Having waited nearly two years after losing my beloved cat Apache, i
decided i was finally ready to open my heart and home to another cat. I had
looked in the papers for kittens without much luck.
i spent much of my free time at the local petsmart store. one day while
wandering the asiles, I noticed
Cat's Cradle Rescue, holding adoptions.
I had never considered adoption before. I fell under the misconception that
these were other people's "problem animals", and thought it would be difficult
to keep an animal i hadn't raised from a young age.
Noticing several kittens were
up for adoption, i went by each cage watching them interact with each other and
people passing by.
Unknown to me, i was not to do the choosing that day, but to be chosen. As i
passed the cages, some kittens swatted in my direction, as others slept. Many of
the older cats were frightened and looked to the staff for comfort in these
strange surroundings.
Often when i passed by i would talk softly to them hoping to console them in
some way. One cat caught my eye. It was a beautiful silver persian. As i talked
to it, It seemed to be oblivous to my presence.
This wasn't so in the case of the occupant next door, she had been watching
me pace uncertinly in front of the cages and until this moment remained quiet.
Hearing a faint meow, i was jolted from my daze. Glancing up, i was met by the
largest most beautiful eyes i had ever seen.
They were tinted a bright
yellow, watching my slightest move. I talked softly to her to calm her fears.
Once again i heard a faint meow. I continued to wander about the store, passing
by the cages. Each time she was there, watching me with those mystic yellow
eyes. When i passed i would talk to her. she answered me three of the five times
i passed. It was then i knew she was the one. I filled out the required papers
and paid the adoption fee. After some quick shopping for supplies, we brought
our new baby home.
Gidget soon found her place in our family and adapted very well. A month
later we brought home a kitten, and although she didnt take to him at first,
Gidget slowly began to tolerate him. Their favorite game was to chase each other
up and down the stairs.
One day after playing with the kitten, we noticed that Gidget was keeping
one of her eyes shut. We took her to the vet and they gave her some ointmet.
Since she was an adopted rescue cat and their pasts are usually unknown, our vet
reccomended that we make a follow-up appointment for vaccinations. During the
next visit after running routine tests, the results showed that Gidget had a bladder infection and was also
Diabetic.
This was very surprising to us, because she was only 2 1/2 years old. Our vet
has been extremely helpful in guiding us in decisions regarding treatment
options. After Glipizide pills upset her stomach, the vet told us that insulin
injections were the only option left.
Since being on insulin and
eating a special diet, the changes we have seen in Gidget are like night and
day. She watches the birds outside our window, bats her favorite toy around the
room, and will sit for hours watching our fish swatting at the aquarium. She has
adjusted very well to her treatments and is a healthy very happy cat. We hope
one day that she may be taken off the insulin injections, in the meantime we
greatful that she is doing so well. Able to protect and watch over us. We know
she wouldnt have it any other way.
