Partnership Against Geocities' Evil Doing

What is PAGED?

PAGED stands for Partnership Against Geocities' Evil Doing. It's a community for anyone who hates Geocities. It could be members of Geocities who want OUT, owners of anti-Geocities pages, or people who are sick and tired of that damn Geocities Java-based pop-up window that advertises things in which they have no interest.

What is Geocities?

Geocities is a server that provides free homepages. They are our mortal enemy.

Why do we hate Geocities?

Let's say your best friend just learned HTML coding and built a webpage at Geocities. She's very proud of her work, and asks you to come to her page and give your opinion. You go to her page, but to your disappointment, there is a Java-based pop-up window that covers her work! You close it, but then your computer makes funny noises and an "Error Type 11" occurs. Your computer shuts down. Geocities doesn't want you to close that pop-up window. You tell your friend that the Java window on her page is really annoying. She tells you that it's one of Geocities' requirements. She has no control over it. The scariest thing about this story is that it's true. Friends don't let friends use Geocities.

Here's another story: Let's say you just made a page on Geocities. Lucky you! You have 11 MB (a LOT of internet space) absolutely FREE! Plus you have a webpage that you feel really expresses yourself, and when you signed up for the page, Geocities said that there was NO CATCH! But there IS a catch. Geocities puts a "GeoGuide" at the top of your page. This "GeoGuide" has all kinds of banners on it. One of the banners advertises CD Now. Okay. CD Now is cool. But twnety seconds later, the banner changes, this time advertising Hanson! You HATE Hanson. So why is it being advertised on your page? Because Geocities says so. But that's not all. Geocities requires you to put a link back to their main page on your page. Plus, they have this stupid "watermark" in the lower right hand corner of your page that says "Geocities". You can't get rid of that watermark. And it's ALWAYS there! They're branding your art work! Despite all this, though, your page becomes really popular, and with all of your demanding visitors, you outgrow your 11 MB limit. Then Geocities starts charging you $25 a month! This is why we hate Geocities. Geocities is evil.

What can I do?

Join me and the many other people who have decided to BOYCOTT Geocities! Here's how:

1. Tell all of your non-webpage owning friends to get a webpage somewhere other than Geocities.
2. Tell everyone you know at Geocities (and some people that you don't know) that Geocities is evil and there are other options!
3. Delete your Geocities account if you have one and build a webpage at one of these fine, FREE providers.
4. Visit one of these sites to find out what else you can do.
