Vetala
An evil spirit in Indian folklore who haunts cemeteries and reanimates
corpses. The vetala is demonic in appearance, with a human body the
hands and feet of which are turned backward. Vetalas are said to live in stones
scattered about the hills; in Deca, they are guardians of villages
and live in red-painted stones. When not reanimating corpses, vetalas
love to play tricks on the living.
