'Oh Yes, I Can'

His fingers brushed the keys as easily as they had last night at the show. But, now he didn’t have an audience.

At least not one that he knew of. His girlfriend of ten years was sitting in the kitchen listening to him play. Taylor was playing an old song, a very old song.

Well, maybe not that old. It had been released in 1989. He closed his eyes, and opened his mouth to sing.

"I’m sitting here at my piano
I’m wondering how this battle can be won
The woman I was sure I was in love with
Seems to feel that the deal is done
But I don’t, no I don’t
And I want you to understand"

His mind flashbacked to that night, that horrible night in late 2004. November to be exact. Marie, his then fiancée, had told him she couldn’t handle him anymore. The touring, and being gone all the time hadn’t bothered her. At least not as much as he, himself, had. According to Marie, he had become an inconsiderate, uncaring, bastard.

Taylor knew she had been right. And with the help of some pot, he had managed to become even worse. Now though, he was pretty much back to himself. Well, an older version of himself. He remembered being seventeen, and going on the HAN2K world tour. The feeling of being onstage was indescribable. He sang the next verse:

"Oh yes I can
Still be the man
You fell in love with
Oh yes I can
Fire and ice, fire and ice… water…"

She sat alone in the kitchen. She had a cup of hazelnut cappuccino in her hands, a song in her ears, and tears in her eyes. This song reminded her of so much. From how her and Taylor had met for the first time, to when they had became engaged to be married, and how they had become un-engaged to be married.

She had seen how he was being torn apart by the huge lack of sleep, the craziness every time he went somewhere, and yes, even the drugs. Not many, but still some. She closed her eyes as her boyfriend sang the next lyric.

"Well I’m sitting here in my kitchen
But food is not on my mind
I love you so much
I don’t want to see you go
And I think
This must be what it feels like to be going blind
And I need, you know I need
I need you to understand

Taylor was physically hurting remembering all the things that they had been through. The night Marie had broken up with him, he had gotten high, higher than he had ever thought possible, and had to be rushed to the hospital. And how when he woke up, she hadn’t been anywhere to be found.

He sang the next lyric, full well, knowing what it meant to Marie.

"Well I’m sitting here in the sand dunes
Asking the ocean what to do"

Marie’s eyes produced a fresh batch of tears at this line. Seven years ago, right after she had broken off the relationship with Taylor, in fact that same night, he had felt the need to get high to ease the pain of the break-up, Isaac had informed her about the whole thing, and she had run. Run as far, and as fast as she could to the beach. Or sand dunes.

"I found my life again
And it’s you I want to share it with
But I’m so afraid of losing you
And I know, you know I know
And I want you to understand…"

Taylor thought about when he had asked her to reconsider the break up. He had gone through numerous months of rehab, and even had to be watched when he took even something as legal, and as safe as aspirin.

But he had basically, as the song said, found his life again, and wanted to share it with her. But convincing her had not been at all easy. She knew he had gone through a lot, but just wouldn’t believe that he was back to "Her same old Taylor Hanson".

He sang the final lyrics.

"Oh yes I can
Still be the man
You fell in love with
Oh yes I can
You see, I’m talking about
Fire and ice
Fire and ice
Makes… water"

He finished the song, and let his head drop to the keys. He had known then, and he knew even now, that given the chance, they would have been able to rebuild the relationship with himself and his love. But she had never given him the chance. She hadn’t even given herself the chance. She had committed suicide the night he had asked to rekindle their relationship. And that hurt more than anything.

She got up from the table, and walked into the living room where Taylor sat, with his head resting on the piano keys, making a very interesting sound. She put her hand on his shoulder. "I still love you, Taylor." She said.

Taylor suddenly got very warm. His shoulder seemed tingly. He smiled a little to himself. Then, almost a whisper in his head, he heard the words: "I still love you, Taylor."
