Part X

"Keesha, you were not the most normal of girls." Asia started out gingerly. She wanted to word it right so that she herself would not be in the blame that was sure to come.

Keesha stared blankly at her mother. Confusion darkened in her mind as she tried hard to comprehend what it was her mother was saying.

Hunter looked at Asia carefully. Listening as she spoke her words carefully as if she chose exactly how she was going to tell their daughter the dark truth.

"I did not know that what I did would effect my pregnancy with you at the time." Asia said calmly.

Hunter stood up quickly. Outraged by her words. "Enough!" He shouted angrily. "You either tell her the truth! The whole truth, Asia. Or I will!" He threatened.

Asia simply sat back in her chair and motioned for him to go ahead and explain with a wave of her hand. She could not get herself out of the already too deep of a hole that she was in.

"Keesha, when you were conceived your mother was still modeling." Hunter explained slowly, picking up where Asia had left off, "She knew that she was pregnant yet she popped her diet pills as if they were merely candy or tic-tacs." Hunter said as he sat down in front of her in his chair.

Keesha watched him intently. She was reading his lips and his facial expressions and hearing his words. But she knew that she was not going to like what she saw nor what she heard from him.

"The pills," Hunter started, his voice shaking terribly. "They-they were too harsh for you. A fetus is so fragile that the slightest thing could hurt it." He got caught up in a scene that played before him. It wasn't Keesha he saw; it was the hospital where Asia and him were at when they discovered the defect of their child.

"Dad." Keesha started gently as she went to grab his hands.

Hunter pulled away quickly and ran his hand through his hair. "The pills were too harsh, Asia. They were too harsh." He repeated.

After a few moments, he looked up at Keesha. His face twisted in a deep anguish that even she felt rack her body. "The pills damaged your ear tissue, Keesh. They damaged your ears. The doctors didn't know how badly. But then you were born." He stopped there for a moment and stared at his hands.

"You were born… and you couldn't hear." He had to whisper the words, his voice giving out under the tremendous strain of his emotions. "The pills… they were just too harsh."

Keesha was crying now. The tears silently cascaded down her cheeks as she watched her father break down in front of her.

Taylor sat up and she ran over to her father. Clutching him in her arms and holding him tightly.

"I love you, Dad." Keesha told him gently. "I love you."

Hunter stared at her with such happiness and love that he hugged her back more tightly. "I love you too, Keesh. I love you so much, baby."

Taylor watched with a mixture of sadness and hope and a newfound respect for Hunter Traynor, Keesha's father. Asia though, had lost all respect he had had for her.
