When I was a little kid, I remember (about age 4-7) we had what was called a "record player". It was made of heavy pressed paper product (it was heavy and strong as wood), it had a turntable that ran at 78, 45, 33 1/3, and 16 RPM. It was complete with an arm and a "needle" (no styluses back then). It had two or three vacuum tubes, a speaker, a volume and tone control.
We didn't have much music for it to begin with, so we were given a bunch of classical and opera stuff which I can still remember it in my head. Of course as time went on, we developed musical tastes and acquired the music we liked. But talking about this period of time when I was about 4-7 years old, we had a 45 RPM record that we nearly wore out. We played it over and over again for who knows how long.
It was an instrumental piece called "Jay Dee's Boogie Woogie" on Fraternity Records from the late 1950's. The artist was a swing band man named Jimmy Dorsey, although I seem to recall the label said Tommy Dorsey (his brother) but I could be wrong. History has this piece tied to Jimmy Dorsey, though. As time went on, that little 45 record must have perished. I have no idea when or what happened to it. The music stayed in my memory all these years and occasionally I could still hear it in my head.
In recent years, I have longed to hear this piece and wondered if I could ever find that elusive recording. Finally, I tried checking the 'net. Lots of Jimmy Dorsey stuff re-released on CD. After several hours of searching, I located some 45 RPM records of "Jay Dee's Boogie Woogie". Happy day!!!!!!! This magical piece just would not turn loose of me after all these years. Now, I was sooooo close to hearing it again after about 40 years. I continued to look and look and found this title on a CD, which I ordered. Since this magical recording is so hard to find, and such a musical treasure, I decided to make it available for downloading here. This is an mp3 file of about 1.2 meg in size. The selection is about 2 1/2 minutes in length. I don't know if it is public domain yet, but nobody is really trying to make it available out there. Anyway, download this magical music and see why it never left me!
What makes it so magical?
For me, maybe just part of my childhood. It could be more than that, though. There is nothing shabby about this recording. If you like syncopation, you will overdose with this selection! Many instrumentals composed today have just one or two "sweet spots" and the rest of the piece is just to get it into production. Jay Dee's Boogie Woogie is just full of clever instrumental nuance at every twist and turn. The more times you listen, the more you hear each time. If you listen, please e-mail me and tell me what it does for you. oracle-1@lycos.com
