG file told me.”

Devon sat down. “You managed to find FLAGnet?”

Batman nodded. “It wasn’t hard. I just piggy-backed off of Kitt’s call sign.”

Devon rubbed his cheek, “How much do you know?”

Batman folded his arms. “Only what I need to. I’m not for using secrets against anyone who upholds the law.” He turned and looked at Michael. “I have a feeling we are both working for the same justice.”

Michael nodded. “It seems that way. So what is our next step?”

Batman thought for a second. “Combined we don’t have the fire power needed to defeat the androids in a battle. But with Kitt’s skill we could try and reprogram them.”

Kitt shook his head. “I can’t get past the trips in the system. It’s far more advanced than anything I have ever encountered. In time I may be able to. But...”

“But we’re running out of time.” Michael finished. “Kitt, get me a layout of all the buildings owned by Nive. I want to know every place he could hide an android. I don’t want any surprises.”

Kitt turned to the computer. “Right away Michael.”

Max sighed and turned to Michael. “What about me?”

“You stay out of this.” Batman said. “It’s far too...”

“You can help Kitt like you have been.” Devon cut in. “Right now, he needs you to keep him looking normal.”

Batman shut his mouth.

“He needs you to help him blend in. To not look like he is hiding something.” Devon continued. “It would be the best thing you could do for him, my dear.”

Max smiled. “He does stand out.”

“Only in a crowd.” Kitt mumbled through his typing. “I have it, Michael. But some of the floors can not be accessed.” He turned to his partner. “I’m sorry.”

Michael shrugged. “Don’t be, pal. Better than I could do.”

Batman leaned over Kitt’s shoulder. “The Bat Matrix couldn’t hack it...”

Kitt smiled. “Normal computers are not enough. This has advanced AI. I’m and AI expert.”

Batman nodded. “That was obvious. It was in your bio. Seems that they were right.” He turned to Devon. “If I download these in to the Bat-wing I can scout out the missing floors and do a head count of the ‘droids.”

“Give Kitt the upload link.”

Batman pulled something from his bat-suit and handed it to Kitt. “This has the uplinks only.”

Kitt took it and inserted it in to the computer. “All right... done.” He pulled it out and handed it back. “I’m impressed. You vehicle is equipped with some amazing technology.”

Batman shrugged. It was somewhat restricted by the suit, but still visible. “Most of it is street sold. It’s cheaper that way. The only really high-tech stuff is the programs and some of the sensors and alloys.”

Kitt turned to Devon. “I know some FLAG vehicles that could use an upgrade.”

Devon’s brow creased. “Kitt!”

Michael laughed. “Later pal, we’ll talk about it later. Right now we need to figure out how to take this guy down.”

“We could sabotage the ‘droids.” Max offered.

Kitt shook his head. “They are all hooked up to a large network. If even one is tampered with, the others will sound the alarm.”

“What about a virus?” Michael asked.

“It could work.” Kitt said slowly. “But it would have to be injected directly in to the ‘droid. Not through the net. There are too many firewalls.”

“I can do it.” Batman said. “But I will need Kitt’s help.”

Max smiled and tossed her arm around Kitt. “We’ll help.”

“Fine. But you stay out of the way and out of sight.”

Max crossed her hart. “Wouldn’t dream of ticking off an android.”

Kitt pulled her arm off and turned back to the computer. “When do we go?”

“I’ll scout the area first.” He picked up the photos. “If I’m spotted by Nive then you can just fall back on this. After I scout the locations I’ll check back with you. I’ll send you a message, Kitt.”

Kitt nodded. “I understand.”

Chapter 5

Being Normal

“Kitt, get up pal!” Michael called.

Kitt mumbled something about inappropriate sleeping habits and pulled the blanket over his head.

“KITT!” He yelled again.

Kitt rolled over and pulled the pillow over his head.

“Kitt.” Bonnie called. “Don’t make us come in there!”

Kitt sighed. “I’m coming.” He called. He shifted and pulled the charger out of his arm. It had been two days sense the meeting with Batman and there had been no news. Michael had reminded him of the saying ‘no news is good news.’ But Kitt had thought it rather annoying.

He got out of the bed and scanned for his clothes. Normally his room was clean, neat and orderly. But the night before, he had been too drained to clean up. Max had given him another swimming lesson. Michael and Devon had come along and they had talked over the plan at the pool. Bonnie had come a while after that. Michael persuaded her to get in the pool if he would. The rest of the night had been one big water fight. And, with the exception of Devon, who was trying to read a book, everyone finally climbed out, exhausted. Devon, though not part of the pool party, could not escape getting wet. Michael had made sure of that. Devon had been annoyed, but took it in good humor.

Kitt smiled briefly at the memory of the night before as he found his jeans. When he was dressed, he exited his room and nearly bumped into Devon.

“Morning Kitt.” Devon said briskly. “I was just about to come and see if you were awake.”

“I am awake.” He looked around. “Where is Michael?”

“He is in the Kitchen... attempting to make pancakes.”

Both Devon and Kitt glanced at the kitchen with weary eyes.

Kitt looked at the wall clock. “I’m late for school. Max and I have to work on an assignment for art together before class.”

Devon raised his eyebrow. “Kitt, what kind of art are you doing?”

Kitt grimaced. “Drawing. Devon, I’m a computer, I have no artistic ability.”

Devon smiled slightly. “I’m sure Max will have enough for both of you.”

Kitt sighed. “I hope so.” He looked at the smoke coming from the kitchen door. “Do you think ...”

“No.”

“Not even if...”

“No.” Devon placed his had on Kitt’s shoulder and walked him to the door. “I’ll take care of them.”

Kitt nodded and picked up his book bag. “You sure I shouldn’t...”

Devon shook his head. “See you after class.”

Kitt nodded. In the background they could hear Michael and Bonnie trying to tell each other what went wrong. Kitt rolled his eyes and opened the door. “At least I don’t have to eat.”

Devon huffed. “Lucky you.”

<><>*<><>

Kitt scanned the steps quickly and sighed. Already he could tell this would be a long day. The resident bully was punching the life out of a nerd, one of the jocks was trying to get a group of girls’ attention, and some of the brains were trying not to look smart while in the view of the bully. Despite the skyscrapers, the sun was illuminating the steps, showing every teen present. Kitt reminded himself that this was all part of the case, and continued towards the building. He was almost there, when Max came running up to him.

“Hey... Knight... hold up!” He stopped and waited for her to catch her breath. “Got an idea for the art yet?” She managed.

“I don’t do art.” Kitt replied calmly. “I’m in to codes, numbers and constants. Not art.”

She smirked and came closer to him. “Come on. We have to go with this. Be normal, remember?”

Kitt nodded. “But... I have never done art before.”

Max raised an eyebrow. “Every kid on Earth has picked up a crayon once.”

Kitt shook his head.

“Fine...” She grabbed his arm and pulled him to one side. “Look, Kitt, art is fun, easy and very shway if you can make it look convincing.” She opened up her folder and pulled out some paper. “See this? While you were code tracing, I was drawing this for our grade. It’s the only thing I could see you doing. The theme is we both draw some things from our lives that make up who we are, then we past them to a big piece of art board and write a poem or something next to it. Got it?”

Kitt nodded. “It sounds simple enough.”

“It is.” She shoved the paper in to his hand and leaned closer. “Any word from the bat?”

“No. But Devon said that he would have to take his time. It could be a week. The security is tight.”

She nodded. “But he’s got it good with all of his toys.”

The school bell rang and every one started to file into the school. As Max And Kitt were entering, Terry pulled Max to the side.

“Hey, want to go to the video arcade after school? Dana and I are going. The big guy said I could take the night off.”

Max smiled. “Only if Kitt can come.”

Terry nodded. “How about it, Knight. You in?”

“I’m not sure.” Kitt replied plainly. “I would have to OK it with Michael first.”

“That’s shway.” Terry said. “I hope you can make it.”

Kitt nodded.

<><>*<><>

All through art class, Kitt doodled and sketched. With his mechanical capabilities he made everything perfectly life-like. But even he could see that it was rigid and unfeeling. Finally, he stopped and looked up at Max. “I’m not going to get it.”

Max looked at his sketches and her eyes widened. “Kitt... where did you learn to draw like that?”

“The computer.” He replied honestly.

“Wow. Look, just ... blend the sketches in to... something...” She sighed. “Make it personal. Put your heart in to it. Draw something that you like.” She picked up one of Michael. “He must really mean some thing to you.”

Kitt glanced at the paper. “Yes. He’s everything to me.”

“Kitt, use that. Use objects and people that mean something to you. Draw the people doing things that you like. It’s all about your perspective on the world.”

Kitt nodded. “I’ll try.”

“Good.” She handed the paper back and went to her own project. Kitt took the sketches and thought for awhile. Then he started to draw again.

“When is this due?”

“Next week.”

“Will you be done by then?”

She smiled. “I hope so. You?”

“Of course.”

<><>*<><>

Kitt hung up the phone. After a long talk, Michael had finally convinced Devon and Bonnie to let Kitt go with Terry, Max and Dana. Max was standing next to him, arms folded, and leaning against the wall.

“Well?”

“I can go.” Kitt smiled slightly. “In all honesty, I thought I wouldn’t be able to.”

“Why not?”

Kitt turned to her and smiled. “A thousand little things, Max. But Michael was able to talk Devon and Bonnie in to it.”

Max grabbed his arm. “Well, then what’s the hold up? Let’s go.”

<><>*<><>

Kitt was doomed. So doomed. Five rounds of DBZ boxing had left him battered and bruised. And now Max was standing over him in virtual reality, ready to kill him.

“You don’t think you’ll be nice and give me a second to think this one out, will you?” He asked, forcing hopefulness in to his voice.

“Ummm, NAHH!” She blasted him good and sent his virtual self to the next dimension.

Kitt pulled the VR gear off and ran his fingers through his hair. “How did you learn to fight like that?”

“From living in Gotham.” She stepped off the platform and walked over to a booth. Kitt joined her.

“Really? Michael sometimes has to fight his ways out of a situation and I have a feeling he would be hard pressed to win against you.”

“Sometimes people here have to be tough, Kitt. It comes with the city.”

Kitt frowned. “Have you ever been hurt?”

She nodded. “Just last week I got knocked down by Terry in the samurai warrior simulator...”

“I mean in real life Max.”

She sighed. “Sure, we all have.” She grabbed his hand. “But that was before the bat came back.”

Kitt smiled a bit. “The bat came back. Reminds me of a song.”

Max laughed. “Next time we see him we’ll tell him.”

“Tell him what?” Max and Kitt turned to see Dana and Terry next to them. Dana had spoken.

