At 10 a.m. on the morning of 05-07-03, The Humane Society of Ventura County received a call saying that a person had recovered a cat carrier floating in the ocean off the State Beach near the snack bar in Ventura near San Jon Rd.

Upon arrival, our Humane Officer Ron Willis, retrieved the carrier from the beach maintenance crew that had taken the cat to the maintenance shed to warm it. He found a declawed, female, Himalayan-mix cat and was told that the carrier contained several large rocks and had been below the surf line when found. We suspect that the rocks were meant to weigh the carrier down.

The cat, named "Sandy" by Humane Society staff, is currently in protective custody while our officers investigate the case for possible animal cruelty.

Anyone who may have seen someone carrying a tan cat carrier towards this area of the ocean is asked to call our humane investigators at (805) 656-5031 or (805) 646-6505 or use the confidntial on-line reporting link below. Your information will be kept confidential and could lead to a reward from the Humane Society's Sparky Fund.

The Sparky Fund pays rewards to those who supply information leading to the arrest and conviction of animal abusers. The reward currently stands at $2,510, although the public may donate to increase the fund if they wish. Our Thanks to Ch. 11's Jillian Barberi and PETA for each offering $1,000 to the reward fund. Sandy has brilliant blue eyes, is declawed in the front, has long fur and has a very sweet disposition.

Anyone wishing to contribute to the Sparky Fund may do so with a credit card by phone at (805) 656-5031 or by sending a check or money order marked "Sparky Fund" to the Humane Society of Ventura County, P.O. Box 297, Ojai, CA 93024. Our vet has determined that Sandy has suffered substantial nerve damage, possibly due to a blow to the head. Because she is part of an on-going investigation, Sandy is not available for adoption and it will be at least 30 days before a determination is made as to her status.
