Known for hits like Dead mans curve and The little old lady from Pasadena, Jan Berry was the creative force behind the "surfer music" duo Jan & Dean. Growing up i learned to love their music memorizing every word. My parents being cross country truckers gave me an opportunity to see the pair whenever they performed a concert nearby. In my eyes, while Dean seemed to be rather aloof, leaving in his helicopter after the show, Jan stayed behind to sign autographs.
Having suffered serious brain injury from an auto accident, it was very difficult for Jan to remember things. While signing autographs he had an assistant stand behind him to remind him of what to write. I was very lucky to be able to meet and speak with him a few times. It got to the point where he would actualy remember me and say, "Hi there, I know you! How are you?" I was extremely touched that he remembered me. He always greeted his fans with kind words and a warm smile. Seeing the couragous simplicity in the way Jan led his life in even the hardest of times, has inspired me to be the person i am today. To make a difference in the lives of other people in any way possible. no matter how small and insignificant the gesture may seem to me, it could mean the world to someone else. As his meant to me.

I was shocked and broght to tears when i learned of Jan's passing. I will miss my friend very very deeply. His legacy to many was his music, his legacy to me, was his friendship. Which i will forever treasure and carry within my heart.

Jan as i remember him
