Chapter 38: The Game

Taylor and Samantha sat outside of Taylor's house on the grass.

"I'm so happy that you asked me out Taylor." she gushed as she brushed some hair out of Taylor's face.

Taylor forced a smile,"Me too."

She smiled back and then pressed her lips onto his. She grabbed the back of his head and pulled him closer. Taylor grimmaced, but kissed her back. That's when he heard it.

"Mike, stop it!" she giggled trying to push his hands away.

Taylor pulled away from Samantha and gazed over to Erica's house. He put his hand up to shield his eyes from the sun. He saw Erica and Mike out on her porch swing. He growled under his breath. Nothing would please him better than to hit Mike until he cried and grab Erica and hug her and kiss her and...

"Taylor, what's wrong? Why'd you pull away from me?" Samantha pouted in a little girl voice.

Taylor wanted to puke. He stared at her scrunced up nose and watched her twirl a piece of hair around her finger in disgust. Oh, why had he asked her out? He couldn't stand her. He looked back over to Erica's house. She was kissing Mike. Ugh! His tounge is practically in her stomach. he thought.

"Let's go over to Erica's for a visit." Taylor suggested as he stood up.

Samantha stayed put,"I don't wanna." she whined.

Taylor let out a heavy sigh,"Come on Sam." he said giving her his hand and pulling her off of the ground. She held onto his hand as they crossed the street. When they reached the bottom step of Erica's front porch Taylor let go of Samantha's hand and put his arm around her waist,"Hey Erica...Mike." Taylor called out.

Mike and Erica broke apart and looked at them. Mike grinned,"Well, well, well, what do we have here? Are you two, dare I say, a couple?" he asked.

Taylor smiled,"Yup."

Erica plastered a fake grin on her face,"That's cool." she said as she snuggled up to Mike and her put her head on his shoulder, all the while glaring at Taylor.

Samantha flashed them a smile,"I'd ask you guys the same but, it's kind of obvious."

"Yeah," Erica agreed and then changed the subject,"so how long have you two been together?"

Samantha bit her lip and thought,"A week or so," she smiled,"how could anyone not fall for him?" she asked as she tousled Taylor's hair.

"Well, if they had a brain they might not." she said smiling innocently and glancing at Taylor.

"Are you saying that I'm an airhead?" Samantha asked stupidly.

Erica snickered and looked at Taylor,"Hmmm...you sure know how to pick a girlfriend."

Taylor nodded,"Yeah I know, it turned out better the second time huh?" he smiled back.

"Wow, sense the tension." Mike joked putting his arm around Erica.

"There's no tension." Erica smiled at Mike.

Taylor laughed,"Yeah, no tension at all."

Erica stared at him. It was then that they both realized that this was all a game. Who could make the other feel worse? Well, Taylor wasn't going to back down until he won.

"There's no tension,"Taylor repeated,"right Little Miss Attitude?" Taylor cooed to Erica.

"Why don't you back off Taylor, okay?" Mike said.

"Why don't you take your whore of a girlfriend and get the hell off of my porch!" Erica said rudely.

"Wait a minute, are you saying I'm easy?" Samantha asked.

Erica laughed and raised her eyebrows at Taylor. That look made him want to fall through the porch, he was embarassed by Samantha. Nonetheless he defended her.

"Don't worry Sam. I'd rather be easy than never give it up. Wouldn't you agree Erica?" he asked her as if the question were completley innocent, then he gasped,"Oops, I'm sorry, you wouldn't know what it's like to have given it up when your knees are locked together."

Erica's eyes shot down to the floor of the porch,"Excuse me." she said in embarassment before heading into her house.

Taylor smirked and glanced at Mike,"Well, I guess that's my cue to leave."

Mike stood up and cracked his knuckles,"Yeah, I would say so."

Taylor guided Samantha down the porch stairs,"See you around." he called over his shoulder.

He didn't hear what Mike said next, he was was too busy enjoying his inner triumph. He had won the game.

"I'm sorry about fighting Kerri." Zac said kissing her softly.

"It's okay." she whispered back before kissing him again.

"I hate it when we fight." he mumbled when their lips parted.

"Me too." she breathed pulling his lips down on hers.

They broke apart,"I mean because..." he started again.

"Zac," she cut him off and stared into his eyes,"shut-up."

He smiled,"Okay." he whispered before placing his lips gently on hers.

While kissing him, she tried to become more comfortable on her bed and as she tried to knock her stuffed animals away, her elbow hit her karate bear,"HI-YA!" it screeched.

Zac jumped,"What the fuck was that?" he laughed sitting up.

Kerri picked up the karate bear perpetrator and laughed,"It was this stupid thing."

Zac grabbed it from her and pushed it's stomach a couple times,"You have some weird stuff in this room."

She pulled the bear from his hands and threw it across the room,"The only weird thing in this room is you Zac." she said before kissing him.

The only sound in the Hanson household at the dinner table was the sound of the utensils hitting the plates. Samantha sat next to Taylor rather uncomfortably, she didn't like little kids. Avery must have picked up on that because she wouldn't stop staring at her.

"Where's Erica?" Avery asked outloud.

Taylor chewed his food and slowly swallowed,"Probably at home Avery."

Avery frowned,"Well how come she's here?" she asked pointing at Samantha.

"Avery, don't be rude, and don't point at people." Mrs. Hanson scolded.

Taylor simply took that as a reason not to answer.

Samantha leaned over towards Taylor a few minutes later,"You're sisters are staring at me." she whispered to him.

