'The Secrets To Tell'

Refusing to go out alone again, and allowing her mother into the lawyer's office, Grace left her sitting in the waiting room as she cautiously walked down the hall. Doubting that she could handle another emotional outburst from Mr. Hanson, she tried to build up her nerve and resolve to get her through the upcoming minutes.
Tapping lightly on the frosted glass proclaiming Bru's office, she held her breath and waited until it was opened to her.
   "Come insides, Miss James."
Nodding jerkily, Grace stepped inside the doorway and was already headed for one of the chairs she knew was in front of his desk before she stopped suddenly.
Zac and Taylor were occupying the chairs, and Isaac was leaning against the far side wall. They all had tension tight faces, and Grace related well for she knew her own face was pinched tightly.
They had all turned to look at her, and while Taylor gave Zac a questioning glance, he stood when he realized Zac wouldn't. Offering his chair to her.
Nodding her thanks, Grace moved toward the polyester covered chair, and slowly sank herself down into the uncomfortable material.
Turning her head slightly, she watched Zac out of the corner of her eye, and noticed that he was trying as hard as she was to ignore the other. Both failing miserably, for he was watching her too from under half closed lids.
Taking his place behind his desk, Bru cleared his throat to get everyone's attention, and it got it instantly. "Now, I don't know the results yet, but I am here to tell you, that Grace will not get custody over Zoë if she is indeed Emma's daughter. The only thing that Grace can do is see her now and again, she will have control over Zoë's account, but she cannot mention anything about Zoë not being with her biological family whatsoever."
He gave her a pointed look to emphasize his statement and Grace agreed readily. "I never once said I'd try and take Zoë away, I didn't even think it was necessary to have the tests taken. Zoë is a Hanson, and she will stay that way. Later on in life, if she is curious about it then we'll discuss it then and decide what would be best. That is all."
She saw the guys visibly relax from her little speech, and she smiled slightly to herself. It was good thinking on something worth thinking on again. Now if only she could keep doing that.
"Alright then, moving on." Bru pronounced as he picked up his phone. "Jeanine, will you please call down to the lab and get a hold of Spence Brightermen for me, please?"
Setting down the phone, he glanced around at the young group in front of him. "Would you like me to put it on the speaker phone when he comes on, or listen first, and then tell you?"
They all turned to Isaac, who rubbed a hand down his face then through his hair. "Just put him on speaker, Bru. I don't just think any of us can handle the wait much longer."
Understanding, Bru slid on his glasses and picked up a slip of paper. "No problem then."
They waited in strain silence, for the phone to ring and their questions be answered indefinitely. If only to give them peace of mind, and the chance to move on to the next problem.
The sharp shrill ring had started most of them, except Bru and Zac that she could see and Grace fought the urge to stick her tongue out at them.
Picking up the receiver, and speaking briefly to make sure he had the right place and guy he then pressed a button on his phone and laid the receiver back down. "Alright, pin number; three-five-nine-eight-two-seven-nine-six."
There was silence on the other end, except for the occasional clinking of glass and shuffle of papers. "Read that pin number again, Bru."
Repeating the number, Bru tapped his fingers lightly on the edge of his desk patiently. He glanced back over his clients, "The results are purely anonymous, that is the reason for the pin number."
Grace saw relief pass over Taylor's face as he nodded, but didn't have the courage to look over at Zac or Isaac.
"Alright, I have the results here." Crackled over the line, "It's positive. I'm assuming you wanted to know if they were parent and child, and yes, they are."
Grace felt a sharp disappointment, as she realized that Zoë must be Mr. Hanson's child, not Emma's. After she had lost Emma, she was given the hope that something of her had been left behind, and now that was taken away as well.
Distantly, she heard Bru thank the man Spence before hanging up and looking to them for their reactions.
Isaac, Taylor, and Zac were remarkably silent, and that drove Grace from her seat in a rush. "I have to go." She hurriedly excused.
Hastily moving out into the hallway, Grace tried to escape them before a hand grabbed her elbow. Panicking, she struck out with feet and right hand, trying to dislodge herself from her captor.
"Let me go, Brent!" She screamed hysterically.
"Grace!" Taylor shouted back, grabbing her shoulders and giving her a shake. She struggled more, but he kept his hold on her. "Grace, it's me! It's Taylor!"
She jerked up, and her glazed eyes started focusing slowly on the person in front of her. Bystanders stared at the couple, but Grace ignored them as she sunk weakly into Taylor in relief. "God, I was so scared." She murmured against his shoulder.
"I can see that." He answered back, rubbing her back gently; "You okay now?" He asked softly, pulling away slightly to look down at her to make sure she was.
Nodding, Grace sniffled a little and pulled back some herself. "I thought you were someone else."
"Yeah. I figured that, when you called me Brent." He felt her stiffen up all over again, and mentally kicked himself.
"Well." She said clearing her throat some, "You and your brothers should be happy. I mean, you know now that Zoë's yours and Emma evidently was mistaken." Emma, she closed her eyes for a second.
"That's the thing, Grace." Taylor replied, looking around them to make sure there were no eavesdroppers. "That was Zoë's and Isaac's blood they did the test on." He whispered. "She could still be Em's kid."
Grace felt the floor move below her feet. "She could be Isaac and Emma's kid?" She squeaked out, at his nod the floor raised up and she felt herself hit it hard.
   Emma's kid. Isaac's kid. Emma's and Isaac's kid?
