The Risks & Complications Of Anorexia Nervosa

There are risks with being so underweight:

   6-20 percent of anorexics eventually will die from their disease. Approximately 1 in 100 to 1 in 200 of anorexics dies each year. 30-50 percent of the deaths are due to suicide, the rest are due to medical complications.
   Significant medical complications can occur in essentially all of the primary human organ systems, including the brain, cardiovascular system, gastrointestinal system, neurological system, teeth, skin, bones, metabolism, hematological system (example: red and white blood cell count), endocrine (hormone and reproductive) system, fluids and electrolytes.

The complications of anorexia nervosa:

1. Cardiac (Heart problems):
   Slowed heart rate
   Low blood pressure
   Irregular heart rate
   Heart failure
   Cardiomyopathy

2. Gastrointestinal:
   Delayed gastric emptying, leaving person feeling bloated & full
   Constipation
   Esophageal perforation
   Pancreatitis

3. Kidney Damage

4. Dental:
   Erosion of dental enamel from vomiting
   Cavities
   Anemia
   Low white count
   Low platelet count

6. Skin:
   Development of baby-like skin, over body & face
   Or dry, scaly skin
   Yellow tinge to skin
   Green tinge to skin

7. Depression