Taylor glanced up to see Avery whisper something to Jessica,"What's the matter Avery?" he asked drawing attention to his sister.

Mrs. Hanson looked up from where she was cutting Mackie's meat,"What's going on?" she asked.

"Nothing." Avery said quickly.

"She was telling secrets." Taylor responded.

Mrs. Hanson sighed,"Avery, we don't tell secrets remember? If you have something to say, you share it with everyone."

"Secrets, secrets are no fun. Secrets, secrets hurt someone." Zac recited smiling.

Isaac burst out laughing,"You are a first class idiot, Zac."

Mrs. Hanson frowned,"Avery, I think you better share your secret with everyone here."

"Okay," Avery agreed slowly,"I was telling Jessie that I don't like how Samantha looks and I think Erica was a lot nicer because she would talk to me and Jessie too."

Mrs. Hanson turned red in embarassment,"That is enough young lady, I did not bring my children up to be rude. You are excused from the table."

Avery's bottom lip trembled,"But I don't want to be excused."

Mrs. Hanson pointed to the door,"You are excused."

Avery glared at Taylor as her eyes watered over,"Taybear is also being very mean to me becuase his new girlfriend is here, and I wish he didn't have a girlfriend because now he doesn't spend time with me and I miss him being my brother," she turned and left the room,"thanks for tattling on me Taybear."

Taylor looked down at his plate feeling guilty for getting his little sister in trouble. He could hear her mumbling something about not wanting to eat dinner with Samantha anyway.

"What a brat." Samantha mumbled for the whole table to hear.

Zac pushed his plate away,"Well, I'm done," he announced,"may I be excused?" he asked.

His father nodded.

Zac glared at Samantha the whole way out of the room. How dare she call his sister a brat.

Isaac pushed his plate away,"Can I be excused too? I have some History reading to catch up on."

His father sighed,"Sure, take Zoe upstairs, she needs to be changed.

Isaac picked up the baby and left the room wondering the whole time how Taylor could bring that bitch into the house and to the dinner table.

Taylor pushed some food around on his plate. What was he thinking when he asked Samantha out?

"Daddy..." Jessice started.

"You can be excused, take your brother with you." he said as he wiped his hands on a napkin.

Jessica grabbed Mackie's hand and pulled him in the den.

There was a heavy silence in the room until both of his parents exchanged a glance and both Mr. and Mrs. Hanson stood up,"Taylor," Walker spoke,"we're going to check on Avery. I'll trust that you'll clean up the kitchen when you and your guest are finished."

"Okay." Taylor nodded as they left the room. As if he had a choice, this was his hidden punishment for the behavior of a guest that he brought into the house.

"Did I say something?" Samantha asked innocently.

"Don't ever call my sister a brat." he warned as he got up to clear the table.

"Well she was being a little snot!" Samantha objected.

"So were you!" Taylor yelled.

"Ugh, whatever, as if okay?" she made the "W" hand gesture,"Your house is crawling with all of these little kids and they're dirty and they smell and they're brats!" she yelled back.

"They are not!" Taylor protested.

"Yes they are!" she laughed.

"Shut-up!" Taylor yelled,"You make me nauseous! And then I'll puke on you and you'll be dirty and smelly and ohmigod, eew as if!" he mocked.

Samantha crossed her arms,"Okay, that was not even funny."

The doorbell rang as Taylor was clearing the table. He sighed and moved his hands around in the soapy water. He knew that no one else was going to answer ir,"Sam could you get the door?" he asked as he turned around to glance at her.

"Sure why not." she muttered as she put down her nail file and walked to the door. She pulled it open to reveal Erica.

"Is Taylor here?" she asked trying to look past Samantha and into the house.

Samantha closed the door slightly to block Erica's view,"Yes, but he's busy right now." she informed her raising her eyebrows.

"Well, can you tell him its important?" Erica asked. She knew that if Taylor knew that she was at his door he would at least see what she wanted. Perhaps he would even apologize for this afternoon.

"I really don't think I should bother him." Samantha said cooly as she leaned against the doorframe and crossed her arms.

"Ugh, fine." Erica rolled her eyes and shoved a jacket that she had been holding at Samantha. The jacket that Taylor had drapped over her shoulders when he had first went to California,"Give this to him for me then. Tell him that forever just ended. Do you think that you can remember all of that?" she asked sarcastically.

"Whatever." Samantha said as she shut the door in Erica's face. She then slipped the jacket over her own shoulders and glanced in the mirror,"Well, it could look worse." she muttered to herself as she headed back to the kitchen.

"Who was..." Taylor asked turning around but he cut off when he saw the jacket, his jacket, that Samantha had on,"Where did you get that?" he demanded angrily as he grabbed a dishtowel and dried his hands.

"Erica, she just dropped it off," she tossed her hair,"it doesn't look all that bad on me either."

"Take it off!" Taylor growled at her.

"Geez, alright." she said slipping it off of her shoulders and handing it to Taylor.

"Did she say anything to you about the jacket?" he asked urgently.

"Something about forever ending, I really wasn't listening to what she was babbling about." she snickered.

"Oh my God." Taylor uttered in shock as he pushed past Samantha and towards the front door. He hoped, no wait, he prayed that she was still out there. He flew onto the steps and stopped. His eyes darted around in the darkness as he searched for her. He was too late. He stared numbly at the jacket in his hands. Something about forever ending... echoed in his head and rattled against his brain as if trying to find some alternative place to go or phrase to be. But it finally sunk in, Something about forver ending... He knew it then. She had won the game.
