Marius was one of the consuls that set the standard for todays military. He could actually be considered as a leader that developed the standards for increasing moral within his troops.Marius could very well have been the first unknown Marine. Marius abolished the law of property qualification for service enlistment. He was the first to develop esprit de corps in his men without bribes and manipulation. Marius awarded the legions an 'eagle'. This was to be cosidered a cross between a regimental badge and an idol. This could actually be compared to the modern day 'eagle, globe,& anchor' of the United States Marine Corps. Marius turned the regular army into what was called, "a new kind of political force." One of his armies actually said a personal allegiance oath. This is similar to the oath said when enlisting in the military today. In conclusion, it appears that Marius set the standard for branches of the military today. It is interesting how Marius resemble Marine. It is also interesting that one moto of the Marines is 'esprit de corps' and the 'eagle' resemble the 'eagle, globe,& anchor'.So the only questions that remains is, "Was the Marine Corps established in 1775 a.d. or 107 b.c.?" |
