Note: Romance AND angst abound in the next part! And male male touching. You will now get to find out what happened to Solo! Took me long enough, ne? Again, the survival skills are the result of some educated guessing and watching movies. Sorry.
Part 15
Duo woke up and the first thing he noticed was that there was an arm wrapped around him. His body froze and his mind began running around in inane, babbling circles. He opened his eyes and shifted slightly.
Heero, who's arm it was, mumbled and scooted closer, half resting on Duo's chest. Duo blinked and stared at Heero for a moment, debating what to do next.
'Let's see... he is sleeping on me. I could move him... nah, he'd wake up and be mad at me for disturbing me... I could move away from him... but he's warm... I could go back to sleep.... yeah, that sounds good...' Duo decided to go back to sleep.
Heero woke a few hours later, as the sun hit him in the face. He groaned and opened his eyes, then quickly closed them. He opened them again, more cautiously this time. He noted the sun catching the highlights in Duo's hair, and the light played across Duo's features.
He had no idea how long he was staring before he shook his head. What am I, insane? he asked himself. He got to his knees and places a hand on Duo's shoulder.
"Wake up," he said gruffly. Duo opened his eyes and snapped them shut again, much as Heero had done. A smile played across Heero's lips as Duo yawned hugely and stretched.
"G'morning," Duo said, sitting up. Heero grunted, expression surly.
"We need to get going back to Sanq," Heero said shortly. Duo glared as he was none to gently helped up.
"Are you stupid or just suicidal? We won't make it to town before the heat of the day hits, we need to find food and water," Duo growled, his stomach punctuating his last statement with a growl of its own.
"Hn. Where do we get food out here?" Heero asked shortly. Duo snorted.
"I can find it easily, trust me," Duo said firmly and hobbled towards the edge of the cave. Heero sighed and slipped his arm gingerly under Duo's, supporting him.
"Fine then," Heero said. Duo looked at him, a tad surprised and started off. Heero knew in an instant why heading towards Sanq would be a mistake. With the hot sun far over their heads, they would have been dead, dehydrated husks long before they ever got their. It was bad enough as it was.
They walked for a quarter of an hour before Duo pointed out a large cactus. He started for it and Heero kept up as best he could. Upon reaching the cactus, Heero glared.
"What do we do now, genius?" he asked. Duo pulled out a knife and began clipping the spines off the cactus skin. Heero nodded. Duo then carefully cut off a section, making sure not to drop any of the precious water inside. He took a small, measured sip, and then several more. He licked his lips.
Heero shivered. He wasn't sure why, but seeing Duo lick his lips made him shiver despite the heat.
"Here Heero. Drink it slow though," Duo warned. Heero grunted and took a few slow sips, then handed it back. Duo looked a little surprised, but took a few more sips, and they began passing it back and forth.
Slowly, they headed back to the cave and finished the water. Heero sat down and helped Duo sit next to him. He looked at Duo and waited.
"What?" Duo asked, still holding the empty section of cactus.
"Food," Heero said plainly. Duo nodded and pulled his knife again, cutting the piece of cactus into sections. He offered a few to Heero who stared at them.
"You eat like this," Duo said, eating the tender flesh of the cactus and dropping the waxy skin on the ground in a little pile. Heero attempted to imitate him, and nearly gagged on the piece of cactus skin he tried to swallow.
Duo clapped Heero on the back. "Hey! Don't eat the skin! Are you okay?"
"Yeah," Heero said, coughing a bit more. He eyed the rest of the cactus warily and reluctantly finished his half. He discovered it was actually quite tasty when he didn't try to kill himself eating it.
Duo finished off his half and nodded agreeably to himself. Heero smiled slightly, not bothering to hide it this time.
Duo smiled back, ducking his head shyly. Heero cleared his throat and searched for a subject to talk about. He recalled something.
"Hey Duo, can I ask you something?" Heero asked. Duo nodded.
"Sure Heero. What is it?"
"Who's Solo?"
