- Marion Robert Morrison is born in Winterset, Iowa, to Mary and Clyde Morrison. He is their first son.
1910
- Brother Robert (Bobby) Morrison is born. John's middle name is changed to Micheal.
1915
- Clyde comes down with tuberculosis. He is advised to move to a dryer climate than Iowa. He moves family to Palmdale, California.
1916
- Clyde moves the family again, this time to Glendale, California.

- John Wayne was initiated into DeMolay in 1924 at the Glendale Chapter in Glendale California.
1925
- While a senior in high school his accomplishments was as follows;

- His football team won the Southern California Scholastic Football Championship. Because of that Wayne was offered an athletic scholarship to USC.
- He wanted to go to Annapolis and be a Naval Officer. Taking the test, he came in third out of thirty and was disappointed with the rating. For reasons unknown, he decided not to join.
- One of the first summer jobs held, he worked for Bell Telephone Co. plotting maps.
- Enrolled at USC on a football scholarship, playing offensive. He enrolled in pre-law. He also join a Fraternity, Sigma Chi.
- Clyde and Mary Morrison divorce. Feeling hurt, Marion distances himself from both parents. He ask his football coach for help in getting a summer job. His coach, Howard Jones directs him to the Fox lot and Marion ask actor Tom Mix for help. In exchange for box seats at all USC football games, Mix promises coach Jones summer jobs to all USC players. Marion gets two jobs, one as Mixes personal trainer and another as and extra in Mix's next movie.

Wayne seriously thinks about giving up acting and returning to USC. Not having a job prevents this, so he accepts the lead in a series called "The Shadow of the Eagle". The studio producing the film is Mascot Production that is located on Poverty Row where movies are produced once a week. Wayne will make thirteen such westerns by the spring of 1933.

John Ford starts production of "Stagecoach". He had fights a hard battle with the studio to let him use a "B" actor, John Wayne as the leading star. Ford rides Wayne hard on direction during the filming. After the third day, Wayne apologizes for wasting Fords time on him and will leave the picture. Ford reassures Wayne that Wayne is a damn good actor and that Ford is only trying to get the best out of him.
"Stagecoach" is released late in the year and becomes a big box office hit. John Wayne becomes an overnight success and is elevated to to stardom.
John Ford approched John Wayne to play the part of Ole Olson in the film The Long Voyage Home.
Ole was of Swedish origin with a Swedish accent.
Wayne wasn't sure he could pull it off and was worried that the audience would
laugh at him. Ford persuaded him to take the role anyway. Wayne decided to take instructions on
how to have an accent from Danish actress Osa Massen. John Ford later complimented Wayne on his
handling of the accent.

Dec 3 Melinda Wayne is born
Ford suggest that Wayne take the role of Olie Olson in "The Long Voyage Home" so Wayne can break his cowboy image. The role requires that Wayne speak with a Swedish Accent.
Marlena Dietich sees Wayne in the studio commissary for the first time and is report to have told John Ford, "Daddy, I want that for Christmas!"

After finishing "The Fighting Kentuckian", John Wayne is said to have told the Republic Pictures that if he ever has to work with Ralston again, he will quit the studio. Wayne is frustrated with her lack of acting skills and constant tardiness.

During filming of Hatari!, Howard Hawks had all the animal captures scenes in the picture to be done by the actual actors; no stuntmen or animal handlers were substituted onscreen. When the rhino really did escape, Hawks had the actors actually recapture it again. Hawks felt this would add to the realism.
During the filming of Hatari!, much of the action sequence audio had to be re-dubbed due to John Wayne's cursing while wrestling with the animals.

Is asked by Darryl Zanuck is star in the movie "The Longest Day". Wayne refuses at first then says he will for a quarter of a million dollars. Wayne appears in front of the camera for only four days. This cameo role pays ten times more than Richard Burton, Sean Connery, and Henry Fonda made for their appearances in the movie.
During the filming of Donovan's Reef this is the technically last movie that John Ford and John Wayne worked on together.

