'When I Can't Love, Or Hate You'

Zac stared at her. A mixture of emotions had his head reeling in confusion. Everything that his friend was telling him was contradicting herself and everything he knew about her.

“Audi, you have yet to give me a reason for saying what you did!” He said in exasperation.

They had been sitting there for over and hour. And she had been babbling for twenty minutes straight.

Adrianna looked up at him fearfully. Here was her best friend of two years and she had just betrayed him. “There is none.” She whispered. “Unless you count peer pressure and the need to fit in.”

Zac turned his head away in disgust. “Do you have any idea what you’ve done?” He questioned her in a tight voice.

“Do you?!” He bellowed.

She shook her head roughly as the tears escaped from her eyes, that she desperately tried to hold back and hide from him.

“Well, let me enlighten you then.” Zac said sarcastically as he got up and began pacing the floor. “Not only do my parents think that I have a drug problem now, but so does half of T-Town!” He shouted down at her.

“I’m sorry!” She wailed loudly.

“Sorry?” Zac sputtered doubtfully. "Do you even know the meaning of 'sorry?' " He cried out, enraged by such a weak apology he continued on. “But that’s not all that they think about me now is it?” He questioned harshly.

Adrianna shook her head ‘no.’

His eyes burned, “Oh, I know all about it, Audi. Everyone thinks that I’ve committed statutory rape!” He screamed. “Because they all think that I slept with you! That I coerced you into having sex!” He paused for a second. “With me!” His voiced incredulously.

Adrianna was wiping at her face and nose with the sleeve to her sweater. She couldn’t think of anything to say. Perhaps because there was nothing left for her to say. Because what all Zac had stated, was true. She said all those horrible things about him and her.

She was the one who told everyone that she was helping him overcome a serious drug problem, and because he was so grateful for her help, she had said that he talked her into having sex with him. Only she had used the term ‘making love.’

Zac sat down next to her. Tiredly his hand ran through his hair in exasperation. “Audi,” He said in a low monotone voice. “Audi, I don’t know if I know all of what you have done,” He started. “But I want you to fix this before this ruins music for me and my brothers for good.” He told her sternly.

Adrianna stood up. “I will, Zac.” She promised whole-heartedly. “I swear I’ll fix it. Things will be just like before.”

He shook his head sadly. “No.” He said hoarsely. “Not everything will be just like before.”

She took a step back as if she was struck or as if he had shouted at her again. “Zac, please. I’m sorry. I’m going to fix this. Just please.” She begged. “Don’t hate me for it.”

“Hate you?” He questioned harshly. He looked up at her then. Anger burning red in his eyes. “I can’t even hate you, Audi.” He told her quietly.

She looked hopeful for a second.

Then Zac sighed and got up. He gave her a longing look, wishing for the past and their friendship back. “I can’t even hate you for this.” He told her quietly.

“Then- then you still l-lo-love me?” Adrianna asked as her eyes widened in shock and surprise, but also happiness.