“Kitt and I just realized something. Every bad guy in the city was having a fine time until the bat came back. Try as they might, he wouldn’t go away. The bat came back the very next day.”

Terry smirked. “Very funny.”

“I thought so.” Max said with a big grin. Terry rolled his eyes.

“So Kitt, how’s swimming?” Dana asked with a smile. “Max told me that you are taking lessons from her.”

“I am. I’m doing well I guess.”

Max smiled. “He’s doing really good. For someone who claims to have never been in a pool he’s learning very fast.”

Terry looked at Kitt and smiled. “Never been in a pool huh? So what are you at home? Chained to the building?”

Dana smacked him in the head. “TERRY MCGUINESS!”

Kitt chuckled. “Something like that. But I’m not chained, just too busy.”

“Too busy to swim? That’s a real shame.” Dana sighed. “Well, who wants to play some games?”

Kitt whipped his head around and glared at Max. “I’ve played enough games today, thank you.”

Max laughed. “Nobody beats the master!” She folded her hands together and bowed.

“You beat Kitt?” Terry asked. “After he fought off all of the Jokers?”

Max bowed again. “Yes. I fight better than a clown.”

“Oui... Max sama! You are tough!” Dana exclaimed and bowed to her.

Terry rolled his eyes. “Right.” He sat down next to Kitt and sighed. “Girls...”

Dana smacked him again. “Terry’s right, though. How do you lose to Max and win against all of those Jokers?”

Terry cleared his throat. “Now your being to nosy, Miss. Dana.”

“Well, you hit a Joker and hope to hurt them. You hit Max and hope she doesn’t kill you.” Kitt replied. He picked up a saltshaker and toyed with it. “Besides, Max is in better shape then the Jokers.”

“Thank you.” Max said with a grin.

A buzzer rang and Kitt looked up. “What was that?”

“That means that the pizza is done.” Max said. “You’re eating the Pizza, Kitt.”

“I can’t.” Kitt protested.

“Why not?” Dana asked. “That diet of yours?”

“Yes. Cheese is really not good for my systems.”

“Why don’t you two go ahead and we’ll wait here.” Terry cut in. Kitt glanced at him.

“Fine. Making the women do all the work for you. That big guy should work some manners in to you, McGuiness.” Max snorted. She and Dana left. Kitt shifted and set the salt aside.

“Hey.” Terry nearly grunted.

“What?”

“Just what’s your deal any way?”

Kitt sighed. “I’m working for some people...”

“No, I mean with Max.”

Kitt’s eyes widened. “What do you mean?”

Terry turned to him and leaned back on the counter. “I mean what’s with you and Max? You spend a lot of time with her... and she clearly likes you... more than she has like anyone else... So what’s with you? Do you like her?”

Kitt thought for a moment. “Look, I’m just here for a month or so. I have no intentions of starting anything in that way. I’m here on a job, not for romance.”

“So you don’t feel anything for her then, huh?”

“I do... but not like that. I mean, she’s a wonderful person, and really good at computers, but I don’t think I feel anything beyond a comfortable friendship.”

Terry glanced over at where the girls were waiting in line for the pizza. “Then tell her that, Kitt. I don’t know about you, but some of us can tell when one is interested in more than just being friends.”

Kitt sighed and rested his head in one hand. “Humans are too complicated.”

“That’s why I like fish as pets.” Terry said with a small smile. “Anyway, I care about Max and I just don’t want to see her feelings get stepped on. She’s had it rough all her life and I only want good for her.”

Kitt smiled. “You’re a good person, McGuiness.”

“I try. But I’m only good to people who don’t play clowns.”

Kitt glanced up at him. He was angry looking, as if he was recalling something. “Your dad was murdered by them, right?”

Terry looked Kitt in the eyes. “My father was killed by very evil people. Does it matter what they call themselves?”

Kitt turned a way. “No.” He thought back to the fight with the Jokers and recalled when Michael was engulfed in the green gas. “Michael was in that Joker fight too.”

“I know.” Terry frowned at the counter top. “Your old man is a great guy.”

Kitt smiled and nodded. “He’s the best person in my life. No matter what, I’m not going to let anyone take him from me.”

Terry snorted. “Don’t be foolish, Kitt. People die everyday. I never thought I would lose my dad. And I did. If I had been there... But I wasn’t. I wasn’t there. That’s when they came. When I wasn’t there.”

Kitt frowned. He shifted and glanced over at Terry. “Michael knows how to take care of himself.”

“My dad did too.” Terry said dryly. “Now he’s dead. People die. Everyone dies. But he shouldn’t have. Not then. It’s not fair.”

<><>*<><>

Kitt climbed out of the car and glanced at Max. “Thanks for the ride. See you later.”

She nodded. “Just what did Terry say to you? Ever since we left you alone with him, you seemed to be down.”

“I’m fine. I’m exhausted, though. I’ll see you later, Max.” He shut the door as she was going to ask him something else and started to walk away. She climbed out on her side and ran up to him.

“Kitt! What is with you?”

Kitt bit his lower lip. “Max, please just let it go.”

“No way. Kitt... come on, this isn’t like you.”

Kitt felt the frustration swell inside of him. “Max. Leave me alone.” He knew it would make her angry... but Terry was right. He had to stop her from thinking about him in the way she was. He wasn’t human... she didn’t need the let down.

She looked into his eyes and frowned. “Kitt. Did I do something wrong?”

He sighed. The wind was picking up and his hair was getting in his eyes. He attempted to smooth it back. “No. Not you.”

“Then what is it?”

Kitt lowered his eyebrows and gave her a darker expression. “Max. Go home.” Without waiting to see her reaction, he spun on his heel and entered the building. Once inside he glanced out the window. She was standing there still, looking hurt. He sighed and went upstairs.

Chapter 6

News

Kitt nearly slammed the door and yanked his shoe off. Michael glanced up at him from the couch, startled. “Should I ask if you had a good time?”

Kitt glared at him. “Humans are screwed up, Michael.” He nearly hissed as he yanked off his other shoe.

Michael was taken back. “Whoa, pal. What’s with you?”

Kitt picked up both shoes and tossed them into the shoebox. “Nothing.”

“OK... If you were organic I’d blame all of this on hormones. But your not, so what is the matter?”

Kitt shot a very nasty look at Michael, and then turned away. He stood for a moment, silent, and tense. “Why do people have to do these things?”

“Do what?”

“Kill each other, hurt each other...” Kitt let his shoulders drop.

Michael braced himself. He never thought he would be having one of these kind of talks with Kitt. “OK. Put your shoes back on, pal, were going for a walk.”

Kitt sighed and did as he was told.

<><>*<><>

Kitt and Michael walked silently for about ten minutes before Michael stopped and looked out over Gotham Bay. “So, buddy, who said what and why are you letting it affect you?”

Kitt slumped down on a bench and sighed. “Terry’s dad is dead. And Max thinks I’m human.”

Michael sat next to him. “Old story and I’m glad to hear it.”

“But Terry could have helped him. He could have stopped it. But he wasn’t there.”

“Kitt. We don’t know if he could have stopped it.”

“But still... What if the Jokers come after you and Bonnie? What if Nive goes after you? What if I’m not there?” Kitt dropped his head. “Even if I am there, I can’t be sure I could stop Nive from...” He stopped and looked up. “Michael, I don’t want you to die. At least I don’t want you to die before you should. Still I don’t want to see it. I don’t want to know when you die.”

Michael was silent for a long time. Finally, he grabbed Kitt’s chin and forced Kitt to look in to his eyes. “Look, Kitt, nothing is going to happen.”

“It might.”

“OK... you’re right. It might. But I have a lot more faith in you then that. If I die then I die. But I know you’ll do your best not to let that happen.”

“Don’t say that.”

“I’m going to say it, Kitt, death is human.”

“But I can’t take it. I don’t think I could stand to see you killed. No matter how hard I tried, I don’t think I could accept it.”

“This may surprise you, but I feel the same way. If something happened to you when I wasn’t there...” Michael glanced down at him. “You are more than a talking car to me, Kitt. Even before you were in this form, you were human.”

“Human. I feel like I’m lying to everyone. Especially Max.”

“Now, what’s all this about Max?”

Kitt sighed again. “Working with her this close isn’t fair to her. She thinks I’m human... she... she likes me...”

“Oh. That. Yeah, Devon and I noticed. Actually Bonnie had to point it out to us, but that isn’t the point.”

“I don’t want to hurt her, Michael.”

“Hard one. I’m going to offer you the best advice I can right now, pal. Ask Bonnie.”

Kitt nodded. “Michael?”

“Yes?”

“What happens when I get changed back?”

“I don’t know, buddy. I really don’t know.”

Kitt picked up a rock and tossed it into the salty water. “I’m a car.” He tossed another one. “But... I like this too.”

“Let’s go home, pal. If you don’t need a charge, then I do.”

<><>*<><>

Michael froze. A shadow loomed over him and Kitt. Kitt stopped walking and looked up. Batman was in the air, waving for them to follow him. Kitt swallowed and looked away. How anyone could fly around like that was beyond him.

When they reached where Batman was waiting for them, the dark figure pulled out a piece of paper and handed it to Kitt. “I’m glad you were out of the house. I thought I might have to wait until you were alone at the school tomorrow.”

“We needed to have a talk.” Michael explained. Kitt was too busy looking over the paper to add in his comment. Suddenly his eyes widened.

“Where is this place?”

“Harbor Street. Big warehouse.”

“So they are all there?” Kitt asked, handing the paper back to him.

Batman put it back in to his belt. “No, that’s just half.”

“Half?” Kitt yelped. “But that’s nearly a thousand.”

“It gets better.” Batman said darkly. “They all have the Candy code, just like you thought. But they don’t have her spunky attitude.”

“What’s our next move?” Michael asked.

“First of all, we make sure Nive has no clue that we know. So for now, I need you two to talk as if you hate me when you’re in the bugged apartments.”

“I have never had anyone ask me to do that before.” Michael mused.

Kitt gave a faint smile. “I have to admit... that may be hard for me to do. I don’t like to lie to people.”

Batman smiled back. “Sounds ridiculous... but I feel the same way.”

Michael looked back and forth between the two of them. It occurred to him that Batman could be near Kitt’s supposed age. “Excuse me, Batman, but you know a lot about us...”

“Do you trust me?” Batman cut him off.

Michael nodded. “Yeah, but...”

In a flash Batman was gone. Kitt followed his movements for a moment, and then ignored him. Batman’s voice filtered through the air. “No offense, but I can’t give anything away. I know it sounds harsh, but my secrets aren’t just protecting me.”

