'Covered Eyes'

"Mom? You've met Laura's husband haven't you?" Isaac asked tentatively.

Mrs. Hanson looked up from the pot of mashed potato's she was cooking. She gave her son a questioning look while she swept a piece of hair from her face. "I think I met him once or twice…" She answered slowly. "Why?

He shrugged his shoulders dully. "I met him today… and there's something… odd about him."

She smiled, "You've been watching too many movies again, Ike?" She chided gently.

But Isaac shook his head roughly. "No, there's really something about him, that's just… ugh!" He said shivering lightly.

A feeling stirred in the pit of her stomach, she had had the same feeling when she met Laura Davidson's husband. He was cold and distant, but she passed it off as him just being a recluse. But having her son admit to having that same feeling worried her.

"Maybe we should invite them over to dinner one night." She announced brightly. "He just might be a bit shy."

Isaac gave her a look of disbelief but nodded his head just as well. "Okay." He agreed reluctantly.

Getting up he started walking away when his mother called to him to get his brother's to help him set the table. Rolling his eyes, he went in search for the evil pair.

That night settled in his bed, the wail of ambulance sirens jerked Isaac from his bed. Zac and Taylor were right next to him when he looked out their window.

"Mommy!" A child's voice shrilled in terror.

The trio stared at each other for half a second before running out the door to see what happened.

Avery and Jessica were holding hands and panicking, while Mackie and Zoë were both crying in confusion and fear.

Arms were wrapped around bodies, ushered into their parent's bedroom and sat upon the bed. Hushed tones were used while talking and trying to comfort.

"Ike, get some pants and shoes on, and come with me." Mr. Hanson said calmly.

Nodding sharply, Isaac stood up. He kissed his mother's cheek and departed to his bedroom before re-emerging and following his father downstairs.

They walked out into the chilly night air and met with an officer and an EMT. Before words were spoken, Isaac watched as Mr. Davidson was being led from his house in handcuffs, while a stretcher with a body covered was wheeled out behind him.

The reality was known before it was even verbally announced.

"You know the Davidson's?" The uniformed man asked coldly.

Mr. Hanson nodded, "I've met them on occasion."

"Anything seem out of place with them? Any odd behavior or anything?"

Isaac shook his head 'no.' "No, nothing." He choked out; a vile taste was growing in the back of his throat.

The officer gave him a skeptical look but continued on, "Do you know what Mrs. Davidson did?"

"She owned 'Laura's Lair' down on North Thompson." Isaac answered weakly.

"Popular shop." The cop remarked dryly. "But you didn't know about him hitting her or anything?" He asked them both.

They both shook their heads sadly.

"Okay then." He said flipping his notepad shut. "There may be more questions that you and your family will be asked." He warned. "But I don't think there will be."

With that said, he walked away, and the cars started to disappear, almost as if they had never been there. The neighbors started returning to their homes, and Mr. Hanson and Isaac returned to theirs. Guilt plaguing them all, for shielding their eyes to the obvious. For allowing such a thing take place, and never doing anything about it until it was too late.

There was a girl I used to know, she was oh so beautiful
But she's not here anymore
She had a college degree, smart as anyone could be
She had so much to live for
But she fell in love with the wrong kinda man
He abused her love and treated her so bad
There was not enough education in her world
That could save the life of this little girl

How come, how long
It's not right, it's so wrong
Do we let it just go on
Turn our backs and carry on
Wake up, for it's too late
Right now, we can't wait
She won't have a second try
Open up your hearts as well as your eyes

She tried to give a cry for help, she even blamed things on herself
But no one came to her aid
Nothing was wrong as far as we could tell
That's what we'd like to tell ourselves
But no! It wasn't that way
So she fell in love with the wrong kinda man
And she paid with her life for loving that man
So we cannot ignore, we must look for this signs
And maybe next time we might save somebody's life

How come, how long
It's not right, it's so wrong
Do we let it just go on
Turn our backs and carry on
Wake up, for it's too late
Right now, we can't wait
She won't have a second try
Open up your hearts as well as your eyes

I on occasion met that guy he stirred the feelings deep inside
Something about him wasn't right
The way he proved himself a man by beating his woman with his hands
Oh, I wished she'd seen the light
How can someone like that call himself a man
In reality he's far more less than that
And we cannot ignore whenever we see the signs
Cause any kind of abuse God knows isn't right
