Unjustly court-martialed for murder and treason, Air Force Captain Natheniel Adams lost his freedon, his family and seemingly his life as a "volunteer" for the government's "Captain Atom Project". Encapsulated inside a nigh-indestructible UFO metal shell housing an atomic bomb, Adams was believed killed until he rematerialized...18 years later, now melded within the super-strong UFO metal. Able to tap into the quantum field, fire atomic-energy blasts and jump forward in time, if he used too much energy, Adams became Captain Atom. When he jumped all the way to 2025, Adam Kelly invented a device to keep him from jumping forward in time. Now able to be one place he joined the first Justice League to battle Darkseid. Captain Atom also remained an unwilling governement operative, even as a member of the Justice League, until Adam Kelly, overthrew the United States government in 2030, finally clearing Adams of all charges. However in 2043, during the battle for the Creator's powers, known as the Battle for All Time, Captain Atom's indestructible body was not indestructible enough for the equally indestructible Visharon. Visharon broke Captain Atom open, causing a large scale nuclear explosion to occur. It destroyed Coast City and most of the Avengers, as well as the Justice League, were killed, including himself.