“We understand.” Kitt said with a nod. “The same goes for us.”

<><>*<><>

Kitt sat down near the door and sighed. Lunchtime. Dana walked passed him and gave him the cold shoulder. Max wouldn’t even look at him. He sighed. Terry brushed past the two girls and sat down next to Kitt. “Tried to tell her off huh?”

“Yes. I feel as if I should be doing something right... but I don’t.”

“It’s hard trying to not hurt a girl’s feelings and at the sametime try to not hurt a girl’s feelings.”

“Understood.” Kitt sighed. “Ter?”

“Yeah?”

“What do you make of the Batman?”

Terry smirked. “The guy is a nut case. Total nut case.” He grinned. “Cool toys though.”

Kitt nodded. “Could use stuff like that back in LA.”

“Could use stuff like that here. I’d like to see Batman take a punch at some of the bullies here.”

Kitt laughed. “Yeah. That would be a sight. But I doubt Batman would want to deal with such trivial punks.”

Terry shrugged. “It could happen.”

“Yeah... maybe. Look, I need to go talk to Max. Any advice?”

“If she punches you just remember, it’s not nice to hit girls back.”

“I’ll remember that.” Kitt stood up and quickly scanned for Max. He spotted her on the other side of the room. This wouldn’t be easy if he recalled all of Michael’s screw-ups. But Kitt had back up... sort of. He had to tell her about what Batman had found. “Wish me luck?” Kitt asked hopefully.

“I’ll do better than that... I’ll get the paramedics on speed dial.”

Kitt grimaced. “Good idea.” Kitt took a deep breath and walked over. Max glared at him, but didn’t run away. Instead she stood up and walked up to him.

“What ever your going to say to me, Knight, save it.”

“Over two thousand.”

She glared puzzled. “What?”

“‘Droids.” He whispered, and walked past her. “Thought you would like to know.” He tossed back over his shoulder. She gazed after him.

“Hold on Knight...fill me out on that.” She grabbed her lunch and darted off after him.

<><>*<><>

Kitt gazed over the school’s art wall as he leaned over the second story handrail. With luck, his art would be there soon. ‘OK... more than luck...’ He mused.

“How many exactly?”

“Two thousand and four. Exactly. That’s if you don’t count the toy triplets he has with him.”

She folded her arms and leaned back over the rail. “This will be tough. What else did Batman say?”

“We wait. We watch.”

“He said that?”

Kitt shook his head. “No. But that’s what we do now. We need to have an air tight plan.” He glanced at her. “I want you to understand something, Max, we won’t work.”

“What do you mean?”

“I mean... I meant what I said when I said that...”

She raised her hand. “Stop, Kitt.” She sighed and looked down at the art board. “I think I know what you are going to say. You’re going to leave, go back to your sheltered world...”

“My world is anything but sheltered, Max. I face danger every day. Michael has nearly been killed several times. See... it’s my job to keep him safe.”

“How?”

“In any, and every, way I can.” He glanced down at her. “I can’t have anyone in my life but him, and Dr. Barstow. She puts both of us back together when the pieces fall apart. And Devon runs the show.”

“Once a cop, always a cop. Right?”

Kitt nodded. “If things were different... if I was a normal human like everyone else...” He let the sentence hang and closed his eyes. ‘If I wasn’t a machine.’ He added in his mind. To his surprise he felt Max’s arms wrap around him.

“Kitt... Who protects you?”

He sighed and returned the embrace. “They do. I have nearly been terminated many times. They always pull me through. I owe my life to them. It was my father’s dream. He was a very good man.”

“I know... I can tell.”

<><>*<><>

“Michael?”

“Yeah pal?”

“Max wants to know if we can all go over to her house and eat dinner there. She made a special dinner just for us.”

Michael thought about it for a moment. “So you two made up?”

“Yes, we did. I think we should really go over there.” He stressed the importance as much as he could. It had been a long evening at the school and they had found some thing big.

“Any one else coming?”

“Um...” Kitt scrambled over and over to find a way to tell Michael who was going to be there. All he could come up with was, “Yeah... some friends we made the other day.”

Michael nodded. “I’ll tell Bonnie and Devon.”

Chapter 7

Black Spandex

Batman picked up a fork and examined it with his microscopic vision. “Max, your dishwasher isn’t getting all the soap off.”

She swiped her fork back and snorted. Kitt smiled. Devon cleared his throat.

“So, Batman, what are we all doing here?”

Batman sat down at the table, this was a dinner occasion after all, and picked up his own fork. “First of all.” He said firmly. “I already ate. Second, we need to plan something.”

“That was a given.” Gordon said dryly.

Devon took a bite of some bread and thought for a moment. “If we could come up with a force large enough to outnumber the ‘droids Nive owns, then we could take out that part of the threat, no problem.”

“I think Batman and I can arrange that.” Gordon said with a nod. “It will take sometime. But it can be done.”

“Kitt and I can program them.” Bonnie offered.

“And Devon and I can find Red-13.” Michael added.

“What about me?” Max asked.

“You, my dear, are coming with Michael and I. We’ll need some one who can work a computer as well.” Devon said with a nod.

“Great. I’m ready when you are.” She said, grinning.

“Not so fast, Max.” Batman said. “This is too risky.”

Kitt sighed. “He’s right.”

“Hey, if Devon says she can do it, then I believe him.” Michael injected.

Kitt turned to him. “Michael... this isn’t a small army of men. These are robots that can kill people. I don’t doubt Max could help with the computers and finding the Red-13. I do however, think that it’s too risky for her.” Kitt turned to Bonnie. “You too.”

Bonnie folded her arms. “Kitt, I have no intention of fighting with an android.” She looked him straight in the eye. “I will however reprogram one if I have too.”

Kitt turned away and looked at Batman for help. The masked figure sighed and stood up.

“Here is how we do this. Gordon and I will get the ‘droids. I know someone who can reprogram them... But I want Kitt to help me. Only Kitt. Kitt, Michael and I will then go and find the chemicals. Max, your job is to keep Bonnie and Devon safe.”

Devon stood up and glared at Batman. “Now just hold on! Who gave you the right to make all the plans?”

“My city, old man. My plans. Besides, one on one with an android is part of my warm-up in the morning. It’s how I keep in shape. I think Kitt could handle himself all right. And Michael is smart as well as in good shape. But you are too old, too slow.”

Devon was about to give Batman a piece of his mind when Gordon stood up and cleared her throat. “Mr. Miles, he’s right. What chance do we have against robots at our age?” She reached over and took his hand. “Please, no deaths in this city. Not without thinking clearly first.”

Devon calmed and sat back down. “I won’t do anything.”

“Help me.” Gordon continued. “You can help me with the legal stuff. We need to find a way to back ourselves up if our own ‘droids fail.”

“Of course. How foolish of me.”

Kitt sighed. Devon was safe. “Batman... just you and I.”

Michael turned to Kitt. “Hey, were a team, remember?”

“I remember. But the only way we can stay a team is if we both survive. I don’t want to be the soul survivor.”

“He’s right. Kitt and I should go alone into Nive’s buildings.”

Max glanced over at Kitt. “He can’t fend off ‘droids!” He’s only human!”

Batman smiled slightly. “I’m only human, Max. He’ll be fine. Trust me.”

She glared up at him then nodded. “Fine.”

Bonnie and Michael looked at each other. “OK, so what do we do?” She asked.

“You two, and Max, should just wait until a job presents itself.” Batman replied.

Max nearly grinned. “Is that what we have to do?”

Both Kitt and Batman glared at her.

“What?”

Gordon patted her on the back. “I have a job for you. You and I are going to do some internet searching. We need to find some contacts. People who have ‘droids.”

“OK.” Max sighed.

“I’ll help.” Bonnie offered.

Gordon nodded. “Good.”

Michael looked around the room. What was he going to do? He decided that he wouldn’t ask. He would find something to do on his own.

“So it’s settled?” Devon asked.

“Yes.” Kitt said. “Bonnie, Gordon and Max find the ‘droids. Devon, you help with the legal aspects of it all. Batman and I will scout the buildings.” Kitt turned to Michael. “Would you act as my getaway driver?”

Michael blinked. This was as good as it gets. “Yes.”

“Then it’s done.” Batman said firmly. He walked over to the window and opened it. “Thanks for the food, Max.” A moment later he was gone.

<><>*<><>

“I feel stupid.” Kitt said as he stepped out in to the light.

“You look stupid.” Batman said with a halfhearted grin. “But that isn’t the point. In this outfit Nive won’t know who you are, or what for that matter.”

Kitt gave Batman a nasty look. “I still feel stupid.”

“So, now that you are a disguised sidekick of mine...” Batman said, rubbing his nails on his suit, “... you need a sidekick name.”

Kitt glared even more. “What?”

“How about... the Awesome Shadow?”

“No.”

“Black Kat?”

“No.”

Max laughed from down the street. “Hey boys.” She came closer and looked Kitt up and down. “Nice black spandex.”

Batman grinned. “Good one. Kitt, from now on you are Black Spandex, my sidekick.”

Kitt snorted and folded his arms. “Black Spandex?”

“Sounds good to me.” Max said. “Besides... it looks good.” She stepped even closer and smiled a charming smile. “Black is definitely your color, Kitt.”

Kitt blushed. “Max...”

She backed away. “Sorry... just telling you the truth.”

Batman looked Kitt over. “It’s missing something...”

“Yeah.” Kitt said. “A descent pair of pants.”

Batman ignored the comment and walked over to the Batwing. He reached in and pulled out a red belt. “Here... they are older tools...”

“Toys.” Max injected.

Batman sighed. “Tools... grappling hooks, bat stars... stuff like that.” He handed the belt to Kitt.

Kitt put it on. Max reached over and adjusted it.

“Well, Kitt... I mean Black Spandex... I think your ready.”

“You do?”

She nodded and gave him a hug. “Be careful.”

“I will.”

Batman tapped his foot. “Lets go, Spandex.”

Kitt grumbled. “Retsub sgge kcus og uoy t’nod yhw?” Kitt mumbled. Batman gave him a puzzled look.

“Huh?”

“Nothing. Hey, Max?”

“Yes?”

“When Michael gets here will you tell him something for me?”

“Sure. What do you want me to tell him?”

“Tell him I want him to take you home.”

“But...”

Kitt hugged her. “Please?”

“OK. I’ll tell him.”

<><>*<><>

Despite Kitt’s lack of practice, he was doing well at his balancing act. Two stories above the street he was walking along the building’s edge. Batman was hanging upside down above him.

“You should have warned me about your fear of heights.”

“You should have warned me we were going to climb the walls.” Kitt retorted evenly.

