Chapter One.

Monday morning I walked into the office to find a new case on my desk. I opened it up and read the name of the person I would bedefending. NICK. E. BATES, charged with MURDER.

“ What MURDER!” I yelled out loud.

“ Miss Bryce is something wrong?” Mr. Johnson asked.

“ Yeah. Something is very wrong. You see, when I joined your firm I said I would do any case but murder and now what do I find on my desk. A murder case!!!” I said my voice gradually getting louder until I was screaming uncontrollably.

“Kiara stop screaming. I chose you for the case because you are my best atterney. You are loyal and devoted to your cases and you putyour heart and soul into everyone. I know you will keep Mr. Bates out of jail,” commented Mr. Johnson.

“That’s the thing,” I was yelling again, “ I don’t want him out ofjail. If he killed someone I want him as far away as possible. Got it!”

“ You are doing the case weather you, like it or not. or you arefired. Agreed?”

“ Fine!”

“ What’s going on?” Joyce Jackson asked.

“ Finally, someone who will understand,” I said.

“ Understand what?”

“ I told Kiara she was doing the Nick Bates trial and she refused. So I threatened her with her job. I only did it for her own good. I think it will be good for her,” explained Mr. Johnson

“ I agree with him Kiara. It will be good for you,” answered Joyce.

“ Joyce, who could you? You are my best friend,” I whined and stormed out.

After getting a coffee at the cafe I went back up to the office. There was a small piece of paper on my desk. I picked it up and read it.

DEAR KIARA,YOU WILL GO MEET MR. NICK E BATES THIS AFTERNOON AT 2 O’CLOCK. I HAVE SCHEDULED YOUR TIME. IF YOU FAIL TO SHOW UP THE CONSEQUENCE WILL APPLY. SINCERELY JIM JOHNSON

“ I hate him!” I screamed.

The day passed in a minute. At least until 2 o’clock P.M..

“ Hi, I am here to see Nick Bates,” I replied. My voice all shaky.

“ One moment please Miss.”

About two minutes later a tall handsome man appeared. I would say he was in his mid 20’s. What a waste. Dirty blond hair was place on thetop of his head. Two sparkling, crystal blue eyes looked straight ahead. Rosylips were placed in a straight solemn line.

“ Miss, this is Nick Bates. You have 20 minutes.”

“ Nick just stood there. Not moving or anything.

“ SIT!” the guard screamed and Nick obeyed.

Then the guard turned and walked away.

“ Hi, I am Kiara Bryce. I will be your atterney.”

The man did not reply. He just sat there looking lost.

“ He doesn’t talk much,” a lady in uniform said walking by.

“ How can I help you if you don’t talk to me?” I asked.

“ You wont believe me any way,” he replied with a smooth sincere voice. A voice I could get used to.

“ Wont believe what?”

“ Never mind, this is a waste of time. Just go.”

“ Can I talk to you. tell you what I think,” I asked for somereason I believed him and also wanted him to open up.

“ Sure, I guess,” he replied with confusing in his voice.

“ Okay. Number 1. Do you relies what you have done. Number 2. Do you know how long you will be in here?”

“ yes,” he replied.

“ No, I don’t think you do. You see you killed someone. mrs. Smithis dead. Never to breath again. her eyes will never open. Motion........”

I get the point,” Nick cut off.

“ Sorry, any way, you will serve life or 15 years, then you mayapply for parol. So do you now understand,” I asked sternly.

“ Yes, but you see I didn’t kill her. Honest,” he said withpleading eyes and voice. For some reason I believed him. this Nick E bates was really getting to me. Why?
