Chapter #29

Dahven fidgeted nervously, standing at the end of the hallway.

Her eyes strayed to the door that her past hid behind. But it was as if it had some sort of power to work it's way into her thoughts.

"Have you been up there lately?" Arie asked stepping up behind her, with Jessobel in his hands.

She nodded her head carefully in thought, without taking her eyes off the haunting door. "It's as if, it knows exactly when to make it's presence known to me." She murmured.

Arie nodded his head in understanding. "In Washington, I have a room just like this. I didn't take all my old gifts with me." He told her quietly. "Some's still in the attic."

Dahven took a deep breath, "Sometimes I wonder if Syrus even knew… or knows about what he's done to us. To us all."

"I don't think he does." Arie muttered angrily, reflexively holding Jessobel closer to him.

He looked down into her small pink chubby face and smiled adoringly at her. "I don't think he even cares." He countered.

Turning slowly, Dahven faced him. She watched as she coddled her niece in his arms, and cooed softly to her. Her face smiled in wonder. Curious and excited with the idea of holding someone of your own creation.

She felt a sting of guilt, knowing that since Angel was not her daughter, would she treat her any less when she had a child?

Shaking her head and clearing her throat, Dahven waited for Arie's eyes to meet hers.

She took in a shaky breath. "I'm going to my lawyers tomorrow…" She said quietly the confused but hopeful look on his face made her decide that not looking at her would make this conversation easier.

Facing the wall she continued, "I'm giving you the firm." Her voice cracked. "I know you want it, so that you will have your respect and power." She stated.

"So I'm giving it to you."

After a second's worth of silence, Dahven looked up at him. His mouth was thinned into a pleasured smile, and she turned her head away in disgust.

"You're leaving tomorrow." She told him coldly.

Then she brushed past him quickly. Going into her room and shutting the door firmly behind her.

The noise waking Angel up from her afternoon nap.

Groaning from her stupidity, Dahven rushed to her crib and lifted Angel out and started to bounce her lightly. Trying in vain to silence the cries emanating from the small body.

Finally getting an idea a minute later, Dahven placed Angel against her shoulder, and seated herself in the rocking chair. Before she started rocking, she turned her bedside lamp on.

The lamp started spinning around and changing colors as it spun. Angel's cries started to die down, as she became fascinated with it.

Dahven let out a sigh of relief and leaned the side of her head against Angel's. Unconsciously she kissed her cheek, and then started to rock slowly and gently in the chair.

Her mind starting running through thoughts of her future… and Arie's. She wondered if they would cross anymore now.

He got what he wanted, there was nothing left for him here. All except, Christian Courts.