“Didn’t you have to fly in to Gotham?”

Kitt nodded. “Yes. Please don’t remind me.”

“All right.” Batman let go of the building and fell. He spread his wings and glided up to the top of the building. A minute later he was opening the window Kitt was next to. “There. Better?”

“Yes. Thanks.”

Batman nodded. “Now keep quiet. See if you can find any surveillance equipment here.”

Kitt scanned the building. “Tons. ‘droids as well.”

Batman turned and scanned the building himself. He glanced up at the catwalk and glided up to it. Kitt watched him with growing qualms.

“OK. You reroute the camera tape feed. I’ll check out the crates for the Red-13.”

“Right.” Kitt sat down and closed his eyes. “This may take a moment.”

“We have all night.”

Kitt lifted one hand in to the air and spread his fingers. After a moment he opened his eyes and smiled. “Done.”

Batman swooped down and opened a crate. “Yuck.”

“What is it?”

“‘Droid skin. Old ‘droid skin... its rotting.”

Kitt made a face and glanced at his own skin. “I keep mine clean.”

Batman let the lid fall and opened another one. “I think I have something.”

“What is it?”

Batman pulled up a canister. “I’m not sure. Can you detect what’s in this thing?”

“Bring it here.”

Firing his rocket boots, Batman swooped up and gave Kitt the plastic bottle. Kitt looked at it for a moment. “Go back down to the ground. I’m going to open this.”

Batman nodded and fell backwards. He grinned as Kitt yelped.

“You know you could get killed?”

Batman stuck his tongue out and landed on his feet.

Kitt rolled his eyes and opened the container. He smelled it. Then put the lid back on. “According to my chemical analyzer this is it. Red-13. How many bottles are there?”

“Lots. How much would it take to wipe out Gotham?”

Kitt held up the bottle. “Depends on how one would go about it. If you sprayed this in the air as a mist it might take a hundred gallons. And some people might not die, just get sick. If you put it in the water you would only need about five gallons to each city pump. But you would have to do it again and again to make sure you got everybody. If you injected this directly into a person it would take three bottles of this to wipe out a fourth of this city. But you would have to get close to the person.”

Batman nodded grimly. “The ‘droids.”

“Exactly. But you wouldn’t need to kill every one to achieve power in a city like this. Only rich and very influential people.”

Batman grimaced. “Like?”

“Like Gordon and Wayne, possibly people from the Powers Corporation.”

Batman glared. “I won’t let that happen.”

Kitt stood and grabbed the wall. “Nor will I. I really resent people who use helpless computers to do their dirty work for them.” Kitt’s eyes narrowed. “Especially when they have the potential to be more then just servants.”

“Hitting a nerve?”

Kitt nodded. “There were some cases where this has happened before. It gets sort of personal after a while.” Kitt squeezed the bottle.

“OK. I hear ya. Now toss me that container before you brake it open and kill me.”

Kitt glanced down at the bottle in his hand and nearly dropped it. “Sorry...”

“Nah, it’s nothing. Toss it down.”

Kitt tossed it and sighed. “We need to find out what Nive’s master plan is.”

“Sounds like more computer work to me.”

Kitt nodded. “That’s what I’m here for.”

Batman put the bottle back and placed his hands on his hips. “OK, Spandex, were done here.”

Kitt raised his eyebrow. “That’s Black Spandex to you, Mister.”

<><>*<><>

Kitt shut the door and pulled off his hood. He leaned back in the seat and yawned, which surprised him. “Did I just yawn?” He asked wide-eyed.

Michael chuckled. “When your power packs get low you don’t breathe as deeply. You yawn to make up for that. It helps your CPU cool down.”

“Oh.” Kitt glanced out the window and watched the Batwing soar into the air. “Did Max get home OK?”

Michael cleared his throat. “Well...”

Kitt turned and glared at him. “Well what?”

“I took her to her house, but I don’t think she stayed there.”

Kitt’s look got darker. “Wonderful. We need to go to her place and make sure she stayed where you dropped her off.”

“OK.” Michael said with a sigh. He glanced over and grinned, then glanced away. After a moment he started to chuckle.

“What?”

“Nothing, pal.”

“I know you Michael... That isn’t a nothing sort of laugh.”

Michael looked back over as he rounded a corner. “OK... Max told me all about why Batman had you dress up in that. But it still looks funny.”

Kitt folded his arms and snorted. “Do not make fun of me. I am Black Spandex!” Kitt glared out the window. “I am Batman’s sidekick now.”

Michael burst out laughing. “OK, pal, whatever you say.”

<><>*<><>

Kitt ran up to the door and pounded on it. He waited for a long time, and then scanned the building. Max wasn’t home. He turned and walked back to the car. By now he was having a bit of trouble staying awake. He really needed to sleep and charge. But he had to find Max first.

“She’s not here.” Kitt said as he dropped into the seat.

Michael started the car up and gave Kitt a long look. “Hey, she’s tough. Why don’t we go home so you can charge?”

Kitt shook his head. “No. We have to find her.”

“OK, if you say so. Where first?”

“The school.”

<><>*<><>

Max looked up at Kitt and smiled. “Hey, what are you doing here?”

“I could ask you the same thing.” He pulled up a chair and sat down.

“Just some late night hacking.”

Kitt looked over at the computer and read the screen. “Find any thing?”

“Nothing.”

“Let’s look tomorrow.” He stifled a yawn. “Is it me or is it warm in here?”

Max felt his forehead. “It’s you. You look beat. I’ll go home and sleep if you do.”

“Good. That’s all I wanted to hear.”

She smiled and shut down the computer. “We have to turn in our art in the morning. Did you get yours done?”

Kitt sat up straight. “Art?”

“You forgot?”

“Impossible. I never forget an assignment!”

Max leaned away from him. “Did you do it?”

Kitt thought for a second. “Um...”

“You can’t remember. Go home Knight, get some sleep.”

Kitt nodded and stood up. “Yes. I’ll do that.” He turned and walked towards the door. “You too Max.”

“I will.”

“Good night.”

“’Night Black Spandex.” She chimed.

“Very funny.”

Max laughed. “My hero!”

“Goodbye, Max.”

Chapter 8

It’s a Fine Art

Max nudged Kitt in the ribs and he lifted his head. “Huh?”

“Lunch time is over. Hurry up, it’s time for PE.”

Kitt moaned and stood up. Curse this body. Cars never get tired. He followed behind Max the whole way, dragging his feet. When The PE teacher saw him, she scowled.

“Your dragging, Knight.”

Kitt glanced up and looked her up and down. “Ydal uoy era os.” He grumbled.

“What?”

“Nothing.” Kitt lined up with the rest of the boys and got bumped by Terry. “Open your eyes Kitt. We have rope climbing to do today.”

Kitt went from half awake to read alert. “What?”

“You know, ropes... climbing... Rope climbing.”

Kitt folded his arms. “No.” He shook his head. “I’m not going up there.”

<><>*<><>

Kitt glanced down at the ground and swallowed. How on earth the PE teacher had bullied him up that rope, he would never figure out. He would have rather been facing off with his dear older brother KARR right now then up here. “All The way?”

The old hag nodded. “All the way.” She croaked.

“Oh goody.” He continued to hoist him self up. When he reached the top he could feel everyone looking at him. He sighed. Now he could go down, right?

“Stay put, Knight.” The teacher cackled. “Now class, this is the wrong way to climb a rope.” She glared at Kitt. “Down, Knight.”

Kitt half slid, half fell down to the floor.

“That is also the wrong way to climb down.” She stepped up to the rope and glared at it. “Watch.” In a moment she was at the top. A moment later she was back down. All of the kids were impressed.

“Show off.” Max whispered.

Dana nodded. “She’s been like that for years, Kitt. Don’t let it bother you.”

“I won’t.”

<><>*<><>

Max nudged Kitt in the side. “If you keep falling asleep your grades will drop.”

“Max... I don’t care.” He yawned. “I didn’t come here to learn.”

Max snorted. “Fine. But it’s time to turn in your art work.”

Kitt sat up and opened his desk. He pulled out a manila envelope and handed it to Max. “You take it up with yours.” He folded his arms and lay back down. “Thank you.”

Max smacked him on the back of the head. “You’re as bad as Terry.”

Kitt shrugged and closed his eyes.

“Whoa!” Max yelped. “Kitt, this is incredible!”

Kitt opened his eyes and sat up. “What?”

“This art work.”

“Oh... thanks.”

“Have you showed this to Michael or Bonnie yet?”

“No why?”

“Because it’s fantastic.” Max turned to Kitt and grinned. “After school all the kids are going to put their art on the board, or take it home. Put yours up. I want Michael and your other friends to see this.”

Kitt smiled and nodded. “I’ll do that.” He let his head back down. “I’m glad you like it.”

<><>*<><>

Kitt spotted Devon and Bonnie. “You called them?” He asked, turning to Max.

“Sure, why not?”

Kitt sighed. “It’s just a picture.”

“It’s so good. You got an A+ on it. Look at it!”

Kitt sighed and looked at it. He tilted his head and smiled faintly. “Well, I do like how it turned out.”

Devon was behind him and clapped his hand over Kitt’s shoulder. “Fantastic, my boy. Simply fantastic.”

Bonnie hugged Kitt and grinned. “I didn’t even know you could draw.”

Kitt shrugged under them. “It’s not too hard.”

Terry walked up to them and glanced up at the picture. He glanced at Kitt. “You did that?”

“Yep.”

Terry tilted his head. It was a black and white inking of Michael leaning on some sort of sleek black car. It wasn’t like any car ever seen in Gotham. The lines were harder and seemed more solid.

“Looks like that car could take on any car here in Gotham.” Bonnie said with a touch of pride.

“I don’t know.” Terry said slowly. “They say the old Batmobile was pretty tough...”

Kitt whipped around and glared at Terry. “I think not. The car in this picture...”

Devon interrupted by clearing his throat. “Kitt, I have something to tell you. Nive will be at your apartment for dinner tonight. You have to come home early.”

Kitt’s face darkened. “OK.”

“You can come too, Max.” Bonnie offered. “We’ll all be there.”

“Sounds like a blast.” Terry added. “Well see you around. I have a test to study for. Bye.”

Kitt gave him a small wave and turned back to the picture. “Batmobile indeed...”

<><>*<><>

Max sat down next to Kitt. Nive gave her a hard, cold glare. “So, you are a classmate?” He sneered.

Candy laughed for no reason.

“Yes. Kitt and I study after school some times for a test together.”

Nive raised his eyebrow. “Really?” He reached out his hand and Lilly dropped an apple in to it. “Is that so?”

Max nodded. “He helps me in math and computers.”

