Chapter 18 - Straying and Punches

"ZAC! STOP IT!" C.J yelled as Zac once again tried to trip her as they walked to the store. Zac just laughed and tried to trip her again. Mrs. Bennet and Mrs. Hanson had noticed that the two of them weren't getting along very well and thought that a walk to the supermarket to get some groceries for Mrs. Hanson would be a good idea. They were wrong. "Zac... don't try that again or you will regret it!" C.J said.

"Oooo... I'm so scared! what are you gonna do? Hit me with your barbie doll?" Zac teased and then as if to prove that he wasn't scared of her, he tripped her again. C.J whirled around and thumped him hard on the arm, she then grabbed the same arm and twisted it so that Zac was forced to the ground. She shoved him hard to the ground and then set her foot hard down on his chest. "Hey! let me up!" Zac cried out, surprised at how much strength C.J had. C.J shook her head.

"I told you you would regret it. Now I'm not going to let you up until you promise that you won't try to trip me again and that you'll walk across the street from me!" C.J said. Zac shook his head and C.J pressed harder on his chest with her foot.

"OK OK! I give! you can let me up now!" Zac yelled, furious that C.J had been able to get her own way. C.J lifted her foot and stepped away from Zac. He then jumped to his feet. "What was that for?" He demanded.

"Oh my god... are you completely thick? You were annoying the hell out of me so I decided to put a stop to it my own way seeing that telling you to stop was NOT working!" C.J exclaimed.

"You didn't have to throw me to the ground!" Zac said, walking ahead of C.J. C.J rolled her eye's and wished she was with Jake at that moment and not with Zac. They walked the rest of the way to the store in silence and C.J followed Zac around while he got the things from the list that Mrs. Hanson had given him. Once he had gotten everything he walked up to the checkout and piled the stuff onto the counter. He then felt in his pocket for the twenty dollar bill his mother had given him.

"Uh-oh" He said. C.J looked up from the magazine she was flipping through.

"What do you mean uh-oh?" She asked.

"Do you have the money?" Zac asked. C.J looked at him like he was an idiot. "Why would I have the money when I watched your mom give it to you?" She asked. Zac groaned.

"It must have fallen out of my pocket when you threw me to the ground!" He said. C.J laughed. Zac didn't find their situation the least bit funny. "This is your fault you know" He said angrily. C.J stopped laughing.

"My fault? who was the one who decided to annoy me huh? Who was the one who didn't listen when I told them to stop?" C.J cried.

"Go and get it" Zac ordered.

"I don't think so! I'm not your slave! you lost it... you go get it. Besides, I don't know my way back do I? I had to follow you here!" C.J said, shoving Zac. Zac shoved C.J back, not caring that it was a girl that he was pushing. Zac groaned and walked out of the store, leaving C.J with the groceries, she assumed that he was going to look for the money. An hour later he still wasn't back and C.J began to wonder if he had deliberately left her in the store.

"God I hate him so much!" C.J said to herself. She told the checkout girl to forget about the groceries and then walked out of the store. She stood in the parking lot and tried to remember what way Zac had brought her. She sighed and then started walking in the direction she thought the Hanson house was. About 15 minutes later she was hopelessly lost. She sat down on the curb and tried not to burst into tears. She then held her tears in, determined not to cry. Five minutes later a car pulled up beside her and Isaac got out.

"There you are! God Zac's a jerk! are you ok?" He asked, helping C.J up. C.J nodded and got into the car. Isaac started to head back to his house. "Zac's paying big time for this... did you really get him to the ground?"

"Uh-huh. When you have three big brothers you have to know how to defend yourself... especially if you are the only girl in the house." C.J said. She suddenly glanced at Isaac. Oh no... I've said to much! she thought frantically. But Isaac didn't catch on to what she was saying.

"Really?... well, I don't have that problem myself" He said cheerfully as he pulled into his driveway. They got out of the car and walked into the house.

"C.J! thank god you're all right! I'm so sorry about Zac... he just doesn't think at times" Mrs. Hanson said. Make that all the time C.J thought. But out loud she said

"It's ok... you shouldn't have to apologize for what Zac did."

