As
more cats and kittens are developing cancer and kidney disease each
year, the same caveats apply to their eating habits as ours: eat plenty
of fresh, organic, non-processed foods. This implies that a diet of
grocery store kibble is inappropriate for the long-term health of your
cat.
Do
remember that cats are natural carnivores, so while you may be opposed
to eating meat, your cat's digestive tract is designed for a diet
of 75% fresh meat. Blindness or heart failure can result from
a diet that is insufficient in protein and taurine. The following recipes
are quick and easy; and can be made from the foods you already have
at home.
Recipe
#1 - Kitty's Dinner:
Combine
in blender or Cuisinart until the consistency of canned cat food:(I
add an equal amount of premium, high quality, vitamin-fortified dry
cat food, such as Pinnacle, Wysong, KatzenFlocken, PetGuard, or anything
without 'by-products' listed in its top 7 ingredients.) Do
NOT use grocery store food as this is commonly produced from rendering
plant waste of diseased, decayed or abscessed animal parts. Declared
unfit for human consumption by the FDA, it is commonly labelled as
"by-products".)
75%
of this recipe's ingredients must consist of:
- any
type fish or low-fat meat, such as turkey, chicken, beef, liver;
giblets are especially tasty, to include boiling chicken or turkey
neck bones until soft and easily pulverized -- an excellent source
of calcium and protein.
25%
of the remaining ingredients may consist of:
- baked
potatoes (leave skin on) and/or brown rice
- fresh
garlic cloves (4 per pound of mix as a natural blood-purifier and
flea repellent)
- brewer's
yeast (one tsp per pound of mix; unprocessed, undebittered the best;
also a natural flea repellent)
- organic
apple cider vinegar (1/4 cup per pound of mix to boost the immune
system)
- raw
carrots, celery and cucumbers (cleanses liver, kidney & intestines;
improves breath and stool odor)
- raw
or steamed: broccoli, cauliflower, carrots, cabbage, zucchini, green
beans, yellow squash, corn (try anything except tomatoes which cats
don't usually like
- olive,
cod liver, flax seed or sesame seed oil (one tbsp per pound of mix
for glossy coat and healthy skin)
- lecithin
supplement (one tsp per pound of mix; look for power or liquid in
pet shops or health food stores)
- bone
meal (one tsp per pound of mix to increase kitty's calcium absorption
from the meat or fish)
Recipe
#2 - Kitty's Breakfast:
Combine
in blender/Cuisinart until a smooth, even texture and serve
with equal quantities of premium, high quality dry cat food such as
Pinnacle, KatzenFlocken, Wysong, PetGuard, or anything without 'by-products'
listed in its top 7 ingredients. :
(Remember
to never buy anything with by-products listed
as an ingredient. If that's all your favorite store carries, either
shop somewhere else or contact the store manager and manufacturer and
tell them you will not buy anything containing by-products.)
- Yogurt
- Brewer's
yeast
- Carrots
- Lecithin
- Any
of yours and kitty's favorite fruits, to include: cantalope and honeydew
melons, bananas, apples, raspberries, grapes, kiwis
(but do not use citrus fruits, i.e. oranges, limes or lemons, as cats
hate the smell)
Have
fun, be inventive and watch your kitty improve in energy, appearance,
and overall health; while at the same time enjoying the calming benefits
of abundant calcium, potassium and tryptophan.