Nive glanced at Kitt. “I’m sure he’s just a wonderful math expert.” He took a bite into the apple. “Kitt, I heard you drew a picture and got a very high grade. Bring it to me. I’d like to see this thing.” He dropped the apple in to Lilly’s hand.

Kitt shifted in his chair. Candy laughed again. “All right.” He got up and left the table. Max stood and went with him. She gave a cold look to Nive as she left.

Nive turned to Devon. “Honestly. I don’t see why you would waste him on such things.” He looked up and stroked Candy’s cheek. “‘Droids are for our pleasure, not theirs.”

Michael angrily stood and glared down at the man. “If you think...”

“Sit down, Michael.” Devon said calmly. Michael sat down and glared at the man before him.

“As I was saying... ‘droids are our future. We shouldn’t waste them on things like art. They are art.” He reached out and Lilly gave him the apple again. “Pretty little thing, isn’t she?”

Bonnie smiled. “How much did she cost?”

“Lilly cost me nothing. She was a thank you gift from a friend of mine. Candy, however, was very pricey.” He turned his eyes back on Candy. “Sweet thing, my Candy. I like her the best.”

“That was obvious.” Michael grunted with hostility.

Kitt came back in and sat down. Max sat beside him. Kitt handed Nive the picture.

“Ah... A Trans-Am... Why does this not impress me?” He handed it to Devon and looked at Kitt. Then he looked at Candy again. “You know, ‘droids have no imagination. They can’t think for themselves. That is why I like them.”

Kitt stood and glared at Nive. “If you will excuse me, Devon, Michael, I feel rather tired. I think I’ll excuse myself from the table for tonight.” Not waiting for a reply, Kitt stomped off to his room.

Max stood up and glared at Nive. “Jerk.” She ran off after Kitt.

Nive gave a ‘humph’ noise and turned to Devon. “She doesn’t know, right?”

“That is correct.”

Nive smiled. “Poor dear. Falling for something that can’t feel love. Pity.”

Michael growled but Devon gave him a warning glare.

<><>*<><>

Kitt sat down on his bed and folded his arms over his chest. Max closed the door and sat down next to him. “Jerk.” She spat.

Kitt looked up at her. “You have no idea.”

“Let’s get out of here, Kitt. I don’t want to be in the same place as him.”

“OK.” Kitt stood up. “Where do you want to go?”

“How about the Mall?”

Kitt smiled a bit. “Shway.”

<><>*<><>

Kitt got in to the driver’s seat and grinned. “Did I tell you I like cars?”

Max closed the door and buckled up. “Only a thousand times.”

Kitt hit the gas. “Nive is more than a jerk, Max... He’s much more. I think it’s quite possible that I hate him. I mean really hate him.”

“I know. I feel the same way.” She glanced out the window. “Kitt, slow down.”

“No.” He took a sharp corner. “I need to... to relax.”

“You’ll get us killed.”

Kitt grinned. “Hey, it’s OK, Max. I was born to drive.” He sped up and pushed the rental car as far as it would go. He had his shades on and was scanning the whole way. He managed to avoid everything and keep up the speed. Max was gripping the seat with dread.

“KITT!”

He sighed and slowed down. “I’m sorry.”

She looked over at him and tried to look like she was fine. “Hey. No problem. We all need a release.”

“Thank you, Max.”

“For what?”

He smiled. “For understanding without knowing all of the facts.”

She relaxed and ran her finger over the car’s door handle. “Most people you will ever meet in Gotham are hiding something.” She turned and looked out the window. “Hey, look, it’s raining.”

“So I noticed.” Kitt switched on the windshield wipers. “Max?”

“Yeah?”

“Batman and I found the stolen Red-13. We also found a lot of ‘droids. Skins too. They were rotting though. But I think Nive may be planning on targeting people rather than mass murder. I need you to tell me everything you know about him and who he might want out of the way.”

“Well, he sells to Powers for the most part, and to all of the main medical facilities. He also sells the chemical to animal fur farms around the country. That’s all I know.” She looked at Kitt. “At least, that’s all I think I know.”

“Good. Now tell me anything you might have missed. Anything at all.”

“All right... About a year ago...”

<><>*<><>

Kitt pulled up to the dock overlook. He sighed. “So he has a thing against Wayne then?”

Max thought about it. “Yes. He’s been one to openly protest Wayne and his business for years. He was full against Powers too. Do you think he would go after Powers and Wayne?”

Kitt nodded. “He might. But he can’t just kill them. People would find out.”

“Not if he replaced them with ‘droids.”

Kitt gripped the steering wheel angrily. “He could.”

Max opened the car door and stepped out. “I think better on the move. Come on.”

“It’s still raining.”

“I know.”

Kitt got out and locked the doors. Max hugged herself to fight off the chill and looked out over the choppy water. “He could also replace Gordon and other people with power.”

“Then why all of the ‘droids? Why not just have a handful?”

“Maybe once he’s taken over, he’ll build an army and take over by force.”

“Wrong.” Batman said as he appeared next to them. He was leaning over the fence rail, looking very glum. “I snuck into Nive’s HQ while he was wining and dining at your place, Kitt. I found something I think you’ll want to see.” He glanced up. “But not here. Let’s go some place out of the rain.”

“Bats don’t like to get wet?” Kitt asked.

“I’m fine. But the papers I want to show you are not waterproof.”

“Oh.” Kitt turned and started back to the car.

Max sighed. “He’s so obsessed with cars.”

Batman smiled. “He’s got good reasons.”

Kitt opened the driver’s side door and looked at them. “Well?”

Max rolled her eyes. “We’re coming.”

Kitt climbed in and watched them. Batman seemed to be contemplating something. Kitt didn’t like the look on his face.

When Max climbed in Batman scooted her over. “Watch it, ears.” She grumbled.

“Sorry.” He pulled out the papers and handed them over to Kitt. Kitt frowned. “Wayne, Powers, Gordon... just like we thought.”

“It gets better.” Batman said. “The ‘droids will be replacing leaders from around the world. He’s been working on this for years.”

Kitt flipped through the file and frowned. “Why would he call the foundation for this? Why drag us in?”

Batman pulled out another file. “Rumor has it that there is an advanced AI working for FLAG. He wants to use its program to make the leaders more life like.”

Kitt froze. “What?”

“Here.” Batman handed Kitt the file. “He’s setting a trap. The last stage of his plan before he starts to take the leaders and powerful out of the picture.”

Kitt opened the file and read it slowly. “No...” He turned to Batman filled with anger. “When? How?”

“All this is his agenda sheet, Kitt. I can’t say for sure how he will attempt this. But don’t worry. I have a full guard on the AI set up at all times. No one will touch it.”

Max blinked. “Kitt?”

“What?”

“You worked on that AI didn’t you? You’re a programmer, just like Bonnie.”

Kitt nodded. “I am very close to that AI.”

Batman looked out the window. “Nive may be trying to use Bonnie and Michael as bait for this AI. I know you can contact it, Kitt. Tell it that no matter what it cannot give in to Nive. If Michael or Bonnie die, then it’s better than the whole world.”

Kitt shook his head. “No. No they have got to be protected. At all costs to... to that program. Computers are nothing compared to human lives.”

“But if it protects Bonnie and Michael then the world will suffer. Hundreds of people may die.”

Kitt started to take deep breaths. “No...”

“Kitt?” Max asked. “I’m sure they will be safe. We’ll let them know.”

“I am watching over them too.” Batman added. “I won’t let Nive hurt them.”

Kitt glared at Batman. “But what if you‘re not there?”

The darkly clad figure stiffened up. “I’ll be there. Besides... I’m not with out my tricks. They are being watched now.” Batman pulled his shoulders back. “I’m not going to let Michael or Bonnie get hurt.” He opened the door and stepped out. “Trust me.”

Kitt looked at him for a moment, then nodded. “OK. I trust you.”

“Good.” He turned to leave. “Oh and one more thing, Kitt.”

“What?”

“Drive safely. I don’t care how good of a driver you are. Another stunt like that and I’ll tell Devon.”

Kitt reached over Max and slammed the door. He then folded his arms and let his head down on the steering wheel. Max reached over and pulled him in to a hug.

“Hey, we’re one step ahead of this guy. We’ll get him.”

“I feel so helpless like this.” Kitt said quietly. “I feel as if I can’t do anything. Like I can’t move.”

“Why?”

Kitt shifted in her arms and looked up at her. “I’m here to protect them, and to do a job. That has never conflicted before.”

She smiled and ran her hand through his hair. “Do you want them safe?”

“More than anything.”

“Do you want to protect the city?”

Kitt nodded. “I have to.”

“Then I don’t see the problem. Just do the best you can. That’s all anyone can do. They can’t give more than the best they have.”

It made sense. It made a lot of sense. Kitt started to relax. “Thank you, Max. I feel better. But that doesn’t help with the real problem, though.”

“Hey, Batman said he was going to protect them, right?”

“Right.”

She smiled. “Then you have nothing to worry about.”

Kitt sat up. “Except you. What if you get caught?”

“Then I’ll just have to wait for the Black Spandex to get me out.”

Kitt wasn’t amused. “He’ll kill you, Max.” Kitt lowered his brow. “I can’t let that happen.”

“Kitt. I have no intention of playing hero.”

“Good.” Kitt started the car up. “Let’s get these papers to Gordon. She’ll be able to use them against Nive and shut down all of his factories and operations.”

“He’ll be mad. It might force him to act now. Without thinking.”

Kitt sighed. “We can’t hold this from her.”

“OK. You’re right. But I hope she can catch him before he finds out.”

“Me too.”

<><>*<><>

“He certainly has painted a nice picture for himself, hasn’t he?” Gordon asked.

Kitt nodded. “What are you going to do?”

“Send in my best. What else can I do?”

“Can they stand up against an army of ‘droids?” Max asked.

Gordon shook her head and sat down. “No.” She set the papers down. “All of Gotham’s Police Force can’t hold a match to that many ‘droids. And with the Red-13 they would be murdered by the dozens.”

“We need to attack the head and heart of the problem.” Kitt picked up the papers. “Nive is the head. Candy is the heart.”

Max looked up at him. “I don’t get it.”

“The Candy code is completely devoid of any real emotions. He needs one that can have the appearance of real emotions. He’s after one I am quite familiar with. He needs it so badly he’s even setting up a trap for it. But I think I can trap him in his own trap.”

Max smiled. “If the heart is destroyed then the head dies.”

“Exactly. Bonnie can whip up a fake program, I can deliver it.”

Gordon shifted ever so slightly, the corners of her mouth turning up. “I like you, Kitt. You have my approval. Go for it. I’ll inform Batman.”

