More Romeo + Juliet Homework
When we studied R&J, we had to write a new ending to the play in Iambic
pentameter rhyming couplets. My group made ours so that Paris falls in love
w/ Rosaline and decides to marry her instead and Romeo and Juliet escape
together to Mantua. It's kinda weird since we had to write it in the iambic
pentameter, but I thought we did an ok job...
Here's a copy of the new ending we wrote. I think it's kinda hard to
understand so I'll explain basically what happens. Romeo is telling Benvolio
that he needs to leave Mantua now that he has killed Tybalt. Benvolio wants
to know if there's anything he needs and Romeo mentions that he would like to
have his lady (meaning Juliet) with him, but knows Benvolio can't help w/
that. Benvolio thinks Romeo is talking about Rosaline and decides to get her
to follow him to surprise him. He goes to see Rosaline, who has suddenly
realized that she really does love Romeo after all. Benvolio sends her to
the woods to see Romeo, but the Nurse overhears their conversation and warns
Juliet that Rosaline is after her husband. Juliet is furious and goes to the
forest to find Romeo, where she sees him w/ Rosaline. They are arguing over
Romeo when Paris walks in looking for Juliet. He sees Rosaline, falls in
love w/ her, and takes her back to Verona to get married. Romeo and Juliet
escape to Mantua and live happily ever after!

A New Ending to Romeo & Juliet
(This takes place right after Romeo has killed Tybalt.)
Scene 1- A Street in Verona
(Romeo and Benvolio enter)
ROMEO: Alas, yond Tybalt's blood hath spilled by me.
Now, to escape my death, I'll have to flee.
BENVOLIO: You're right my cuz- you are doomed if you stay.
What can I do to help thee on thy way?
ROMEO: Oh, thoughtful Ben, I need not anything.
But wait- no, you could not my lady bring.
Fair cuz, I'd fain you bring food for my flight.
I'll wait for you inside the woods tonight. (exits)
BENVOLIO: What's this? My cuz does want his lady, too?
If Rosaline will consent, then I'll come through.
Why, I won't be the one to bring his food,
His lady Rosaline can go be wooed. (exits)
Scene 2- Verona- Outside Rosaline's House
(Rosaline enters)
ROSALINE: Alas, it is too late to tell my love
He's brighter than the shining stars above.
When I'm with him, my heart begins to soar,
But now he's gone away for ever more.
His swordsmanship won favor all around,
But now he's gone away, Mantua bound!
I'll think of him by minute, day, and year...
(Benvolio enters, nurse happens to walk by at the same time he begins
speaking)
BENVOLIO: I have good news that you'll be glad to hear!
Before thy dear love Romeo did flee,
He did request that I would bring him thee.
ROSALINE: Oh pains now not of sorrow but of joy!
Henceforth, now's not the time I shall be coy!
NURSE: (to audience) Ay me! That awful Rosaline! How rude!
My lady's husband she hath now pursued!
Go now must I and tell my lady this:
That never will she find eternal bliss! (exits)
Scene 3- Verona- Capulet's House
(Juliet is onstage, Nurse enters and begins speaking)
NURSE: Poor Juliet, thy Romeo hast flown,
A girl with him for he is not alone!
This Rosaline loves Romeo and so,
Away to find thy Romeo thee must go!
JULIET: I've lost my love- and now she's gone with him?!
That foul girl- I'll tear her limb from limb!
I bid thee, Nurse, farewell, for I must go
To find and rescue my dear Romeo. (begins to leave)
NURSE: He's fled into the forest like a hare-
He crouches nervously within his lair!
Scene 4- Woods
(bunny hops by, Rosaline and Romeo are onstage)
ROMEO: Poor girl! I swear I didn't call for thee!
It's Juliet I want to be with me!
ROSALINE: Alas! Ay me! You said you loved me true.
I've now realized I want to be with you. (Juliet enters)
JULIET: Back, fiendish girl! I've seen thine evil plan!
I saw thee as the tried to steal my man.
ROSALINE: What's this? Oh I did nothing of the sort!
My Juliet, you are a jealous sport.
Fair Romeo did love me much before
he first saw you-
JULIET: But he loves you no more!
For I love him and he loves only me!
We'll be together for eternity.
ROMEO: Dost thou now see why I must tell thee nay?
Juliet and I were married yesterday!.
JULIET: So there! And now will you listen to me?
