Chapter XI

Maria jumped out of her uncle’s automobile and was running up the mountainside of which her great grandmother lived. Anger, hurt, and what seemed like betrayal filled her veins, hot like lava.

Isaac was following behind her. The same feelings rushing through his veins, yet he tried to control them. He could feel her pain stabbing his heart sharply. Spreading like wild fire through out his body, setting his skin ablaze.

He caught up to her at the large oak door. She was pounding mercilessly and he pulled her back. Afraid that she would hurt herself from such blows.

When the door open Great Grandmother Marie looked like she had aged by fifty years since the last time they had seen her, almost a week ago.

Her white hair was much more lighter and thinner, her skin paler, and she seemed smaller and a little hunched over. “Come in, my children.” She said in a small weak voice.

Maria pushed her way in, and Isaac smiled gratefully and let the older woman walk ahead of him, and then closed the door slowly and quietly.

“Great Grandmother, you said you would lift the curse.” Maria said softly. Her arms were crossed in front of her and her eyes burned with fire and tears.

The old woman nodded her head slowly. “Yes, child. And I am.” She told her gently.

Maria stared at her. “Why did you not tell me that my father would disown me for loving Isaac? Why send me to Tulsa to find and love him if it wasn’t going to be returned?!” She shouted.

Marie winced at how loud her great granddaughter’s voice was, but smiled when she saw the passion and fire blazing in her. “You are answering your own questions child. You had to find Isaac. You had to love him. He is your equal in every way, but skin and blood.”

Maria could only stare at her great grandmother.

“Love is blind.” Marie told her softly. “It sees not age, nor race, nor blood line. Love sees souls.” She smiled at Isaac. “You two have souls that have been made by your great grandfather and me.” She told them sadly. “We wanted to show you difference and equal. Hatred and love. Betrayal and loyalty.”

She walked over and took Isaac’s hand. Then she walked him over to Maria. She placed Maria’s hand into Isaac’s. She smiled at the perfect fit.

“You great grandfather and I went through the same thing that you two are.” She confessed. “Only it was his family that disowned him not mine. Mine was for us.”

She smiled at them again. “Isaac your family is for you and her if you choose your love wisely. And Maria, your aunt and uncle are for you too. Your father will see your place someday. But I cannot guarantee when.” She stated.

Maria and Isaac nodded their heads and held each other’s hands tightly in their own.

“When will you lift the curse, Great Grandmother?” Maria asked, not taking her eyes off of Isaac’s.

“My dear, it was off as soon as you walked into your village and into your house.” Marie said before she left.

Isaac and Maria looked at each other and laughed.

“Come on,” Maria said tugging on his hands and leading him out of the wooden house.

“That’s it?” Isaac asked curiously.

Maria laughed lightly. “That’s it.” She replied.