Chapter 9

Heart of the Snake

“Kitt, no.” Michael said firmly. “Not over my dead body.”

“Fine. Then how about over Gordon’s body?” Batman asked.

Michael backed down. “Kitt, you’re my partner.”

“I know. That’s why I’m doing this. Is the code ready, Bonnie?”

Bonnie nodded. “I’ll install it now.” She inserted a disk into a small computer and started to type. Devon leaned over her shoulder.

“Will this work?”

“It must.” Kitt replied. “Our only other option is a head-on confrontation with him and the ‘droids.”

Bonnie nodded. “We can’t risk that.” She finished and turned around to face everyone. “OK, Kitt, are you sure you can do this?”

“Positive.” Kitt smiled. “Now all we need is to lure him to this bait.”

Batman smiled. “Max and Gordon are working on that now.”

“How long will it take?” Michael asked pensively.

“Not long. In fact, I should go back to my look out. I’ll be following Kitt the whole way.”

Devon placed his hand on Batman’s shoulder. “Young man, in case this doesn’t work out for the best, I want to apologize.”

“For what?”

“Doubting you.”

Batman smiled. “Hey, that’s all right. No one believed me at first. I had to prove my worth. Even to the bad guys.”

“I know how you feel.” Kitt said. He picked up his backpack and swung it over his shoulder. “I’m going to miss this school when we go back to LA.”

Devon looked around. “It is impressive. But once we get home, you can finally go back to normal.”

Kitt shook his head. “Devon, this... this is normal... sort of. When has Michael’s and my life ever been normal?”

“He has a point.” Batman said thoughtfully.

“Nevertheless, Kitt, you will return to the way you were.”

Kitt bit his lower lip and re-shifted the backpack. He caught a pained look in both Bonnie’s and Michael’s eyes. He wanted to know what was happening. What were they not telling him? “Michael?”

Devon raised his hand to keep Michael quiet. “We’ll talk about this later, Kitt.”

Kitt nodded. “OK.” He turned to the masked man next to him. “Ready?”

“As ever.”

“Well, let’s go then.” He cast one last look at Michael. Michael wouldn’t make eye contact. It was unsettling.

<><>*<><>

It didn’t take long. Kitt left the building as planned. He was going to go with Max to the Mall. Or that’s what he had said. Nive had caught it through the bugs, and abducted Bonnie and Michael. Kitt was waiting. Tense. Batman landed next to him and set a calm hand on his shoulder.

“While you distract Nive, I’ll get them out.”

Kitt nodded. “Where is Max?”

“With Gordon.”

Kitt nodded again. “I’m taking the car.”

“Not that rent-a-car.” Batman pulled out a key and handed it to Kitt. “Take my car. She’s pretty smooth for an old lady.”

Kitt’s eyes widened. “Batmobile?”

“The one and only.”

<><>*<><>

Kitt was grinning. He had to admit, this car was smooth. She was black, sleek, fast and had enough toys to make the bad guys crumble. “Bat’s, old girl, your beautiful.” Kitt said with pure admiration. Batman’s image appeared on the main monitor.

“Well?”

“I think I’m in love.”

Batman laughed with only half humor. “You’re kidding, right?”

Kitt grinned harder. “Why should I?” He changed gear and sped up. The whine of the turbines became a scream.

“You can’t have her.” Batman said firmly. “She’s mine.”

“But she never gets let out of the Batcave.” Kitt protested. “She can’t just spend her time idle. She needs to zoom.”

“Zoom?”

Kitt flashed a classic ‘Michael Knight come and stop me’ grin. Then he floored it. The scream became an all out roar. Kitt nearly melted. It brought back some fond memories.

<><>*<><>

Batman set the Batwing down next to the Batmobile. Kitt hadn’t gotten out yet. With a grumble, Batman approached the shimmering car. The top popped and Kitt looked up. He was using many of the car’s functions at once. “Bonnie and Michael are on the third floor, Batman. I detect several other people in the building. All are heavily armed and quite threatening. He also has a staff of ‘droid guards. There is only one close to Bonnie and Michael, but it is clearly the trap.”

Batman nodded. “Anything else?”

“Yes.” Kitt zoomed in on one figure. “Max is in the building. She is in the air ducts.”

“I’ll get her.”

Kitt looked up from the dash. “Bring her out safely.”

“I will. You be careful.”

Kitt nodded and reluctantly climbed out. “Shields.” The car wrapped itself in a tight blanket of steel and alloys. Kitt smiled. “She’s even good looking in a self defensive mode.”

“She’s just a car.” Batman said slowly. “There is no real AI.”

“True... but that can be changed.”

“I hope not. She’s a pain in the butt as is.”

Kitt looked offended. He reached out and touched the smooth shell. “Don’t let him talk to you that way.” He looked up at Batman and changed his look of admiration to aggression. “Be careful.”

“You too.”

<><>*<><>

Kitt felt ill at ease. The hall was long and darkly lit. The high gloss finish on the floor made it look like a black mirror. The double doors in front of him were reflected and looked foreboding. Kitt hesitated. The doors swung open. Two of the ‘droids, Lilly and Alice had opened the door. “Come in, sweet stuff.” Lilly giggled. Alice smiled and toyed with her hair. “We have been waiting for you.” Kitt grit his teeth and entered. The female ‘droids shut the doors and locked them.

Candy was lounging in the middle of the room, petting a cat. “Hi.” She said with a chipper smile. Kitt glared at her.

“Where is Nive?”

Candy sat up and set the cat aside. “He’s busy with some people from your foundation.” She stood and walked up to Kitt. “Are you really like me?”

Kitt nodded. “I am.”

Candy reached out and touched Kitt’s cheek. “Nive said that one day we computers would be running the world.” She smiled. “I don’t like humans very much. Except for Mr. Nive.”

“I like humans.” Kitt replied. “I was created to serve them, protect them.”

Candy frowned. “Then we are not the same.”

“No. We are not.”

Lilly and Alice stepped up behind him. Candy took Kitt’s face in both of her hands. “He’s really pretty, I hope Mr. Nive lets us keep him when he’s done.”

The other two nodded. Suddenly, Kitt felt his body powering down. He tried to pull away, but Lilly and Alice held him in place. He looked into Candy’s bright blue eyes. She was cold looking. No feelings whatsoever. Kitt blinked. He was starting to feel heavy. A moment later he couldn’t breathe, he was gasping. After that, everything went black.

<><>*<><>

“Michael?” The figure loomed over him.

“Try again.”

Kitt attempted sitting up, but he was tied down. With a hiss he went limp and glared up at the dark shadow above him. “Nive.”

“Very good.” Kitt felt Nive’s hand rest on his chest. “You are clever, Kitt. But this trick wont work. I know about what you are trying to do. The fake program, I know all about it.”

Candy skipped into Kitt’s field of vision. She was humming and playing with her blond hair. “I read your mind.” She chirped.

Kitt tugged against the straps, but he was still far too drained to move. “Where are Michael and Bonnie?”

“Resting. I haven’t hurt them. But I don’t have any need for them.” Nive replied coolly. He was tugging on some gloves. “I’m sure you don’t really care what form you are in, am I correct?”

“Correct.” Kitt grumbled.

“Then you won’t mind if I take this body. I have a fun little plan for it.”

Candy looked hopeful. “Can I have it?”

“No. Not yet dear. I want to use it first.” He pulled on the other glove. “But you can help me now.”

“Goody!” She clapped her hands. “How?”

“We are going to play a game. “I’m a doctor, you can be the nurse.”

“Can we help?” The other she ‘droids asked.

“Oh, I would like that.” Nive said with a nasty grin. He then looked Kitt in the eyes. “I’m sorry, but I can’t turn you off for this. I need you on to perform this transplant.”

Kitt closed his eyes and swallowed. “What are you going to do to me?”

“Just take your core program and give it to my army. I’ll add the Candy code of course, but as you can see, she lacks a certain life-likeness. Your human friends seem so convinced that you are human they actually are thinking up ways to keep your body.”

Kitt opened his eyes. “What do you mean?”

“Didn’t they tell you?”

“Tell me what?”

“They didn’t buy your body. I did. They are only using it for a time. Anyway, I needed a way to get you in here. It worked, too bad for you, and for them. Well for everyone except me.” He picked up a tool and turned it on. “This may be a bit unpleasant, but I’m sure you have had worse.”

Kitt shut his eyes again. Of all the days of his life, if you could call him really alive, this was the worst day yet.

<><>*<><>

Batman peered through the grate into the room. Inside, there were three she’droids and one Mr. Nive, as well as what looked like Kitt, but in bad shape. Cables and wires were trailing from a large hole in his chest. All were hooked up to a large computer. Batman looked at Kitt carefully. When he saw Kitt shift and gasp he felt his blood boil.

With one angry yelp Batman kicked the grate off the wall and swooped for Nive. Lilly blocked him and received one huge kick in the head. Her head snapped off and smacked the wall on the other side of the room. Alice was next. Candy yelped and cowered behind Nive, who was completely shocked.

“Girls!” He yelped. Then he turned to Batman. “At least the transplant was completed. You’re too late.”

“Too late?” Batman asked.

“Yes. I have the core program in the ‘droids. All I have to do is activate them.”

Kitt moaned and looked up at Batman. “I’m sorry...”

Nive turned and snorted. “Stupid robot.”

“Your going down for this, Nive.” Batman snarled.

“Try and stop me.” Nive laughed. “If you come after me Candy will pull the plug on Kitt.”

Batman hesitated. If Kitt died, then it was all over. “I can’t let you hurt him.”

Nive gave Candy a shove to the computer. “Start the countdown sweets.” She obeyed without question. Nive grinned. If you come after me, your ‘droid friend will die. And the others will start up.”

“If I stop it?”

“I have to turn them on myself at the tower.”

“Stop him.” Kitt choked out.

Batman nodded.

“Oh, and if you come after me, Michael, Bonnie and that pink haired snoop get an unpleasant surprise as well.”

Kitt gasped. “No...”

Batman glared and balled up his fist. “You won’t get far, creep!” He turned and shoved Candy away from the computer. Nive took her by the arm and led her out of the room. She turned back and blew a kiss at Kitt.

“Bye.”

Nive laughed and shut the door.

Batman typed furiously. After a moment he stopped and sighed. “I stopped the countdown.”

Kitt took a deep breath and shifted. “Where are Michael, Bonnie and Max?”

Batman walked up to him and started to unplug the wires. “I don’t know.” He looked down at Kitt and frowned. “You’re a mess. What is this? Blood?”

“Coolant.” Kitt flinched. “Without it, my CPU will over heat.”

