PUT ME DOWN

“Can I talk to you for a moment, Zac?” Kate asked, twisting her fingers together nervously as she approached the small group.
Zac lifted his head and stood from his seat, “Sure. Be back in a moment, guys.”
Frowning at that statement, Kate walked briskly down the narrow pathway until she reached the back bunks and turned around sharply. “Zac, when are we going to spend some time together?”
Shaking his head a little, Zac looked at her in confusion. “Kate… we’re practicing. Tonight is a concert. We’ll have time before the set of course. We can have dinner together.”
Kate dropped her shoulders and sighed. “You know that’s not true, Zac. You always eat with your family.”
Zac spread his hands out in a frustration, “What do you want from me, Kate?”
“I want more time with you, Zac! But you’re always busy.”
Running a hand through his short hair, Zac thought of the odd feeling and felt a little twinge as he missed his long tresses for that split second. “Kate, any spare time I have, you get. And yet you want more…”
Kate watched him intently for a moment. “What’s happened to us?” she asked him softly.
Zac shrugged his shoulders, “I don’t know. We were fine before the tour. Before the madness.”
Kate laughed lightly and nodded, “Yes. This is definitely madness out on the road.”
“You knew it would change when you said you’d come with me out on the road, Kate.” Zac reminded her.
“But you’ve changed, Zac. We have no time together. When we do, you’re always tired and falling asleep during any of the movies we watch together. And you’re always moody. It’s like you can’t find my company interesting anymore.”
Seeing her fallen look Zac sighed mentally and held up his hand before collapsing on the floor. “Come on. Let’s stay back here for a while. It’s getting too crowded up there anyhow.”
Nodding mutely, Kate took his hand and allowed him to pull her down beside him.

Let me take you by the hand
Away from here to another land
Oh this land in which we live
Where people love and are meant to forgive
And you always prove me wrong
'Cos you're always putting me down

Zac watched on with impatience as Kate flirted with one more tech guy from the road crew. Frowning, he leaned his back against the wall and crossed his legs at the ankles. He waited there for her vigilantly.
It was starting to hurt to be around her now. Her carefree smiles that had attracted him to her in the first place were like razors to his soul. And now they were being shared with everyone, when he thought they were only meant for him.
Turning away from the sight, Zac looked straight ahead before closing his eyes. When did this happen? He was almost certain that she was “it”. She was “the one” for him just a few months ago. Hell, she was “it” just a couple of weeks ago!
So when did it no longer matter what they felt or said to each other anymore? When had that started, and why hadn’t either of them stopped it?
Hearing her giggle, Zac flinched and turned back to look at her again. She batted her eyelashes and let her hand rest on someone’s forearm. Gritting his teeth, Zac pushed himself forward from the wall and headed for the bus. Kate knew the way back; she’d use it when she wanted to. He was too tired and disillusioned to stick around anymore.

I can't take this anymore
I decided to leave
Walked out through the door
Oh, and why do you think I go
Because you know it can never be so
And you always prove me wrong
'Cos you're always putting me down
