Looking down from the old Roman road toward the dyke-land near Sedgemoor,
Stawell looks
like a large collection of farm buildings over an extended
farmyard. The churchyard stands high
above the level of the road and you therefore have to look up to
the church. Its tower is finished
with a gable more typical of north Devon churches and its lack of
height gives the unfinished
look. Inside is small and there is little left of the old church
except a blocked arcade and the
13th century font.
STAWELL - from the Old English stęg and weill 'pond well'.
Stawelle in the Domesday Book (1086).