“Your brain, right?”

Kitt nodded. He closed his eyes. “You can’t let Max see me like this.”

“I’ll take you to Devon after I find them and get them out of here.”

“N-no... Just get my charger. I can’t go back until this is over.”

“Are you nuts? You could fry.”

Kitt reached up and grabbed Batman’s hand. “Trust me… I have counted the risks...” He coughed. Some of the coolant coming up as he did. “Better me than them.”

“OK. But first I’m gong to get you patched up.”

“How?”

“Trust me. I know someone.”

<><>*<><>

Batman untied Michael first. “Where is Kitt?” He demanded.

“He’s pretty beat up. But he’ll be fine. Nive got away and he has the core program. The one he wanted.”

“How?” Max asked. “Kitt didn’t take the AI with him.”

Bonnie was about to say something, but Batman cut her off. “Max, we don’t have a lot of time. Nive said he was going to the tower. You find out where that is. Kitt and I will go try to stop him.”

Max nodded.

When Batman had freed every one he pulled Bonnie aside. “Kitt was damaged and he said he needs the charger.”

Bonnie’s eyes misted. “How badly?”

“Bad. His CPU is exposed to the air. I’m sure you can imagine what that means.”

Bonnie gasped and covered her mouth.

“He still doesn’t want Max to know. So don’t tell her.”

Bonnie nodded. “The charger is in his room.”

“Good, thanks. I’ll be in touch.” With that, Batman rocketed off into the night.

<><>*<><>

Devon started as Batman crashed into the room. “Nive has what he wants and escaped. I need the charger.”

Devon nodded. “Kitt?”

“He’s damaged. Badly. Bonnie will fill you in.”

Devon nodded. “Of course.”

Batman tore into Kitts empty room and found the charger under the bed. Tucking it under his arm, he blasted off again.

<><>*<><>

Kitt felt the power returning slowly. He had slept, some, but not enough. Still, he had no choice. He forced himself to sit up. It was then that he saw how bad the damage was. He reached down and touched the black case.

“Hey, easy.”

Kitt looked up and spotted Batman sitting at an enormous computer. An old man was hunched over next to him. Kitt tried to scan the man, but he was still too weak. Batman, who had turned around in the chair, stood and walked up to him.

“Everyone is safe, for now. In about ten minutes we will start the repair of your body. Right now we are looking over the scans we took of you.”

“We?” Kitt asked weakly.

“We.” The old man said. He turned around and approached Kitt. He had on a mask and a large floppy hat. “Forgive me if I don’t introduce my self, but I am a good friend of Batman.”

“That’s fine.” Kitt said. He closed his eyes and lay back down. “Where is Nive?”

“As far as we can tell, Nive could be at one of two places: the Gotham tower of commerce, or an old tower in the old part of town.” Batman replied. “But they are only estimations.”

The old man leaned over Kitt. “When you were hooked up to that computer did you download any information?”

“Yes.” Kitt hissed the word out. “He needs to activate each android himself. By remote or at each android... it will take time.”

“He’ll do it by remote.” The old man said.

“Y-your the first... aren’t you?” Kitt asked. “The first Batman.”

“Yes.”

Kitt smiled. “This is the batcave?”

“The one and only.”

“Shway.”

The old batman sighed. “I hate that word.” He scrunched up his nose. “Shway... where did that come from?”

Kitt opened his eyes and thought for a moment. “I’ll look it up later.”

“Do that. But right now I want you to relax. This may be a bit unpleasant.”

Kitt flinched. “Nive said that to me.”

“I’m not Nive.” The old man said in a slightly softer voice. He picked up a tool and leaned over Kitt. Batman stood on the other side of the bed and placed his hand on Kitt’s shoulder.

“Did I tell you this guy made this Batsuit I have on?”

“No.” Kitt half moaned with a small shake of his head.

“He did. Your body is made up of nearly the exact same thing. So he knows what he’s doing.”

Kitt flinched. “I’m glad to hear it.”

<><>*<><>

Kitt sat straight up and yelped. Batman put his hand on the grimy bare chest and shoved Kitt back down. “Ok. That did it. He’s awake.”

Kitt looked around and spotted crates and boxes. The huge computer was gone. So was the old man, the first Batman. He spotted Bonnie climbing out from under none other than the Batmobile. Michael was emerging from under the hood.

“What? What happened to me?” Kitt blurted.

Batman smiled. “We jump started you.”

Kitt spotted two cables running in to his right arm and followed them to the sleek car. “Oh.”

Michael walked up to Kitt and patted him on the back. “Feel better?”

“Loads. Where am I?”

“Basement of an old building.” Bonnie replied. “This was once the police station.”

Kitt sat up again and swung his legs off the bed. He hopped down and grabbed the clothes that had been laid out for him. “Next question. Where is Nive?”

Michael grabbed him. “Whoa, Pal. Not so fast. You had a lot of damage.”

“I feel fine.” Kitt tugged on his black jeans and sweater. He then grabbed his shoes.

“We think he’s in the Gotham commerce tower.” Bonnie replied.

“And Max?”

“She’s waiting outside for you.” Michael answered. “We were not going to let her in until you were at least awake.”

“Kitt tugged on his other shoe and grabbed his black leather coat. “Where is that belt you gave me the other day?” Kitt directed his question right at Batman.

“The car.”

“Open up girl.” Kitt said patting the smooth surface. The car popped its canopy and Kitt climbed in.

Bonnie marched up to him. “Kitt, stay here. That’s an order.”

“Sorry Bonnie. When you changed me you forgot to add the manual over ride switch.” He put the red belt on and pulled his shades out of his pocket. “Batman, you ready?”

“Sure, but...”

“I was out for five hours. Nive only needed four.”

“Roger that. I’ll cover you in the Batwing.” Batman blasted off and out the window.

Michael stepped up to Kitt. “Kitt, you nearly got killed last time.”

Kitt pulled on the car’s safety belt and buckled in. He then put on the shades. “Michael, if the androids are sent out to complete their mission then it won’t matter what shape I’m in. I’ll have failed.” He closed the canopy and started the car up. It went from purr to roar in an instant. They raced out the door.

Kitt spotted Max and slammed on the brakes. The car slid sideways and stopped an inch from Max. “Open up Knight!”

Kitt opened the top. “All right. Climb in. I have to talk to you.”

Max was visibly surprised. She jumped in and Kitt closed the top up. “First of all, Nive has the program he needs. Second, he’ll go after Gordon and possibly Devon.”

“Why Devon?” Batman asked through the com.

“To get me or Bonnie or whoever. Devon has a lot of power in his own realm. Can you pick him up and take him to the station?”

“Sure. I won’t be long.”

Kitt slammed down on the gas and Max gasped. “KITT!”

“Batmobile can take it.”

“Maybe it can...”

“She.”

“She?” Max asked, flustered.

“This car is a she all right.” Kitt stroked the dash with fondness. “Most beautiful thing I have ever seen.”

“Is that so?” Max snorted. She folded her hands and looked out her window.

“Listen, Max, Gordon is in danger. I need you to stay with her since you’re so good with computers. You might be able to disable one or two androids if they go after her.”

“I can’t do that!”

“Yes you can. I think I may know a way to stop the androids. It’s a long shot, but we don’t have much of a choice. The AI program in them has one function: to protect and serve humans at any cost to themselves. I know Nive is a master at programming, but I’m hoping the core was left intact.”

“I think I understand.” Max gripped the seat as they turned a corner. She looked out over the city as they sped onto a sky bridge. The sun was coming up, giving the sky a lovely pink color.

“Max?”

“What?”

“When this is all over... I’d like to... keep in touch.” He gave her a quick glance.

“I don’t see why I can’t come see you in LA. Is it because of Devon? Or Michael? Your no one’s slave, Kitt, you’re a human being.”

Kitt winced. “Your a great girl, Max. But I can’t see you again after this.”

“Why? Is there another girl?”

Kitt laughed gently. “I wish it were that easy. No, Max. This car is the only other girl in my life.”

Max started to pout. “Then why?”

Kitt sighed. “We’re here.” He slammed on the brakes and opened the top. “If you have any trouble at all...”

“I know who to call.”

Kitt smiled. “Watch yourself.”

She hugged him and gave him a kiss. Kitt pulled back, caught of guard.

“Next time, I expect you to kiss back.” She said as she jumped out. Kitt gawked at her for a moment before closing the top again. He then raced off.

<><>*<><>

Batman jumped into the room again, startling Devon, who had been reading. He stood and set the book down. “How is Kitt? Are Bonnie and Michael all right?”

“Everyone is fine, now. I came to take you to Bonnie and Michael.”

Devon nodded. “Very well. My I ask how we are going to travel?”

“Batwing. It only has one chair, but it’s better than walking.”

“Quite.” Devon followed Batman out the window and stepped on to the hovering craft. He looked it over and gave Batman a nod. “Excellent. Quite remarkable.”

“Hold your praise until we land.” Batman said dryly. “It’s not a comfortable ride.”

Devon stepped up to the cockpit and looked in. “I see what you mean. Still, it’s a wonderful craft.”

“Well, thanks.”

<><>*<><>

Kitt parked and got out of the car. He called for shields and went to hide in the shadows. It wasn’t long before Batman arrived. They both then proceeded into the tower. It was a long climb to the top, but rewarding. Nive grinned as they burst into the room where he was sitting. Candy was at his side.

“Hello again, Kitt.” Candy said happily.

Chapter 10

Head of the Snake

Kitt growled and lunged at Candy. It took both Batman and Nive by surprise, but not Candy. The second they collided it was a brawl. Batman, satisfied that Kitt could handle the she-droid, turned to Nive.

“I don’t know what you have done, but I intend to stop it.” Something shattered in the background.

Nive stood and gave Batman a very pensive glare. “One ‘droid seems to be no match for the two of you.” He snapped his fingers and six large ‘droids entered the room. Kitt stopped fighting and looked up. Candy jumped back over to Nive and stuck her tongue out at Kitt.

“What we have here, dear crime fighters are just a handful. I know for a fact, Batman, you have had no problem with the ‘droids from other factories. Up to I believe, ten?”

Batman braced himself. “Kitt, can you think of a way out of this?”

“No. Not yet.” He stood next to Batman and braced himself. All at once the ‘droids, followed by more ‘droids, attacked. Nive sat calmly in his chair and watched. Kitt was struggling with one, but Batman took on two at a time. In a few minutes Batman, standing tall, had them more or less defeated. Kitt, however, had taken a beating.

“Forget it Nive, I can do this all night.” Batman said coolly.

“I’m impressed.” He clapped. “Very impressed.”