During the filming of Circus World, Wayne almost becomes trapped in a fire. During a scene in which the circus tent burns down, the fire becomes out of control. All film crew abandond the set until the fire department arrives. Wayne's character is suppost to be chopping down the bleachers is the fire scene. He wants to finish the scene in one take so he does not see the others leave because of heavy smoke. No one yells "Cut!" to stop the scene either and assumes Wayne leaves the set also because of the fire. It is only when the Fire Department arrives that they inform him of what happened.
Wayne did not appreciate working with Rita Hayworth during the filming. She was constantly late, she didn't remember her lines, and she was reportedly rude to the other actors and film crew.
Sept. While at Scripps Clinic at La Jolla, Calif., a tumor the shape and size of a golf ball was detected in Wayne's lungs.
Had surgury on lung. Entering through the back, doctors removed two ribs on the left side and the entire upper lobe of the left lung.

John Wayne stars in his last film "The Shootist" as John Bernard Books. Prier to shooting the film, Wayne contracted pneumonia. Filming the movie was difficult with Waynes illness, but he continues anyway. His character Books, is dying of cancer, instead of being bed ridden, Books does what he does best. Books go for one last fight. The movie is befitting the life and death of John Wayne.
Maureen O'Hara presented him with the People's Choice Award for most popular motion picture actor.

An angiogram reveals that Waynes heart has a damaged mitral valve. Wayne checks into Massachusetts General Hospital for heart surgury. He comes through ok, but is told that he might only live another 15 years.
Late in the year, John Wayne, begins to feel physically ill with sharp pains in his stomach. He begins to severly drop weight. He is unable to finish eating his meals.

January: Barbara Walters interveiws Wayne for her ABC prime-time special. He does not tell her about the upcoming test for cancer schedueled for the next morning. Instead, he tells her it is a test for gall bladder infection and that he is dong just fine.
January 10: Wayne enters the UCLA Medical Center for surgury. Doctors find he has carcinoma. His stomach would have to be removed and sent to biopsie. Later the biopsie will confirm, Wayne has cancer in his gastric lymph node.
February: Wayne returns home for recovery. Once weighing in at 230 pounds, his weight now drops to 170 pounds.
April 9: Wayne appears at the Acadamy Awards to present the Best Picture Award. He wishes to show everyone that he is doing fine. He is annouced on stage by Johnny Carson, the emcee for the Awards. As John Wayne walks on stage, he recieves a standing ovation. Wayne tells the audience "That's just about the only medicine a fella'd ever really need. May2: John Wayne is rushed to the hospital after collapsing in pain at home. Surgury follows and a large part of his colon is removed. Cancer cells is found and is spreading throughout his body. He will not leave the hospital again.
May 26: Longtime freind and actress, Maureen O'Hara, goes before the U.S. Congress and ask that they strike a medal for John Wayne. She gives a speech before the house. The motion is seconded by the Hon. Barry M. Goldwater, Kathleen Nolan President Screen Actors Guild, Elizabeth Taylor Warner, and
Albert Coady Wedemeyer. The speech Ms O'Hara gave.
John Wayne begins to recover a little from his ordeal. He takes walks up and down the hospital hallway. He tries to encourage other patients to do the same. Several weeks later, drained of the last bit of health, he no longer has the strength to rise out of his hospital bed.
June 11: Slipping away in a coma, John Wayne loses his fight with lung & stomach cancer.
On 11 June, the flame of the Olympic Torch at the Coliseum in Los Angeles was lit to honor his memory. It remained lit until the funeral four days later.
June 15: He is inturned at Neport Beach, California.

John Wayne was honored by the U.S. Postal Service with a commemorative stamp design that was unveiled at the John Wayne Cancer Institute Auxiliary's Odyssey Ball, a fund-raising gala for the Institute in Santa Monica, CA, on April 3rd. They stamp will be issued to the public later in the year. The stamp, painted by Drew Struzan, is based on a black-and-white publicity still taken during the filming of "The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance" in 1962.
