X-Squad

Gameplay in X Squad is reminiscent of the N64 classic Duke Nukem Zero Hour, but with much more sophistication. Since you're in command of a squad of soldiers, you have to issue action and formation orders in addition to handling sticky firefights. The game progresses in a linear fashion, and there is no multiplayer to extend the gameplay, but the single-player adventure is fun while it lasts. Since you are in charge of an entire team, the game is essentially a combination of shooting action and tactical planning. You can command your teammates to scout ahead for enemy positions or have them cover you while you take point. The only problem is that team members sometimes follow formation orders inconsistently. You can also trade items between teammates. Envy the heavy gun that Judo is carrying? Just order him to hand it over, and it's yours. Overall, the control scheme is very well integrated for such a complex action game, and you'll have to master it to survive. The graphics in X Squad are decent, but they certainly won't blow you away. Some nice explosion and flame effects light up the scenery while characters sport very smooth animations. The frame rate also manages to run along at a fast clip, though overall, the textures and environments seem a bit on the simple side. The cutscenes use the game engine to good effect, keeping the story cohesive with the gameplay. X Squad is a great game for the action gamer who longs for a little more to chew on. The graphics are fast and nimble, and the action can be very challenging especially on the higher difficulty level. Even though it doesn't push the envelope, X Squad is a unique and very entertaining ride.