“I’m not.” Candy whined.

“I know, my dear.”

Batman crouched. “Nive, I’ve had enough of you.” He lunged for the taller man and slammed into him. Both went crashing through the window. Candy screamed.

She ran to the window’s ledge and leaned out. But seeing the distance she backed up, quite terrified.

Kitt blinked. “You have the core now too, don’t you?”

She whipped around and glared at him. “I’m not done with you! Look what you did to Mr. Nive’s office!”

Kitt charged her and slammed her up against the window’s ledge. She cried out and twisted in his arms. “LET ME GO!”

“Candy.” Kitt said calmly. “Is killing people wrong?”

“No.”

“Think about it.”

She struggled and twisted. “WHY SHOULD I?”

“Because if you don’t I’ll drop you out the window.”

She froze and looked down. From somewhere down below, Candy heard Batman yelp. She let her body relax. “Kill?”

“Is it wrong for us to kill people?”

“It’s ... wrong...”

Kitt smiled. “Is it wrong?”

“Yes.”

“Is it wrong to kill a human being?”

She shifted and hugged her self. “It’s wrong to kill a human being.”

Kitt let her go. “It seems as if my core program is intact. I thought Nive would change it.”

“The AI Nive went after was supposed to be self preserving... and protect its humans.” She shook her head. “That sounds wrong.”

Kitt’s eyes widened. “Candy. The AI that was self-preserving, and I, are not the same. There were two of us. Didn’t Nive know that?”

“I don’t think so.” She pulled away from the window and shuddered. “What’s wrong with me?”

“The core program of mine, and yours, are conflicting. They are fighting each other.” He grabbed her arm. “Let me take you back to the foundation with me. We can fix this problem.”

She twisted. “I love Nive.”

“He doesn’t love you.”

She twisted violently and looked straight at Kitt. “I love him and you want to tear down his dream!”

Kitt backed up. “He’s going to kill humans.”

She hesitated. “It’s wrong to kill humans. Wrong for a computer... but... but not for a human.”

“It’s wrong for anyone to kill!”

“What about self preservation?”

Kitt shook his head. “I believe humans can protect themselves without killing.”

“Is it wrong for AI to kill AI?”

“No.” Kitt stepped back and bumped into the window ledge.

“Then why is it wrong for humans to kill humans?”

“I don’t know.”

Candy frowned. “It’s not wrong.”

“It is wrong.”

“No it isn’t.”

Kitt knew he couldn’t convince her. It was useless. Maybe she wouldn’t kill a human, but she wouldn’t protect them from each other either. She was still a threat to Michael, Bonnie and every one else. “Candy, Nive will kill everyone who is in his way. I have to stop him. If you stand in my way I’m going to have to destroy you.”

“Not if I destroy you first.” Having said that, she lunged. Kitt felt her slam into him. She had braced he self so that she wouldn’t fall, but Kitt grabbed her on his way through the window. She screamed. Kitt shut his eyes. He couldn’t die like this... there were still too many ‘droids out there. But wishing wasn’t going to fix this.

<><>*<><>

Max jumped out of the car and ran up to Batman. He was rolling his shoulder and grimacing. Nive was in the hands of two huge cops. In the background, ‘droids of all sizes and shapes were being dismantled by other ‘droids. It looked like a cannibal feast. She spotted one ‘droid with blond hair. It was Candy. She was broken and throwing a fit.

“Where is Kitt?”

“He’s...”

“Over here.” Kitt replied.

Max turned to where the sound was coming from and nearly fainted. Leaning on Michael’s shoulder was the battered form of an android. It was nearly as broken as Candy. “K-Kitt?”

Kitt pulled himself off of Michael’s shoulder and made his way over to her. Batman opened his mouth to say something, but Michael grabbed him and dragged him off.

“I think we should leave them alone, don’t you?”

“Uh... yeah.”

Max covered her mouth and sat down slowly. “What?”

Kitt dropped down next to her and hissed with the obvious pain. When it passed he sighed and looked at her. “I am The Knight Industries Two Thousand, normally the most advanced car in the world. If you prefer you can call me Kitt. I am the advanced AI created by Wilton Knight, the man who created FLAG, The Foundation for Law and Government.” Kitt picked up Max’s shaking hand. “I’m so sorry I lied to you. I didn’t want this...”

“H--Hey. You never said you went an android.”

Kitt looked up and smiled. “You forgive me?”

“Sure. I mean... What else are friends for?”

Kitt didn’t know what to say, so he grabbed her and hugged her. “Thank you.”

“Kitt.”

Kitt froze. Candy was behind him. Slowly he let go and pulled him self off the ground.

She was scraped up, sparking and very angry. “Nive... is going to prison. He is going to be executed by the other humans.” Her words were ice.

Kitt stood and braced him self. “I’m sorry. But he was going to kill hundreds.”

“You said it’s wrong for people to kill people.”

Kitt nodded. “But sometimes it’s the only way to stop things like this.”

Max stood and glared. “He was going to kill people and take over the world.”

“He was a brilliant man!” Candy cried. She crouched back and lunged for Kitt. In a moment of time, Max had shoved him out of the way, and screamed.

<><>*<><>

Batman reached the scene first, Michael, Bonnie and Devon all were on his heels. Max was on the ground, moaning. Candy had her pinned down. Kitt was only an inch away. He stood slowly and grabbed Candy. Candy yelped and twisted. Kitt only grabbed harder. In one smooth motion he thrust his hand through her thin body. Grabbing her processor on the way through. Candy shrieked and went limp. Kitt tossed her to the side with utter disgust. Then he dropped next to Max. Max coughed and flinched away. Kitt scooped her up.

Michael rushed over and knelt next to them. “MAX!”

She shuddered and buried her face in Kitt’s shirt. Kitt pulled her closer and backed away From Michael. “Get an ambulance.”

“They are already one their way.” Batman said, slowly kneeling next to them as well.

Max was shivering. “Cold.” She whispered. Devon took his jacket off and wrapped it around her.

“Scan her, Kitt.” Bonnie instructed.

Kitt sighed and ran his hand through her short hair. “I already have.” He closed his eyes. “Hold on Max. Just hold on.”

“C-can I come... to LA... now?”

“Sure. But… I’ll be a car again. They don’t own this body.”

Batman reached over and grabbed Kitt’s shoulder. “The ambulance is here. I’ll take her over.”

Kitt nodded and let Batman take Max. Max moaned again and coughed.

Bonnie hugged Kitt. “Come on, let’s get you fixed up.”

He nodded and stood. “She pushed me out of the way. Why would she do that?”

“You know why, my boy.” Devon sighed. He wrapped his arms around Kitt and pulled him towards the waiting car.

Kitt looked back. He expected to find himself crying, but this time he couldn’t. Exhausted, he collapsed into the car and leaned on Michael. Michael in return wrapped his arm around him. “She’ll be fine pal. She’s tough.”

“I know.” Kitt said wearily. Then he fell asleep.

Chapter 11

Fly Away from Here

Kitt yanked his backpack over his shoulder and fell in step with Michael. Three days ago the assignment was over. Two days of repair work on Kitt's body had followed. Then every one slept yesterday straight through. Now they were leaving. Flying out.

“Still afraid of flying?” Devon asked.

“Yes, but after falling ten stories I fear it much less.”

Devon chuckled. “Good to hear.”

“KITT! WAIT!”

Kitt whipped around and grinned. “MAX!”

Terry was pushing Max in a wheelchair. An older man was walking next to him. Devon gasped. “That is Mr. Wayne.”

The three approached and Max reached out to Kitt. Kitt leaned over and hugged her. “I’m glad your OK.”

“OK?” I have a broken leg, two broken toes and a very bruised rear end.” She smiled. “I’m fine!”

Mr. Wayne extended his hand to Devon. “It’s a pleasure to meet you. I have heard of your Foundation for Law and Government before.”

Devon took the hand and smiled. “It’s a pleasure to meet you as well. I have heard a great deal about you.”

Wayne frowned. “Don’t believe any of it, they are all lies.”

Terry laughed. “Not all of them.”

Max laughed as well. “The whole city is talking about you guys. Gordon is going to give a speech later about how they need something like FLAG in this city.”

“What about Batman?” Terry whined. “He’s done a pretty good job so far.”

“Yes, but Kitt here, is a lot better at computer work. You know... with computers?”

Wayne cleared his throat. “I wanted to thank you for what all you have done. I hear that I was one of Nive’s targets.”

Michael nodded. “Yes. You were one of the top ten.”

Wayne pulled out a piece of paper. “You know, there is a lot of confusion in Bio-tec right now. They are having trouble keeping track of all the incoming androids. They seem to have misplace at least one of them.” He handed the paper to Devon. Devon gave his ‘I can’t believe how much money this is’ gasp.

“But...” Devon shook his head. “I can’t except this.”

“What is it?” Bonnie asked, trying to see the paper.

“It’s the rights to the android body Kitt is currently in.” Terry said. “After all, what is one body, Huh?”

Michael whooped with excitement. Bonnie grabbed Kitt and hugged him. Devon rubbed his temples. “The board will want Kitt back into the Pontiac.”

“Then Kitt will just have to show him what he can do as a human being.” Max retorted. “Right, Kitt?”

Kitt blinked. “Yes.” He nodded. “I’ll do that.” A smile formed on his lips. He then grinned and straightened up. “They can’t put me back in the car until they find out what this body can do first!”

“That’s the spirit!” Michael said. He grabbed Wayne’s hand and shook it. “Thank you Mr. Wayne.”

He nodded. “It’s nothing.”

“It’s over a million dollars!” Devon retorted.

Terry shrugged. “Like he said, it’s nothing.”

‘Calling all passengers for flight 113.’

Kitt flinched. “That’s us.”

Max reached out again. “Good bye, Kitt.”

Kitt hugged her. “I guess this means you can come see me in LA.”

“Really?”

Kitt nodded. “Please do. I want you to see my old body. It’s much better than the Batmobile.”

Max pulled away. “I thought you were in love with that car.”

“I am. I can’t refute that, but my body is better. At least it’s stronger. She has a lot more toys.”

Wayne smiled. “I’ve seen that car. She’s a pain in the butt, or so I’ve heard.”

Bonnie grinned. “I got a look at it. Kitt’s right. She’s lovely.”

‘Last call for flight 113.’

Devon shook Wayne’s hand again. “Thank you. Thank you very much.”

Wayne nodded. “It takes a lot to keep this city safe. I have to say I’m impressed.”

Max grinned. “I’ll come see you as soon as summer break is here!”

“I’d like that.” Kitt replied. He picked up his backpack again and waved good bye.

Now two men were going to make a difference.
