Clapton's first band, The Roosters was originally an Oxford based outfit put
together by Paul Jones (later with Manfred Mann) and Ben Palmer. ...but
Paul and another founding member, Brian Jones, had both left by the time
Tom McGuinness asked him to join. After rather limited success, they split
up, before the R&B boom had taken root.
Formed in early 1963....lasted for about 6 months.
Known to have played mainly private parties.
Various gigs in the London area, including
the Ricky Tick clubs in Windsor, Kingston and West Wickham,
the Wooden Bridge Hotel in Guildford,
the Marquee club in London.
From January to August 1963, Eric Clapton joined the Roosters. They did various gigs in the London area, including the Ricky Tick clubs in
Windsor, Kingston and West Wickham, the Wooden Bridge Hotel in Guildford, and the Marquee club in London.
Apart from one appearance at The Carfax in Oxford, in Buxted, Sussex, and an ill-judged interval spot at Uncle Bonnie's Chinese Jazz Club in
Brighton, East Sussex, the Roosters' dozen or so public performances were confined to London's West End (the Marquee, as support to Manfred
Mann, and the Scene), Kingston (the Jazz Cellar club, were they played on Wednesdays for three successive weeks), and the flourishing Ricky Tick
club circuit centered on Windsor.

CASEY JONES & THE ENGINEERS
September 1963
Casey Jones, a liverpaudian who boasted that The Big Three had once been his
backing group, came to London to capitalise on 'the Mersey Boom'.
Tom McGuiness and Eric both joined his band,
"but we both learned that some things are more important than money."
A blind alley down which Clapton stumbled for seven gigs during September 1963.
McGuinness, who survived the 8 gigs as an Engineer, replaced Dave Richmond
as Manfred Mann's bass.
In September 1963, Eric Clapton joined the band Casey Jones and the Engineers. They did a handful of gigs in the Liverpool area, playing
Northern beat and cabaret circuit. The first show was in Macclesfield, Cheshire. They also played at Oasis in Manchester and in Reading,
Berkshire, together with the Undertakers. Clapton quit the band after the seventh gig.
