Zen began in China in the sixth century
as a way of Indian Buddhism meeting with
Taoism, it was the merging of speculative
with practical and the metaphysical with the
earthy.
In China it was called Ch"an and it
stressed Meditation over teaching as a short and
steep way of realizing the mind of Buddha that
is inherent in all of us.
In the seventh through the twelfth centuries, Zen
reached its Golden Age in the T'ang and Sung dynasties
and arrived in Japan about 1190. The first Zen teacher
came to the United States around 1905.