"Oh I know... but as his mother I feel somewhat responsible for his actions. If you want to go talk to him he's up in his room sulking" Mrs. Hanson replied and then left to help Mrs. Bennet with dinner. C.J decided against going up to see Zac and settled for watching T.V with Kayla, Taylor, Jaymi and Isaac.

-----------------------------------------------------

A few day's later Isaac was sitting in his room, staring at the scrap piece of paper in his hand. The paper had Gemmah's phone number on it and the words "Call me sometime" scribbled above. It was driving him crazy. Every time he would go to call Gemmah, Taylor would bluntly remind him about Jaymi. Then Isaac would protest that he was calling Gemmah just to see how she was... and of course Taylor wouldn't believe him. Now that Taylor was out, he was free to call Gemmah without any interuptions. He walked out into the hall and slowly dialed Gemmah's number.

"Hello?" a male voice asked after three rings. Isaac's voice caught in his throat but he soon found it.

"Uh.. yeah... um may I talk to Gemmah please?" Isaac felt like an idiot.

"Sure... who's speaking?"

"Isaac" Isaac said, positive that Gemmah would not remember him. A few minutes later Gemmah was on the phone.

"Isaac?" she asked.

"Yeah... Gemmah?"

"That would be me... how are you?"

"I'm fine... how you been?" Isaac asked.

"Ahh... so so... could be better but then I wouldn't have anything to complain about." Gemmah said, laughing. Isaac started to relax.

"Right... um, anyway... are you busy?"

"Not right now... why? do you want to get together?" Gemmah asked. Isaac smiled. He was hoping that Gemmah would invite him to go somewhere so he wouldn't have to do it.

"Sure... I'll come by and pick you up in half an hour" Isaac said. Gemmah gave Isaac her address and the two hung up. Isaac instantly felt a pang of guilt. What he was doing was wrong, and if Jaymi found out....he didn't want to think of what she would do to him if she found out. Isaac was close to calling Gemmah back and confessing that he already had a girlfriend, but soon decided against it. There was no way the Jaymi could find out. He wasn't going to tell anyone that he was going out somewhere with another girl, Taylor wasn't home, and it wasn't as if he and Gemmah were an item or anything, Jaymi was still his girlfriend and nothing could ever change that. Isaac ran a brush through his hair then walked out to his car. He opened the door and started the engine. He soon found Gemmah's house and got out of his car. Slowly, he made his way up to the front door. It opened before he had a chance to knock.

"Hi!" Gemmah said, giving him a small hug.

"Uhh...hi.." Isaac said, taken back by the unexpected hug. They got into his car and Isaac drove to a small cafe on the outskirts of town, where he was sure no one he knew was there. He glanced around inside before entering and found the place nearly empty. He lead the way towards a table in the back of the cafe.

"So..what would you like?" Isaac asked her. Gemmah studied the menu for a few minutes then looked up at him.

"I'll just have a coffee, maybe a piece of that yummy looking chocolate cake over there!" She said, pointing to a cake sitting on the counter. Isaac looked over at it, wondering how long it had been there. It didn't look very fresh. A waitress came over and took their orders and then, unsmiling hurried to behind the counter to prepare the coffee's. "So..." Isaac said, not sure on what to say.

"What took you so long to call me anyway?" Gemmah suddenly asked. Isaac looked up at her, startled by her question.

"I...uh...was...I've been pretty busy lately..sorry" He stuttered. He couldn't very well tell her that he had spent the last few days with his girlfriend. Gemmah seemed to accept his answer. The coffee arrived and the two of them drank in silence. "So, do you live in Tulsa?" He asked her. She shook her head no.

"I'm staying with my Aunt for the summer, then I'm going back to Arizona"

"Oh" Was all Isaac said. He was slightly dissapointed that Gemmah didn't live in Tulsa. The two finished their coffees and Isaac took Gemmah home, feeling slightly guilty that he had spent the afternoon with Gemmah and not Jaymi.
