Chapter #37

The doorbell rang when Dahven rolled her eyes, but they all ignored it. Knowing that Mr. and Mrs. Hanson would answer it before they could anyway.

Shifting her position on the couch, Dahven placed Angel on her left side, and leaned to the right, to lean against Isaac. She smiled when Angel helped pull Zoë up onto the couch next to her.

Poking Isaac in the ribs gently, she pointed over to the two girls holding each other in a hug, watching the Disney movie intently.

A discussion and questioning session seemed to go on at the front door. It was normal so no one said anything.

After a few minutes Mr. Hanson walked into the front room and gave Dahven a grim look before she was able to turn her head and face him.

Cautiously Dahven gave him questioning look, before looking over at Isaac worriedly. "Something wrong, Mr. Hanson?" She asked turning back to face him, her voice near a hoarse whisper from the uneasiness that she felt.

He cleared his voice and that set Dahven on edge. An officer walked through the still opened door.

"This is Officer Keegan, Charm." Mr. Hanson said respectively, but tightly.

"Are you Miss Dahven Christian?" The uniformed police officer questioned her guardedly.

Slowly Dahven started nodding her head. "Yes, yes I am." She gripped onto Angel and Isaac. Trying to stay relaxed. "What's the matter?"

He brought out a thick small binder, and removed a piece of paper. Carefully he served her the subpoena.

Dahven took in a sharp breath. "What's this about?" She questioned in a barely audible tone as she started to stand up. Isaac stood up with her.

"You Miss Dahven Christian, have been subpoenaed to show up in Seattle, Washington. To the county courthouse for the contesting of Mrs. Kasha Rhiannon Christian's will."

Isaac quickly placed his hand on her arm, and Dahven struggled to keep her tears back.

Extending her hand in an extreme slow pace, she accepted the folded piece of paper. "Thank you, sir." She whispered.

Officer Keegan nodded his head curtly, and walked out of the house, just doing his job, like he was paid to do.

When he had left, Dahven's hand clutched hard at the piece of paper. Crumpling it without realizing what she was doing.

"D." Isaac said softly, as he tried to release the paper from her death grip.

But Dahven couldn't seem to let go of it. All that she was letting go of, were the tears streaking down her face.

"Come on kids," Mr. Hanson said trying to move them out of the room for Dahven to have privacy. "Let's go get some ice cream before mommy can stop us." He said cheerfully.

Immediately, the younger kids were rushing for the kitchen.

Giving his dad a grateful smile, Isaac led Dahven over to the couch. "D…" He started out gently.

Dahven's head snapped up to look at him. The tears still rolling, "He wants it, Isaac." She told him. "He wants my house. My mother's house." Then she took a deep breath. "Our house." She murmured.

Giving a soft sigh, Isaac quickly grabbed her into his arms. Not wanting her to cry. "Shh, shh," He told her. "Don't cry."

She wanted to struggle against him, to lash out, but his quiet voice made her stop. He was comforting her, because he didn't want to see her hurting.

"I'm going to make him sign it over to me." She said after she took in a calming breath.

Leaning back slightly, Isaac looked down at her. "How are you going to do that?"

Dahven took another deep breath, "I'm going to trade him my firm, for my house."

Instantly Isaac shot up from his seat. "Are you sure about this?" He asked carefully. He wanted to support her, but the overwhelming desire to make her realize that that was what her brother was setting this up for held strong in his mind.

She nodded her head, and then stared at her hands. "I know he wants the firm, Isaac." She relayed to him. "But I want my house more than that firm."

"But D…" He started.

Dahven cut him off. "I'm making the same arrangements for the house, as I made for the firm. I won't be able to sell it, and if I fall behind on payments, he’ll get it."

Sinking down beside her again, Isaac nodded his head in agreement. "Okay, D." He told her. "We'll do it. Together."

Looking up at him, she smiled through whatever tears she was letting flow now. She threw her arms around him and hugged as tight as she could. All she needed was him to back her up, and she felt like she could do anything.