This group should be a twosome, not of three.
ROSALINE: Oh woe is me! My heart's first love-
JULIET:
is
mine! (Paris enters)
PARIS: Oh, Juliet! I'm glad you're safe and fine!
What's this you say of Romeo and thee?
You're to be married on Thursday to me!
ROSALINE: Romeo, I'll kill myself if I'm not yours!
PARIS: Wait, don't- you are as pretty as the stars!
The silvery moon that peers down from the skies
Compares not with your beauty in my eyes.
I've never seen such beauty all my life-
Since Juliet left me I now need a wife...
ROSALINE: What? Me? A wife? Oh yes, oh yes I say!
PARIS: Now I'll still have my wedding on Thursday!
Now, back to Verona and our new life.
Sweet Rose, I yearn for you to be my wife.
(Rosaline and Paris begin to leave)
ROSALINE: Oh Paris dear, I am so glad we met-
Don't you think me prettier than Juliet? (They exit)
JULIET: What's that?!
ROMEO: Oh, never mind just let them be.
They'll ne'er be happier than you and me.
In Mantua, we'll live our new life
Not as mortal foes, but as husband and wife.
JULIET: We'll live together in eternal bliss
Oh what a happy ending now is this.
A re-write Friar Lawrence's speech at the end of
the play (this speech was not in the movie) where he was telling the
story of why they died.
The second section is where we had to write an
essay on the line that Romeo said "Worse posion to mens souls in these
poor compounds that thou mayest not sell. I hath sold thou poision,
thou hast sold me none." (I'm not sure the exact line, but its pretty
close). I was really happy, cause i got the highest score in the class
on these.

Romeo and Juliet were husband and wife. I married them , but on the day
that they were married,
Tybalt was killed which banished Romeo from Verona.
When Juliet cried, it was Romeo she was crying for, not Tybalt. To
help cheer her up,
you were going to have her marry Paris. She then came to me and begged
me to help her get rid
of Paris or she would commit suicide there and then. I gave her a
sleeping potion which made her
look dead as I had intended.
Meanwhile, I wrote to Romeo, telling him to come here tonight to help
take her from the
grave. At the time we would arrive, the potion would wear off and she
would awaken. But Friar
John, who was supposed to be taking the letter to Romeo was delayed and
didn’t make it. Last
night he brought my letter back.
Then when I was here alone, at the hour she was supposed to wake I
came to take her
from the vault and keep her in my cell until I could call Romeo. But
when I got here at the time
she was supposed to awaken, I found Paris and Romeo lying there dead.
When she awoke I tried to convince her to come with me and deal with
their deaths
calmly. All of a sudden, a noise scared me from the tomb. She was so
desperate that she would
not go with me. But as it seems , she killed herself. I know all of
this , and so does Juliet’s nurse.
If you think that it is necessary, you can execute me in accordance to
the law.
Section two:
Romeo has given the apothecary his money for the poison so he can die
with Juliet. He says that
money is worse than poison because it causes so many problems and that
instead of the apothecary
giving Romeo the poison , Romeo has given the poison to the apothecary.
I agree with Romeo that money can be worse than poison if used in a bad
way. A lot of
murders, robberies, deceptions, and kidnappings happen because of money.
If there were no
money, there would probably not be as much greed. With no money there
probably not be as
much greed. Also if there were no money people might not be judged by
how they look or how
much money they have.
One reason I agree with Romeo is money causes so much crime. If there
were no money
there would not be nearly as much murder, kidnapping or robbery. There
wouldn’t be ransom
notes because there wouldn’t be any money to ask for. there wouldn’t be
as much murder either
because a lot of murder takes place due to wanted inheritance or just a
quick way of getting money
fast without having to deal with banks. People who murder, kidnap, or
participate in any type of
crime are just greedy people with low self esteem.
I think that money is part of the reason that people are popular or
not. People who have a
lot of money are sometimes popular and some people who are greedy like
them for only that
reason. Also if people don’t have enough money for nice clothes they
are sometimes not liked as
much because they are judged by their looks and not their personality,
which is not fair at all.
Money has caused bigger and bigger problems throughout time. Even many
years ago
money was a problem because of greedy people wanting more money and
power. Money and
greed kept the Montague and Capulet apart which caused problems for
Romeo and Juliet leading
to their death. If money was used properly this would not have
happened.
