“Hey Ike?”

“Yeah.” He said not looking up from the spot on the counter that he was scrubbing.

I hope he knows that the counters are supposed to have that swirly pattern on them.

“If Cassie was gonna die would mom tell us?”

“Of course, Zac.” Isaac looked up and shook his head trying to get his hair behind his shoulders. “I don’t think mom would keep something like that away from us.”

“I think you’re right.”

They heard the garage door go up. Zac got scared when he only saw his mother get out of the car.

She walked into the house.

“Where’s Cassie?”

“Is she okay?”

“Does she have cancer?”

“When will we know?”

“Kids stop! Let you’re mother get inside the house so she can tell you.”

Everyone parted and Diana went in the kitchen.

“Looks nice, Isaac. Well, you’re sister has a small tumor.” Their eyes went wide. “They’re keeping her overnight for tests. They’re checking for cancer.”

No one spoke. They couldn’t. No words were there for them to say.

“Guys, she’ll be okay. Why don’t you all go to bed? There’s nothing any of you can do by staying up and worrying.”

They all nodded slowly and headed off for their rooms.
