On Tuesday Sean worked late. Viggo waited up for him, just sitting quietly at the kitchen table, a cup of coffee before him, long since gone cold. He simply sat there thinking, the book he had been reading falling heedlessly to the floor. The thump it made took Viggo several seconds to process. He glanced down, his mind still elsewhere and picked up the book. He set it on the table to his left, the right side was Sean's spot. The silence in the house remained undisturbed until he heard the sound of Sean's keys in the lock. He got to his feet, his limbs a little stiff from the chair and went to greet Sean, the usual words falling easily from his lips at Sean's soft question.

On Friday, Sean went out to the pub with some of his friends. He had invited Viggo along, but after a long and tiring week, all Viggo wanted was a quiet night at home. This time he settled himself in the living room, sinking easily into the cushions. Tonight Viggo's attention stayed on the poetry before him until he was suddenly startled by Sean's presence before him. Sean's hands were gentle as he set Viggo's book on the coffee table and gently pulled him to his feet. Sean smelled softly of smoke from the pub. He smiled gently, as Viggo mumbled his usual words, his voice so soft that Sean would have had difficulty making out what he was saying if he had not heard the same words so many times before.

Next Thursday it was Viggo who was late. He arrived home in the midnight air, the stars twinkling brightly above him. This time it was Sean who met Viggo at the door, his eyes heavy from his early call that morning.

"What are you doing still up?" Viggo asked, his voice warm and smooth in the darkness.

Sean smiled at Viggo the same smile he was always greeted with when he came home late. He gently brushed a lock of hair off of Viggo's forehead, repeating the words that always welcomed him home.

"You know that my day's not complete until I have you in my arms again."

And Viggo smiled at the words that so often fell from his own lips when the sky was inky dark outside and he closed the door behind them, shutting the rest of the world out, until all that was left was them. And they went off to bed. Together.

The End.
